It's Friendly ...Posted .
... like how the Temp fades in for about 15 seconds when passing close by, then the Nest kind of 'quiets down' and goes dark. The wi-fi access is pretty instantaneous; our HVAC system goes on/off within seconds. It's so mellow, behaves so naturally, you could even call it 'friendly' ... ... here's what you can do while waiting for delivery: * set up Nest online acc't * download Nest smartphone app * check out Nest's online tutorials and other people's YouTube videos (then, when it arrives, you won't need the manual or install instructions!) ... amazingly, when we got to the point of attaching it to the wall, the setup process seemed to have automatically detected our online acc't over wi-fi (this meant, didn't need to enter initial pairing codes ... so, suuuper simple; couldn't have been any easier -- long story short: setup your online acc't now) ... here's what you can do for physical installation --> if you opt to skip the beige faceplates (presumably, the main reason for them is to cover wall blemishes ... so, our installation was longer than "20 min" by virtue of the fact that we wanted to patch / paint the wall a bit): 1) as the old thermostat wires came off, one-by-one attach the blue/white stickers to the wires to keep track 2) with the wire hanging bare on the wall --> this is a good time to do spackle / paint touchups 3) set a fan to dry the paint faster (doesn't take long; we were busy with some other stuff, so about half hour is fine) 4) while paint dries --> also can do the wiring to Nest's round attachment plate 5) look / ask yourself --> wood -or- wall anchors? (note / tip: check if your thermostat wire threads through a 2x4 cutout already; didn't realize this and so, the minor mistake of using the supplied wall anchors can be avoided --> the Nest's round mounting plate for us just needed to be screwed into the wood just behind the sheetrock ... wonder if this is common for other homes?!) 6) oh, the round attachment has a built in level (nice touch) 7) attach the Nest to its mounting plate ... follow on-screen setup instructions! 8) Right away, after setting up, there is about a ~10min software update over wi-fi 9) test online computer acc't (wow!) 10) test online access via smartphone app (wow!) The Nest is designed simply, and works simply -- even though we all realize how sophisticated it is to get the job done; we've had it almost 2 weeks, and that's when you can really start to notice the learning patterns (the built-in motion sensors are a powerful feature ... more so than we probably think). Super great for the remote features, certainly a crowd-pleaser. Two days after installing, we took a trip to the mountains, and put it in "Away Mode" ... then, three days after that when driving home, we were able to activate the thermostat about 30-40 min before getting back, right from our iPhone (ok, not the driver, but the passenger). We did this again Xmas Day leaving the house, and returning 12 hours later to heat up again -- in a word: Cool! GO NEST . . . !!!I would recommend this to a friend

I love it!Posted .
Super easy to use. I noticed right away that when I'd use my iPhone to change the temperature on a rare cold week here, nest had already figured out I would be home soon and was warming the house. I have lost wifi connection a few times which is puzzling - but I suspect it is my mobile-home interenet provider. I love this device and have sold at least 10 to adoring friends.I would recommend this to a friend

I Feel Like a Beta TesterPosted .
I've owned my Nest for three weeks now and here is my impressions: Installation was easy. I've installed three programable thermostats prior to this one and this was just as easy as any of them. I was able to connect to my wifi connection easily as well and I have not had any of the problems that some others have reported. The "Learning Mode" did not work as well as I would have liked, probably because of the holidays and after encountering a problem and having to reset my Nest (more on that later), I chose to just manually set my schedule. I have found that I rarely use the thermostat itself and instead use a web browser or the Android app that is installed on all of the family phones to set the thermostat. I like the AutoAway feature, which turns my furnance down when I'm gone and it's really handy to turn the temperature up from my phone so that the house is warm when I return. The web interface and Android app have very few options. In fact, I am quite disappointed that I can't control more or receive more information with the web interface. For example, I can't schedule my furnace fan to turn on to cycle the air in the house at particular times. The web interface doesn't show past usage history even though it's available on the thermostat itself. It just seems like Nest could easily provide this information considering the thermostat is connected to the Internet. I can't help but feel like I'm a beta tester for an unfinished product. In order to view my energy usage for the furnace I had to use the Nest thermostat, but for some reason it was misreporting and showing I had no usage. It's winter here in Wisconsin and I know my furnance has been running. I emailed Nest Technical Support regarding the issue and had a response in less than two hours -- and this was on a Saturday. The support agent emailed me instructions for resetting the Nest to it's factory defaults, which I did and now my energy usage is showing properly. One other problem I had with the Nest was after the power went out one night. When the power returned, the furnace would not turn on. I looked at the thermostat and it was reporting that all the wiring was disconnected. Fortunately, I could use the web interface to set the temperature. I was finally able to eliminate the errors on the thermostat by disconnecting it from the wall and reconnecting it. The Nest reported that the wiring changed and everything was OK. What would have happened if I was on vacation and the power flickered? I probably would have come home to frozen pipes unless I checked my phone app. So, I'm giving this product three out of five stars. For two hundred and fifty bucks I'm now able to control my thermostat from the Internet -- and that's about it. The only thing keeping me from returning it is that my hope is that Nest will continue to add features to the web and Android interfaces. No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Wonderful productPosted .
Just received my Nest yesterday.Had a question and called technical support and they were efficient and very helpful. You will find the videos very helpful on the nest web site. I had a red wire jumpered on my old thermostat between red and red c and needed to ask which connecteor to use and suggested the RC :) Getting the wiring in the new Nest was uneventful there is a nice diagnostic screen that will let you know if you wiring is correct. It detected a Fan (Gr)but no connection, Green BTW is fan, so checked Gr and it was lose reconnected and was fine. First thing it did was make a wifi connection and download new firmware and rebooted.Pretty effortless. I've set temperatures and explored the various options , loaded the Ipad and Iphone apps and now have remote control of the thremostat - very nice. You can also access your nest thermostat and change temperatures from the Web. at their web site. Since only installed for less than 24 hours ,I'm not going to post any energy facts yet. I will say they learned from Apple in packaging and included a nice screw driver set as well.Well Done Nest.I would recommend this to a friend

