Synopsis

Mission: Impossible
After he is framed for the death of several colleagues and falsely branded a traitor, a secret agent embarks on a daring scheme to clear his name in this spy adventure. Though it drew its name from the familiar television series, director Brian DePalma's big-budget adaptation shares little more with the original show than the occasional self-destructing message and the name of team leader Jim Phelps (Jon Voight). The film focuses not on Phelps but his protégé, Ethan Hunt (a reserved Tom Cruise), who becomes a fugitive after taking the blame for a botched operation. He responds by banding together with a group of fellow renegades, and he is soon maneuvering his way through a twisted series of double crosses that mainly serve as excuses for spectacular high-tech action sequences. Much of the activity revolves around a missing computer disk, with the film's most famous scene depicting Hunt's delicate efforts to retrieve the disk from a secure, well-alarmed room in CIA headquarters. ~ Judd Blaise, Rovi

The image looks gorgeous. There's no mistaking its crisp, seamless cinematic bonafides. Grain can be a little heavy in select shots, but it's often very even, albeit well pronounced. It's flattering and gorgeously rendered. The 12-bit Dolby Vision colors are a great improvement over the Blu-ray as well. Whites are more intense and clean, flesh tones are far more balanced, and the entire palette enjoys a significant increase in color depth, vibrance, and yield. It's much more evenly presented. No new extras are included, but the carryover Blu-ray offers plenty.

I bought this special collector's edition of Mission: Impossible thinking that the one that came in the trilogy three-pack had less features...I was wrong. This collector's edition had the exact same features only with a different cover. Lame. Now, the only upside to buying this movie after saying that was that this also came with a ticket to see Jack Ryan in theaters. So, spending 10 bucks on this movie and also getting a a free movie ticket was definitely worth it but I should have just went with another featured Blu Ray movie that offered the same. Anyway, if you enjoy these movies, I suggest just buying the trilogy three-pack or wait for the inevitable four-pack.

This is the upgrade we've been looking forward to! Audio is now Dolby TrueHD (not remastered for Dolby Atmos) instead of lossy Dolby Digital. The 4K video makes the image pop better and grain is retained. The extras on the included Blu-ray is the same as the previous release. Highly recommended!

    Great Spy Thriller!

Easily the best of the trilogy, you will feel somewhat cheated when watching the sequels. However the third movie captures some of the magic of the first. This is one of the best spy genre thrillers. The story is great, and the movie is well paced. Great action, that doesn't feel thrown in, but is carried by the story. The computer room break in is intense, and the heliicopter scene at the end was a special effects extravaganza back in it's opening release.

The action in this movie is top notch. It is directed by Brad Bird (The Incredibles, The Iron Giant) and the childlike wonder he shows in his other movies is present here. The camera work is excellent. There is humor (especially from Simon Pegg). Tom Cruise does what he always does in the Mission Impossible movies. Jeremy Rainer plays his character well. The tall building in the desert scene is killer.

Directed by legendary auteur Brian De Palma (Untouchables), this initial entry in the long running series is rich in thrills and style. De Palma sacrifices flash bang for a smart noir slow boil that runs more like a classic murder mystery than a race from one car chase to another. More enjoyable than a perfectly baked chocolate chip cookie.

Mission Impossible is a great action movie of its time in the mid-1990's. The acting and action is well done for its time. The story can get a little convoluted and out of place, but in the end it satisfies and makes the movie feel complete. This is one of those movies where it continually launched Tom Cruise's career.

    Solid Spy Movie

This movie is actually a fairly decent spy movie compared to its later sequels. With from dark allies to CIA headquarters, quiet paranoia to helicopter explosions, this movie has something for everyone while maintaining originality. Its not an amazing movie, but its pretty solid and deserves a spot in all but the most discerning collections.
