Overall, I would prefer to stay on XP, then Win 7 Ultimate, but if for varied reasons you must bump up to Win 8, then 8.1 and Pro is best option. I do ALOT of remote desktop from my main rig, with Win 7 you must have Pro or Ultimate to host remote desktop, with win 8 you must have PRO. I install "Start IS Back" immediately upon install and then I use various web guides to close down the god awful metro ui as best as possible. I do hate metro, because if I wanted my 4.8 GHZ OC'd 64GB RAM machine to function as a smart phone I would just buy a darn smartphone with linux based OS on it lol I do have an identical rig still running Win 7 Ultimate, I can say from benchmarks on both, Win 8.1 is more efficient then Win 7 by a hair. I don't know if that warrants a victory though, because had I the choice I would never have left XP pro lol

Windows 8.1 Pro is fine, really not much of a learning curve coming from 7, and will be supported longer than 7, I use it in medicine so won't go to 10 due to HIPAA concerns with 10.

I needed a version of windows for my boot camped mac. This installed very easily and is providing the ability to play windows games as well as do c# development on my laptop.