NEST is very cool.Posted .
The NEST thermostat is a high quality, high tech product that gets most things right. In particular, rather than manually programming in a set point schedule (which you can do), it learns your schedule by observing your changes to the thermostat. So, during the first couple weeks, you really have to pay attention to doing that. Note that it does have light and motion sensors to figure out if you're home or away -- smart move. The NEST graphics and user interface are superb -- what you would expect on an iPhone rather than the typical incomprehensible set of obscure buttons and limited display available on most thermostats. I think it's no surprise that such innovation had to come from outside the traditional HVAC manufacturers (Honeywell, Trane, etc.) That the NEST learns the thermal charactersitics of your home, thereby knowing when to turn on the heat so that it hits your desired setpoint at the desired time, is nothing new; most newer programmable thermostats have this "adaptive recovery" feature. NEST has wisely learned the value of the "Prius effect" by displaying a green leaf icon when you've nudged the temperature down a couple degrees (during heating season) or up (during cooling season); this type simple positive feedback have proven effective changing behavior in several academic studies. I really like the iPhone access. If I'm in my bedroom and want to change the temp, I don't need to get out of bed. (Yeah, lazy...) However, combined with the great user interface, learning features, web / smartphone access, ease of install and good looks, this is really the best home thermostat out on the market. I would like to see NEST add options to display the outside temperature (available via the web) and the time on device. And, I would like to see web-based graphics (and downloadable data) of inside temp, outside temp and heat pump duty cycle so I can better understand my home heating system. Finally, I'd really like to see NEST++ where home electricity monitoring is built in. I'm excited to see where NEST is taking this product....and future products. To be fair, there are a few other a few other thermostats on the market, notable Ecobee, that have similar functionality....but frankly not as sexy as the NEST.I would recommend this to a friend

Incredible productPosted .
I had high expectations and the nest exceeded them. I cannot comment on the energy saving feature since it takes the nest one week of learning and I only got it two days ago, but here are my first impressions. Everything about the nest is greatly designed and shows a remarkable attention to details. The packaging is very well polished, with the neat screwdriver, the extra wall plates and very well-written installation instructions. The software than runs on the nest is beautiful and very simple to use. The internet services to control the nest remotely from the web or smart devices work flawlessly (you can change the temperature from your iPhone, and the nest picks it up within a few seconds). I enjoyed throwing my old thermostat from the 20th century in the garbage where it belonged. Nicely done, nest!I would recommend this to a friend

Great productPosted .
I got this thermostat and was immediately impressed by the quality of construction and the attractive appearance. The programmable thermostat I had was drab and ugly by comparison. Once the Nest was installed, it was immediately noticed by others. Some will tend pass over this product due to the relatively high price when compared to other cheaper models. In this case, you get what you pay for. The moment you take if out of the box, you will be impressed. Installation is a breeze. If you are simply replacing an existing thermostat it will only take a few minutes. Turn the power off, identify the wires (take a picture if you can), mount, hook up, turn power back on. Done. The wi-fi connection is a great tool. Unfortunately they only have an app for the iPhone, however, they say the Droid version will be here in Decemeber. You can't go wrong with this product. Does it save energy? Can't say yet, however, based on the history of the developers and designers, I am sure it will.I would recommend this to a friend
