"Murder by Decree" is the second film putting Sherlock Holmes on the trail of Jack the Ripper, following the earlier "A Study in Terror." More sumptuously produced than the earlier film, "Murder" is class all the way. The acting is exceptional in all cases. While Holmes has generally been portrayed as brilliant but rather cold, Christopher Plummer makes him much more empathetic. And in a small but key role, a very young Genevieve Bujold is affecting as a girl whose tragic lot is at the core of the mystery. Sadly the dvd does not have captioning, but it does offer an excellant commentary track from the director. Possibly too slow-paced for those with a need for rapid editing cuts and action in the Robert Downey Jr. "Holmes" mode, "Murder by Decree" will be enjoyed by most others who like Holmes, mysteries, and top-notch film-making.
