genius veiled in obscurityJune 6, 2008
this band continues to do nothing but astound me. i've followed them for years, constantly being blown away by their ingenuity as well as my own sheer inability to put any kind of label on them. describing themselves as brechtian punk cabaret, the boston-based duo of amanda palmer and brian viglione weave together an enigmatic web of innovative anachronistic lyrics and addictive melodies that hark back to smoky, risque nightclubs of days gone by. their latest gem, "no, virginia" is a collection of oddities from the "yes, virginia" and winter '08 sessions that deserve just as much praise as their full-length album counterparts. the lyrics are as witty and biting as ever, amanda’s voice is point-perfect in it’s spine-chilling richness, and the instrumentals are at their finest. both quirky and over-the-top finger-snappers and brooding ballads suit the dresden dolls, with a nice mixture of the two presented on this platter of excellence. “lonesome organist r***s page-turner” is an upbeat shocker of the dark cabaret variety, whereas the foreboding “the gardener” ever so subtly sinks its teeth into its listener. well worth shelling out a few dollars for another masterpiece by one of today’s truly unique bands in a sea of unoriginal and uninspiring crowd-manufactured clones.
I would recommend this to a friend
