Sustainability at Best Buy

Together, we can create a more sustainable planet.

Best Buy is helping to make a positive impact on the planet by offering eco-friendly products that conserve resources, Geek Squad Total Tech Support and repair services that extend the useful life of products, and recycling and trade-in programs that help keep products out of landfills.

As part of our commitment to the environment, we’ve established the following long-term goals for our company and our customers:

  • Reduce carbon emissions in our operations by 75% by 2030 (over 2009 baseline), becoming carbon neutral by 2050
  • Reduce carbon emissions from ENERGY STAR products sold to our customers 20% by 2030 (over 2017 baseline), saving $5 billion in energy costs

Sustainability is part of our ecosystem.

Imagine a circular economy where virtually nothing goes to waste. Now you’re sharing our vision.

Product lifecycle: Get it now. Use and enjoy. Repair. Trade in. Recycle.

What you buy matters.

By offering a broad selection of ENERGY STAR certified electronics and appliances, as well as sustainable eco-friendly products, we can help you to conserve energy and natural resources while saving you money. Another way to help the sustainability effort is to shop for deals in the Best Buy Outlet. Here, you can save on pre-owned products, restored and verified to work, or choose refurbished items, repaired and restored to a like-new state. Plus, you’ll find great deals on open-box and clearance-priced tech.

Geek Squad can extend the useful life of your tech.

Adding a Geek Squad Protection Plan can extend the life of your technology when it needs repair. Or, if you simply need support like a minor tune-up or synching with other devices, Geek Squad Total Tech Support can help with all your tech, no matter where you bought it.

When it’s time to part ways, we can help you do it responsibly.

The bottom line is, by partnering we can keep more e-waste out of landfills. If your used tech still has value, you can trade it in for a Best Buy Gift Card, giving your tech a second life. If it doesn’t have trade-in value, we’ll recycle virtually any used electronics or appliances responsibly, regardless of where you bought it. Then, materials from the recycling process are made into new products, like circuit boards, construction materials, and even new electronics, like printers.

Reduce your carbon footprint with sustainable tech.

Recycling center

Here’s how we can partner together to keep more products out of landfills.

Trade it in.

Millions of used electronics were traded in last year across the globe, diverting them from landfills and giving that technology a second life. You can help these sustainability efforts by trading in your used tech for a Best Buy Gift Card. Use the trade-in value estimator on our Best Buy Trade-In page to find out what your products are worth.

Recycle it.

If your used tech has no trade-in value, we’ll help you recycle it responsibly, regardless of where you bought it. As the nation’s largest retail collector, to date we’ve collected a combined total of more than 2 billion pounds of electronics and appliances for recycling. It’s all part of our continued commitment to working with our customers to keep old tech and appliances out of landfills.

Here’s how you can help minimize e-waste.

Don’t let old tech go to waste.
