    Synopsis

    Miracle on 34th Street
Edmund Gwenn plays Kris Kringle, a bearded old gent who is the living image of Santa Claus. Serving as a last-minute replacement for the drunken Santa who was to have led Macy's Thanksgiving Parade, Kringle is offered a job as a Macy's toy-department Santa. Supervisor Maureen O'Hara soon begins having second thoughts about hiring Kris: it's bad enough that he is laboring under the delusion that he's the genuine Saint Nick; but when he begins advising customers to shop elsewhere for toys that they can't find at Macy's, he's gone too far! Amazingly, Mr. Macy (Harry Antrim) considers Kris' shopping tips to be an excellent customer-service "gimmick," and insists that the old fellow keep his job. A resident of a Long Island retirement home, Kris agrees to take a room with lawyer John Payne during the Christmas season. It happens that Payne is sweet on O'HARA, and Kris subliminally hopes he can bring the two together. Kris is also desirous of winning over the divorced O'HARA's little daughter Natalie Wood, who in her few years on earth has lost a lot of the Christmas spirit. Complications ensue when Porter Hall, Macy's nasty in-house psychologist, arranges to have Kris locked up in Bellevue as a lunatic. Payne represents Kris at his sanity hearing, rocking the New York judicial system to its foundations by endeavoring to prove in court that Kris is, indeed, the real Santa Claus! We won't tell you how he does it: suffice to say that there's a joyous ending for Payne and O'HARA, as well as a wonderful faith-affirming denouement for little Natalie Wood. 72-year-old Edmund Gwenn won an Oscar for his portrayal of the "jolly old elf" Kringle; the rest of the cast is populated by such never-fail pros as Gene Lockhart (as the beleaguered sanity-hearing judge), William Frawley (as a crafty political boss), and an unbilled Thelma Ritter and Jack Albertson. Based on the novel by Valentine Davies, Miracle on 34th Street was remade twice: once for TV in 1973, and a second time for a 1994 theatrical release, with Richard Attenborough as Kris Kringle. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

It had been a long time since I saw this movie and I wanted my 9 yr old to see it. It was every bit as good as I remembered and my daughter enjoyed it as well. The only knock I have is that there's a colorized version of this movie out there and even though my daughter is good about seeing this movie (and It's a Wonderful Life) in their original B&W form, it would have been nice if they included the color version as well. I have It's a Wonderful Life on blu-ray and have watched it 5 times with my daughter, one of those times in color - it's a nice option to have.

On the radio I listened to a show with 5 different movie critics. 4 of them said it was their favorite Christmas movie of all time... I figured how could I go wrong. I'm 62 and have never seen this movie..... I've really missed out... This movie will definitely not disappoint. 2 discs one is the original in black and white. The other is color. I watched the original black and white... must see.

I bought this movie sight unseen out of curiosity. Given that it takes place about seventy years ago, it's like a whole different world. I will admit that Edmund Gwenn is a very convincing, very charming Santa Claus, but in the end, 'It's A Wonderful Life' is still my favorite Xmas movie. I do think it's a heck of a coincidence that William Frawley appears in both movies, though. If you don't know who that is, he played Fred Mertz on 'I Love Lucy.'

The movie is a classic and is great to watch around Christmas. It is well acted and directed, with the plot moving along nicely. Adults and kids both have something to enjoy with the tale of believing in Santa, even though it seems irrational. The only negative is that the colored version of the movie is not included, only black and white. This drawback is amplified by the fact that the DVD has both, but the Blu-ray, which has more space on the disc, does not.

This is my only favorite version of this movie, as no one plays the role of Santa Clause better than Edmund Gwen, also starring Maureen O'Hara, John Payne, and Natalie Wood. This movie is about a Macy's Department Store Santa, who proclaims to be the REAL Santa Claus. He spreads Christmas cheer throughout NYC by telling the children's parents to go to other stores in order to make their Christmas wishes come true & putting the kids' wishes ahead of Macy's sales.

If you have never watched "Miracle on 34th Street", you really must add it to your holiday viewing list. It's a classic that transcends decades of movie-making. The milder pace of a story-driven plot contrasts sharply to more contemporary films, but that's part of the appeal of taking a nostalgic trip back to the golden age of Hollywood. It's a sweet, sentimental story that won't disappoint.

One of my favorite movies for the holidays, excellent acting and what a great story. The only thing wrong with this version is that it is not colorized, but for the realist this is perfect in stunning black and white, which I did not mind because I enjoy the original version but would have loved to see it colorized. Enjoy this great Christmas movie, you won't be disappointed.

There's nothing I can say that hasn't already been said about this movie; it's a true Christmas classic. I was pleasantly surprised by the extra features included on the disc - Maureen O'Hara's commentary and the other accounts really help create a complete picture of the joys, challenges, and unique aspects surrounding this movie that you might not have otherwise known. Overall, I was very happy with this purchase.
