Synopsis

You are Talion, Ranger of the Black Gate. For what seems like eons, you have guarded the entrance to Mordor, keeping watch over Sauron's undisturbed dwelling place with relative uneventfulness. But in the blink of an eye, everything you hold dear is snatched from your grasp. Your family, your friends — even your very life is taken from you in one fell swoop that leaves your soul desolate and filled with an eternal rage. Resurrected by an unforgiving spirit, you have one purpose to your life, one thing that keeps your heart pumping and your mind from giving in to the relentless grief — vengeance. Prepare yourself to embark on a dogged vendetta that calls upon you to fight your way through Mordor and uncover the truth of the spirit who compels you. This epic tale of revenge and redemption transforms you into the most feared force in the land — the Shadow of Mordor.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor delivers a dynamic game environment where the player orchestrates their personal plan of vengeance as they bend Mordor to their will. The game begins on the night of Sauron's return to Mordor, as his Black Captains brutally execute the Rangers of the Black Gate. Players become Talion, a ranger who loses his family and everything he holds dear, only to be returned from death by a mysterious Spirit of vengeance. Based on the player's actions with the in-game Nemesis System, every enemy encountered is distinct and can evolve to become a personal archenemy through the course of the game. As Talion's personal vendetta unfolds, players uncover the mystery of the Spirit that compels him, discover the origin of the Rings of Power and confront the ultimate nemesis.

So after reading about this game a lot and seeing the videos and all the game play reviews etc, i was really excited to get my hands on this for Thanksgiving. So I start to play and during the very initial cut scenes, I notice a lag/delay between video and audio. Then when the tutorial starts, I switch screens which one needs to do often when equipping items, or just viewing the orc hierarchy or just getting intelligence etc, the screen would black out as if it is processing and after a few annoying tens of seconds, finally the screen would render. I thought this was probably a one off event. But as I kept playing, it continued to happen. SO I reboot the PS3 and start over. Same problem. Several restarts later, I finally google it up and realize that many PS3 owners are facing similar issues. So I finally raise a ticket with WB Games Support and all they had me do was to clean out my game data to get some more disk space. They closed the ticket, but i reopened it as the problem continues to exist. At the end of the day I think the root cause is some poor game design implementation. I do not know first hand if other console versions suffer from the same problem, but this is definitely a deal breaker. I am surprised that none of the Best Buy purchasers mentioned this in their reviews. Overall gameplay is nice. I really wanted to play this game so I am eating the hardship for now. I do not know if there will be any patch or update to resolve this but if you can bare this the game is good. The graphics is OK. The story line is not great and the action can get repetitive. Buying a PS4 was out of budget so i settled for getting this version.

I'd get it on PS4 or Xbone if I were you.

This game is fantastic. Just great gameplay, especially the combat, super addictive. The Uruk Hierarchy system is really neat as well, getting to know each orc that you hunt adds a lot of satisfaction to the slaying of them, especially when that orc has been labeled your "Nemesis" as a result of multiple stand-offs. The story is somewhat interesting, but you'll find your self ignoring it much of the time. The game is really short if you just play through the story, and the ending is so abrupt that it's painful, and there really isn't a final boss at all, just the hammering of a single button for ten seconds, then a cutscene, then the game is over. Ka-pow. The game is great though despite those things, and I highly recommend it, BUT I do NOT recommend you play this game on PS3 or Xbox 360. If you do, just know in advance that the game will be glitchy, glitchy, glitchy. Not all the time, mind you, but certainly glitchy enough to get in the way of your having fun. It might take 20 seconds to load the pause screen at times, the cutscenes before 'Uruk Duels' look like your old VeggieTales VHSs on fast-forward and sometimes the game will just run painfully slow and the sound will cut in and out, as if you were trying to play Titanfall on Windows 98. They just didn't put much work into the 'Last-Gen' ports at all, it seems. Maybe it'll get patched, I don't know (Really, I have no idea if patches could fix it or not. Not a techy at all.), but if I were you I wouldn't bother getting it on PS3 or Xbox 360, if you're planning to upgrade soon.

The game is actually really fun, but I'm not sure it's finished. Half of the cut scenes show a few seconds then go black then a few more seconds then go black. Sometimes you get caught out of the boundaries and can't get back in. Some of the actual good cutscenes are too quiet to hear because of stupid drumming music. The worst, most annoying thing is when you interogate someone, half of the time it plays that music and constant grunting over and over again until you quit the game and start back over. Despite all of those things the game mechanics and ideas are good. The best part is that whenever someone kills you, they get promoted and grow stronger.

I bought this game at first for someone as a Christmas gift but then decided to get a second copy for myself as the game play seemed interesting. So far I have not been let down but I'm only about 15 hours into the game and seem to be running around doing the side adventures more than the main story line. The only complaints I have are the relative load times from the different screens are a bit long but the graphics are great. The text in the story is a bit small to read and I have not figured out if there is a way to make it larger. I expect if you like Assassin Creed type of games you will also enjoy this as well.

Unfortunately this game is almost unplayable at times. I am in contact with WB games about it. The sound cuts out & the frame rate will drop out during battle sequences giving you a lagged out feel. My son watched me play it and said that if he had bought that game he would have thrown it across his apartment. Very frustating. I was expecting way more. This game is incredible on the new systems but to me it seems like they never should have put it out on the ps3.

I'm not a hardcore gamer by any definition, but this game was not only accessible in terms of controls and storyline, but it actually delivered on the promise of a game that would mesh well with other elements of Tolkien's legendarium. While some liberties were taken, the spirit of Middle-Earth shines through. Granted, some portions of the plot were slightly cliched, overwrought, or just downright silly; but even given all of those shortcomings, I still haven't played a game that comes close to the standard set here in many years, both in terms of mechanics and enjoyment.

I played for a couple hours and found myself bother by the graphics in this ps3 version after waiting long weeks for this to be release on the ps3 after ps4 version was release. I was disappointed at that time due to me not owning a ps4. So i feel this was badly worked on the ps3 version as it seems they did not take advantage of how much ps3 can offer in graphics. It feels like a ps2 version instead. it felt rushed on the delivery date and feels that developers didn't take ps3 version seriously. Overall it is a great game.

Overall it seems like it would be a fun game. However this was poorly done for the PS3. I won't delve into the graphics but rather the game play. There has not been a time yet I have played where there has not been some glitching or rough and jerky cut scenes or battles. I have been stuck on a wall and could not get free. I have had multiple Uruk's floating at the same time. I would avoid this game based on its lack of smooth playability on the PS3.
