Synopsis

Newsies
A failed effort to revive the big-budget movie musical, Newsies attempted to create toe-tapping, song-and-dance excitement out of the true story of an 1899 strike by newspaper boys against publishing magnate Joseph Pulitzer. The "newsies" band together to protest a pay cut by Pulitzer (Robert Duvall), organizing a union to protect their rights and ensure fair wages. They are helped along the way by Medda (Ann-Margret), a local dance-hall performer who befriends the boys and provides an opportunity for an additional song or two. Director Kenny Ortega had previously choreographed Dirty Dancing, and composer Alan Menken had provided the acclaimed scores for Beauty and the Beast and Little Shop of Horrors, but their work here failed to capture the spark of their popular successes. Unable to connect with older or younger viewers, Newsies gained a reputation as a major bomb that cut short an attempt to bring back the live-action musical, though in the intervening years it has gained a small but appreciative cult. ~ Judd Blaise, Rovi

Child Labor was never more fun.

I remember seeing this movie as a child in the early nineties. For days afterwards I was singing along with my vhs copy, to songs like "The World Will Know," "King of New York," and of course, "Seize The Day." The VHS wore out and DVD came into play, Newsies became nigh on impossible to find in my area. So it became forgotten. Then one day it showed up on a movie channel, and I was hooked. American Psycho had come and gone, so Christian Bale was a little bit harder to view as the sad hero of the newsboy's union, but with time, Jack came back to the surface. Along with Luke Edwards who played Nintendo prodigy Jimmy Woods in the Wizard; David Moscow, the boy who would grow up to be Tom Hanks in Big and Max Casella, aka Doogie Howser's bud Vinnie Delpino Christian Bale dances and sings Ruthless newspaper magnates like Joseph Pullitzer and William Randolph Hearst into submission. Though the story deals with a possibly depressing subject (child labor, strikes, Bill Pullman singing) you can't help but smile when those kids hit the streets and sing out with many of their musical numbers. And I was just kidding about Bill Pullman, he did fine.

Newsies is perfect, not in spite of, but because of its imperfection. Great music and dancing, incredible energy and enthusiasm from a cast with raw talent, and an uplifting story. I have loved this film for 20 years and every time I watch it I remember why. Watching Newsies will always make you feel better and inspire you to go out and pursue your dreams, while fighting for your rights. The number of people who love Newsies is not small - two generations of dreamers already. Finally a Blu-Ray so Newsies can return to its big-screen glory. Carryin' the banner!

Newsies is a movie from the early 90s. It was widely panned at the start but now has a very big cult following. As a fan of the movie and the musical I can say this is the best musical movie out there. The music and the story is absolutely amazing and you will leave the movie singing every single song in the movie!! Alan Menken wrote all of the music with his true style of music. In every song you can go from listening about a rebellion to hearing about a girl one of the guys likes. It is a very powerful and uplifting movie. Definitely a MUST BUY! It looks great on Blu-ray!

Purchased due to children losing library copy, but they loved it! It is fun to watch Christian Bale do the dancing and other stuff prior to his role in Batman
