Effortless connection to the existing Orbi system. The satellite provides range beyond my expectations.

I purchased the RBS50 Add On satellite to go with the RBK50 system I already had to expand my coverage in the house. I bought this unit before installing the router and satellite because I wanted to bring them all up at the same time. The reason I needed the additional satellite is because I have two PC's that are fed off of Ethernet cables. One is my Son's upstairs directly above my office and the other in my office. Another reason I was looking for a new WiFi solution was my cancelling of Comcast's 150 MBPS download/6 MBPS upload internet service. I was able to replace it with AT&T's Gigapower fiber-optic internet service with 840 MBPS download and 880 MBPS upload through the AT&T modem. My previous router was the Netgear Nighthawk X6000 AC3200 router with a Nighthawk EX7000 AC1900 Exrtender in my office and an old Linksys extender in my Son's room. My office and my Son's room are 50-60 feet away from the router passing through several walls. The performance metrics below will highlight why I began looking for better networking equipment. My PC: 150 MBPS download / 300 MBPS upload Son's PC: 60 MBPS down / 65 MBPS up iPad 15 feet from the router: 99 MBPS down / 100 MBPS up iPhone 6s same distance: Same results as above. Installed the Orbi system. The add on satellite synced flawlessly with the router as did the other satellite. A quick call to Netgear support got me past a sticking point associated with the Orbi app. I updated the satellite firmware, then the router firmware. I went to both PC's and measured the hoped for improvement. I was hoping to double my previous performance at a minimum. I was not prepared for the actual performance. My PC: 643 MBPS download / 740 MBPS upload Son's PC: 533 MBPS down / 640 MBPS up iPad 15 feet from the router: 500 MBPS down / 550 MBPS up iPhone 6s same distance: 375 MBPS down / 450 MBPS up The improvement in performance is 4 fold to 9 fold better than my previous Netgear equipment which is only 3 years old. I am astonished at the performance. I check the performance everytime I get on my PC and it is rock solid stable at the numbers above. The Orbi WiFi system is everything I thought it would be and THEN SOME. It is amazing technology and I can't wait to see what Netgear does for an encore!

This is my third Wi-Fi mesh system I have used, and the Orbi is excellent. What I like best about the Orbi is that it has fast performance and able to cover a large area because it has a dedicated 5 mHz band for back haul connection. Some mesh Wi-Fi systems and repeaters loss up to half the speed when using the extender or additional mesh unit. The dedicated channel for backhaul lets you experience faster speeds with your additional Orbi units. I have 50 up and 5 down cable internet. In my main room with the router and modem I can get speeds of up to 61 Mbps up and 6 Mbps down. In my living room I have an additional Orbi unit. I experience the exact same numbers. With my old systems my speed would be around 25 Mbps down and 2 Mbps Up. The Orbi I was able to have the exact same speeds 61 Mbps down and 6 Mbps up. I experienced the same numbers where I watch streaming down stairs with an iPad pro. No longer do I experience any buffering or lose of signal and clarity has been greatly improved. I set a third Orbi unit in my garage and here is where I love it. Speeds in my garage used to by 3 Mbps down and >1 Mbps up. With the Orbi I know have 40 Mbps down and 5 Mbps down. By my pool I could never have a signal and now my speeds are 30 Mbps down and 4 down. At the back of my property (3/4 of an acre about 120 feet from the main router and 100 feet from the 3rd Orbi unit) I have speeds of up to 30 Mbps down and 3 Mbps down. I now have internet all over my house and yard. I have an older house with plaster and concrete drywall, with a tiled full shower so there is a lot of barriers in my house preventing a strong signal. Set up is through the website which can be slightly painful. I had to update the router and satellites and it took a while. I finally had to update them manually and it took several attempts to do this. There is an app, which shows you what is available and working, but it doesn’t really let you do much with the Orbi system. I did not noticing a downgrade in performance when walking around my yard and house as I traveled from satellite to satellite and router. I like how the units are more vertical which leaves more space for other items on desks and shelves. This is one of the better Wi-Fi mesh units out here if you are willing to upgrade the firmware and set up the system through your browser.
