People forget that Owen Wilson did a good drama role as a Navy pilot in Behind Enemy Lines (2001). Forget the PC critics, this is a suspense action movie worth watching. An American family moving to Thailand (my guess) to make a new start. We take things for granted as Americans and expect to live overseas without difficulty or inconvenience. This movie shows how quickly political climate can change in a country, 17 hours to be exact; for the Dwyer family. A simple story line that must have gone deep into the critics psyche. A family fighting for their life, trying to escape an internal civil war or a revolution without social order or peaceful demonstrations. Jack Dwyer (Owen Wilson) leaves the hotel to grab a newspaper, and sees the storm gathering in the streets. His life and his families will change for the worse right before his eyes. He takes off like a fugitive for his life to save his family back at the hotel. Critics are crying about the lack of a plot, it is what it is; a family fighting for survival while death surrounds them. A stranger who shares a common language, reaches out to help them; Hammond (Pierce Brosnan) who knows the land and it's people. A dynamic role for him, he lights up the screen as a guardian angel of sorts. This movie delivers tension, action, life and death decisions that must be made, at a steady to fast pace. I haven't held my breath like this since the first Die Hard movie. A pleasant surprise in a sequel flashback summer of doldrums. It is rated R for a reason due to violence and blood, only those kids 16 and up should view this.

This is an excellent film if you can get it for the right amount of money. Why say that? Well I don't believe Its worth the full release day price but was willing to pay $14.99. I watch all films on my 180" Screen with full 7.1 surround and buttkicker transducers. The Video was dark, but good and audio was outstanding. How was the movie you wonder? Well without ruining anything Id say its right on! In fact if you have children and have ever vacationed in a 3rd world country or worse then this film will be a great eye opener to just what could happen and how brutal surviving can be. There's a scene where Owen Wilson (Hero/ Dad) has to save his family on a roof top & when you have kids things are not easy! I LOVED IT! So realistic! Kids don't always jump, they cling, get scared and just cant always understand dangers...... I truly believe the director met his goals of making an Action thriller that encompassed a good amount of drama. The trick question is; How often will I watch it? That tuff. It resonated so well that I remembered so much of the film. This takes away replay-ability. If money isn't an issue then enjoy. If you have a price per watch thing going on Id guess ill watch it every other year? Its hard to say. It made for a good one time story I wont soon forget... Recommend for impact.

    Family trying to survive

Well written and thought out movie on a family trying to survive a violent coup after recently arriving in a new foreign country. This movie takes places in southeast Asia and depicts a father relocating to his new job with his wife and two daughters. The government is overthrown and the rebels start killing all foreigners and those who work with foreigners (such as the hotel staff). The movie has some gut checking moments on how can one get their young kids to listen and escape when a mob of crazed thugs are chasing you? Unless there is a random government agent who is able to make a miraculous save, one shouldn’t plan on traveling to unstable countries.

Our outdoor activities had to be cancelled due to rainy, wet weather that came at a most inopportune time. With teenagers bored with card games and boring afternoon television fare--we bought this movie in a desperate attempt at suitable entertainment. We were pleasantly surprised in a good sort of way by the durability and believeability of the story line. While some violence and cursing was peppered throughout the movie--thankfully it was only briefly intermittent at most situations. Definitely NOT a movie for small children, as it could provide a strong stimulus for later nightmares.

Great cast, great plot, great execution! Definitely not a movie for those who don't enjoy a thrill. The movie is violent and gets a bit graphic and suspenseful at times. A great portrayal of how order and law can break down quickly in politically unstable cities. I wasn't terribly pleased with the underlying message about how the US destroys local economies and so on, but overall, it was a great film.

Owen did well in this out-of-norm role. Lake and rest of cast were great too. I travel often and it made it more real for me given that it was not some typical action superstar but rather a every day average dude trying to keep his family alive. Grossly underrated movie from my perspective.
