Exactly What I Wanted from Nintendo's Next Console

I have had this system for over a week now, and let me just say that it is absolutely everything I've wanted and more from Nintendo this generation. I got my switch for my birthday 7 years ago in 2018. I fell in love, and ever since I've spent hundreds of hours on Smash Brothers, Mario Kart, Splatoon, Pokemon, and more. (I have a total of 550 hours on smash, which is a lot for me!) Now with the switch 2, and now that I'm a lot older, I really feel like this is going to be a system I'm really going to enjoy. Especially since it's just continuing the Switch line of consoles, and making it so much better! So to start with the things I love about it so far: I love the new design. This console definitely feels like a $450 device. The metal-ish combined with plastic-y design feels so premium, and when I held it for the first time, I really felt like it was premium, and worth it (in terms of design). Next, I love the magnetic joy cons. This was a great idea, Nintendo because it's a great new gimmick that is just really cool this time around. On the original switch, it was the satisfying slide onto the joy con rail. Now it's the magnetic 'CLICK' that is even more satisfying than the original method. The joy cons this time around, with the magnetism, are also way more durable and sturdy than the original Switch joy cons! I can't really even get them off of the system by just pulling anymore. (That was an issue later in my old switch's life!) Next, I HAVE to talk about the games, specifically Mario Kart World. I have absolutely loved this game, and I've already put in 15 hours in 1 week. I won't spoil anything, but this game is massive, and just what we all needed from a Mario Kart refresh 10 years later! I also have loved having the backwards compatibility this time around. The system transfer brought over all of my old games, and now I can play most of them (if not all) on the new system, and some with huge Switch 2 editions and upgrades! The console's power has also been something that I've really liked. It really has delivered on the power this time around. It isn't quite ps5 level, but it's in between Xbox series S and PS4 Pro, which for me, is perfect, actually beyond perfect! So all in all, the system I have absolutely loved. I also can't wait to see what other Nintendo games are in store for the rest of this year, and on. Honestly for my concerns, the only thing I would say that I don't like about the system, along with many others, are the prices. $80 for a video game is really pushing it, and luckily I bought the bundle for Mario Kart World so I saved $30. But I won't be buying any other $80 video games unless I think it is genuinely worth it! All in all, great console, Nintendo. Keep it up, and I hope everyone who's read this now has a better understanding of what a great console this is!

Not perfect, but it's still a huge upgrade.

Right out of the box, the feel of the Switch 2 is just a net positive experience, no more cheap plastic feeling joycons or back of the screen, it feels much more durable and less like a toy. Personally I had to transfer all my data from my Switch 1, and it was a super simple experience that I feel even a small child could do it. Install speed of games? Also much faster than they were previously, Mario Kart World took me maybe 35-40 minutes to download on a 500mb connection, and the actual install was probably close to around 5 minutes for me. Not gonna lie, the dock feels a bit of a let down though. The back cover of it is no longer on a swing, it now just pops on and off and if you lose it, well it might as well be gone forever. It doesn't really keep the Switch 2 cool either, it's vents are more or less to keep the dock itself at a decent temp. Ethernet port on the back is a nice touch though. Game performance is quite the improvement all around. Every game I've tested personally loaded faster, and in the case of the free upgrade to Gen 9 Pokemon games, the improvements are like night and day and I don't think I can ever go back to playing those on my Switch 1. I'm looking forward to the Switch 2 Edition of the new Legends game later this year while also feeling bad for anyone who has yet to get their hands on a Switch 2 and won't be able to experience the resolution, loading, and fps upgrades. Games that didn't receive an update though? They're kinda struggling if I'm being honest. I tried playing Legends Arceus, and while the load time is better for sure, the fps remains locked at 30 and it's resolution looks like it's getting stretched and makes it actually look worse than the Switch 1, same goes for Sword and Shield. Mario Kart World. Boy oh boy, this was the one I was hyped for. While everyone was complaining saying it looked empty or that the tracks were uninspired, I was excited. It's my first Mario Kart since Double Dash on the Gamecube and I started back on Mario Kart 64, so all these new features, graphics and mechanics are amazing to me, so it makes me so happy that I got the bundle that included the game. Some quick pros and cons though to wrap this up. Pros: -Faster EShop -More responsive UI -DLSS putting in a lot of work -HDR -120fps in some games -Mouse Controls on shooters -Welcome Tour giving insane amounts of info on the inner workings of the console -Magnetic Joycons feel so satisfying to snap back onto it -The kickstand on the back is a massive upgrade from the Switch 1, durable, sturdy, and can go further back Cons: -Some older games look terrible without resolution updates -Any data transferred that wasn't a cloud save is deleted from the Switch 1 -Some people are complaining about stick drift on the joycons, no issue for me yet -Some reports of scratches or dead pixels right out of the box, no issue for me yet -Welcome Tour not being free despite it containing a lot of info on the console that users would like to know -Picks up dust kinda easily even if used a lot -Random spots on the dock that make it look like someone wiped a hand on it that just won't come off for some reason -Different color options for joycons not readily available at launch

I like it but it SHOULD be better

I’ve been gaming with my Nintendo switch 2 for almost two weeks now and while initially I wasn’t super thrilled to get my hands on it, it’s kind of grown on me over the past couple of days. I’ll start by saying I’m kind of a sucker for all things Nintendo. I’ve owned just about every console they’ve released. Including most recently the Switch 1, switch lite and switch OLED. So it’s hard for me not to compare it to the previous consoles. But I’m being honest because chances are.. if you’re looking to buy the switch 2, you probably already own one of the previous Switch consoles. I’ll start with the things I like about it. This new console does feel quicker. Especially when loading menus and games. I justified my purchase by telling myself I would play the huge backlog of Switch games that I own and this was the biggest reason for me buying this console. I still enjoy playing Nintendo games on the go, and the old console was showing its age. So “upgrading” to this console was an easy decision for me. The joycons feel better in the hand while in handheld mode. They are larger, the triggers are more comfortable and it overall feels better in my hand. The magnetic system for attaching the joycons is way easier to use and less prone to getting stuck and breaking. My gripes with this console are the battery life. I get at most maybe 3 hours out of it before I need to plug it into the wall outlet. Not a huge deal since I don’t game handheld for more than an hour at a time. But still, I imagine the battery will degrade quicker in the long run because you will constantly need to charge this. The screen : although it is larger and looks nice, it is noticeably worse in some aspects (to my eyes) compared to the switch OLED. This screen has worse contrast and color saturation. And there is the obvious IPS glow when looking at it in black screens and from side angles. Another thing I’ve noticed is that is ghosting, once you notice it.. it’s hard to unsee it. It’s not a huge dealbreaker.. but I feel like at this price.. Nintendo should’ve put a better screen in it. One other con is that there isn’t many games out for it YET.. and majority of the third party games so far are just “key card cartridges” meaning that you will have to download the game onto your micro SD card. And the new micro SD cards are really expensive. I think this will ultimately hurt the long term health of the switch 2 unless Nintendo forces developers to keep games on the cartridge. A 1TB micro sd express card costs $200, if you can find one. They are super hard to find and expensive. I settled for a 256gb micro sd express card which cost me $70. Expensive in my opinion, and it will probably only hold a handful of switch 2 games. For now, there is no external SSD support when docked or in handheld mode, so expect to pay a hefty amount to expand your consoles storage. All in all… I like it. Could it be better? Definitely. Would I recommend it? Hard to say. Yes and no. If you love Nintendo games and gotta have the newest from them you’ll be like me and get it anyway. But I’d advise most people to just wait a little while longer until there is more games for the switch 2, and alternative storage options.
