When has-been baseball player Jack Elliot (Tom Selleck) is signed by a Japanese team, he is initially reluctant to take the game seriously. Elliot is very successful, though, as he teaches the team about American chutzpah, and they remind him of the value of respect. He must fight his way out from under a slump to show that he deserves the title.
Not another Kevin Costner movie, but a humorous effort following the arrival of an American veteran player who ends up playing ball in Japan. I live near Detroit and Tom Selleck was a fixture of Tiger's Spring Training for over 6 seasons. He did see live at bats in spring training games during the hey day of the Sparky Anderson era (explains his Magnum characters fandom). The movie seems formulaic today, but when released was seen as a sport filled, humorous, romantic comedy.
