"Midnight Special" is Writer/Director Jeff Nichols and Michael Shannon's fourth collaboration and they have hit a bullseye. Everything in this film is top notch including the dialogue, the acting, the cinematography, the special effects and the editing. After "Mud" and now "Midnight Special" Nichols has proven he's a filmmaker that has a completely unique voice and a level of talent that is nearly unparalleled in modern cinema. Nichols has given his frequent collaborator Shannon the meatiest role as a man that will stop at nothing to protect a child with mysterious abilities. Luckily, Nichols has given all of the incredible supporting actors great material and they all knock it out of the park. Adam Driver("Star Wars: The Force Awakens", "Girls") in particular stands out playing against the usually evil FBI agent in this type of movie. "Midnight Special" is not the type of movie that can be casually watched but a film that you must pay attention to fully understand. In fact, "Midnight Special" really requires multiple viewings to catch many of the subtle nuances Nichols has written into his tightly paced 112 minute screenplay. While most modern science fiction films are being budgeted well over 100-million dollars Nichols has taken a reported 18-million dollar budget and made it look like like a film that cost 5-times that amount. I cannot recommend this film enough, in fact I have told anyone that would listen that they should absolutely give this film a try. I understand that this film may not be everybody's "cup of tea" but if you want to continue to see intelligent, well made science fiction instead of sequels to "Independence Day" these are the films that need our support. Also, how can you go wrong with any film starring Michael Shannon(the most criminally underrated actor not named Sam Rockwell)?

Perhaps there was too much hype going into this movie. I enjoy a wide variety of sci-fi movies, and I anticipated a slower paced movie. Even with that in mind, this movie seemed to loose the momentum it established in the beginning. I would only recommend this to fans of sci-fi, with the disclaimer that it may not be their "type" of sci-fi.
