Don't Call it Sea Change II

It's fun to compare Morning Phase to Sea Change. They clearly share an artistic aesthetic, but i wouldn't necessarily call Morning Phase a sequel. It's more a revisit to familiar grounds, with a different dynamic and much more mature and seasoned results. Morning Phase has a definite 70's feel to it, with a casual california pop feel in the questing lyrics and the instrumentation. Waves even goes back to that 70's fall back-full string backing. Beck has clearly matured since the jokey one off albums and facile mellow tunes. Highly recommended.

I'm a huge Beck fan, so I picked this up right away. I had heard that Morning Phase would be a lot like Sea Change. I disagree. Sea Change to me felt WAY more emotionally charged than Morning Phase does. Morning Phase is a more mellow release (compared to Mellow Gold, Odelay, Midnight Vultures), but that doesn't mean it's the same as Sea Change. What I noticed when I played the album was there really wasn't any one song that stood out from the pack. It's good music, but all the tracks sort of blend together.

I was at one time a big Beck fan. I had most of his records and saw him a few times. But when I read that this album was similar to Sea Change, I avoided it. I had lost a lot of interest in Beck, and Sea Change was part of the reason I had. However, after he won the Grammy and Kanye rushed the stage, I decided I wanted to hear this record after all. And I'm really glad I did; it is a really good listen that I would recommend. Thanks, Kanye, for helping me realize this.

If you are not pulled in after listening to the first three tracks, maybe you are stuck in a particular range of what you want or expect to hear from Beck. But, oh the joy of being free and listening from the heart. I appreciate his expanded range of personal expression, and enjoy the sounds of the melodies, harmonies, and feelings evoked.I was glad to see him win album of the year for this effort and find it worth re-visiting for an enjoyable journey.

If your expecting a traditional Beck sound well this isn't for you. I saw that it got Album of the year and was intrigued. I hadn't heard any top hits on the radio so I was in wonder why. This is not your main stream pop or alternative sound. Its full of truth, beauty, pain and resolve. Loved the vibe and it now starts my day since I bought it. Looks like I need to add Sea Change to the collection. Love it!

Beck now occupies three of my top five all time favorite albums. " Sea Change" being #1, Mutations #2. Grand, lush, hanging, melodic and complex, but not complicated. More music for your money, if you pay attention. These songs are there for the taking, not forced to be received. Lyrics are powerful, production is tight and clean, and the notes simply make you feel good! Buy it and enjoy!!!

Becks latest release is a stunning work that I enjoy more and more each time I listen to it. I knew right off the bat that it contained some excellent music, but as I have listened to it I find every track a musical delight in it's own way. A must have. I have turned a number of people on to this outstanding effort. Thank you Beck. It is a pleasure to find music this consistently fine.

Beck has made an incredibly sincere folk rock album with pop and country influences. The whole album is really lovely. Get it and put it on in the morning. It'll be refreshing. His best since Sea Change, which is my favorite Beck album. It is far from his early rock stuff, but wonderful on its own.
