A problem waiting to happen.
Posted .I bought this item to replace my point and shoot camera. I saw 41 mp and had to have it as it was more than double than my point and shoot camera. I purchased it with an add a line option and then suspended the line as I will not be using it as a phone. I used it once as a phone and the call quality was great but I am keeping my iphone as my cell phone. Before these issues started I had noticed the shutter was very noisy. I purchased my device on april 2nd and by april 27th it was no longer working. I went out to the local craft fairs and took some pictures. At the end of the day I went to take pictures of Items I had purchased but when I clicked on the camera app it crashed back to the home screen. I turned it off and tried again when I woke up the next morning (aprox 10 hours later) I tried again and it still wasn't working. So I connected to wifi and backed up the few pictures I had taken to sky drive and then did a master reset. After the master reset the pro camera just loaded a black screen and nothing else. The smart camera tells me something went wrong the camera failed to launch. I did a master reset a few times I guess being anxious just hopping this device that I invested in would start working. I looked online for other people with the same complaint. I found many people saying it stopped working after 25 days (exactly when my issues started). I turned the device off and put it in my purse to deal with later. When I got home from work and pulled the phone out of my purse the flash was on. I turned the phone on and back off hoping it would turn off and it stayed on and would not go off till the phone died. I then headed to Nokia's site and started the long process of submitting a device for repair. While I was at it I used their desktop program to reload the operating system on the device, hoping the whole time it would fix it. 1 hr later the problem continued and the flash was still on. I printed the return label from nokia and sent it off the next day. I am waiting for my replacement device and I have my fingers crossed this doesn't happen again. Glad I kept my camera after all until this is over. PS being an iphone user for years I found the device to have a slow response time.

Learning curve.
|Posted .First the bad: Coming from an IPhone 4, my old phone was a lot smaller, so getting use to the size was a major difference. additionally, the Nokia 1020 does not sit flat on its back (like every other phone) because of the GIGANTIC camera on the back (but I'm willing to sacrifice that feature for the amazing picture quality). This is not the phone you keep in your back pocket. Even though I purchased the BestBuy protection software, I am in constant worry of breaking the lens on my camera or damaging the face in any way. This phone is not for those users who enjoy the super-simplisitc approach of the IOS software (even though the IOS 7 update is pretty stinkin cool). Something that I miss about the IPhone is the drop down menu from the top of the screen, it allowed easy access to everything that you missed while your phone was unattended. Now the good: I LOVE LOVE LOVE this camera. It is by far the best thing about this phone, obviously. IPhone rear camera = 5MP, Nokia 1020 rear camera 41MP. Clearly, the Nokia has the better camera. I can fully zoom in the camera, focus, and after the picture is taken it zooms even more! And I can clearly see my friends football jersey numbers from the middle of the stands half way up. I love the "group" contact feature. I can choose to add as many groups as I want to, and in each group I can add people. For example, I have several jobs, and its sometimes a hassle to think about who i work with at each job, so each job got a group. And each contact has a link to their Twitter, Facebook, (or any other social media), along with any other pertinent information. Plus with the social media updates, I get their status updates right to my phone (kinda cool/stalkerish). The homepage is completely customizable to fit you with the different size options for the tiles, along with the settings options. Call quality is awesome. This phone is amazing, and I brag about it to my friends all the time when they ask about it. I would recommend purchasing a screen protector for this phone (I purchased an ArmorSuit MilitaryShield, and it has "healing properties") Last thing, I have only dropped my phone once (I have butterfingers), and the large reason I haven't dropped it more is the handy hand strap that came with my phone.

Best Camera for Smart Phones to date
|Posted .I would recommend this to a friendLeft Apple Iphone to try something different, I had this phone for month so far. Good: 1.Camera pictures are detailed and the best you can get 2. phone display/view is on comparable to Apple so called retina display 3. Speaker sound is loud and no real need for an external speaker 4. you are able to xfer your Itunes Music to this phone w/ use of a PC (latest OS Windows 8 is needed for simplicity though but you are able to use past OS) Bad: Overall I love the phone and currently do not miss my Iphone but everything has its weaknesses 1: APPs are not on par with Apple, Currently I am able to get Apps for my main faves such as Instagram and Facebook but apps are limited for Windows. Their is comparable apps for different interest but alot of apps do not work correctly. Then some of the apps you paid for before, are not transferable for free, not a windows issue but the App developers fault. One last note The camera is not user friendly for this particular model, I have knowledge of Photography so Aperture, ISO and so on I am familiar with but for the newbies this is not a regular camera phone but truly a a point and shoot camera. Meaning people w/ no knowledge of Photography will have a lot of hits and misses taking photos, but knowledge can be gain from education books or youtube. Recommend this phone for Photography lovers and fans,

Great Device
Posted .I'm a mobile developer. So I've got all the latest and greatest phones from the top end iPhone 5 (running an iOS7 beta) to HTC Ones. But I wanted to "think different" for my personal phone and got me a Lumia. THE CAMERA I always used to reach for my iPhone 5 when I wanted a quick casual shot. But now, I reach for the 1020. The 41 megapixel camera is nothing short of astounding. Only a high end Canon DSLR has so far managed to crank out images that rival the shooter on the Lumia. The ability to shoot, and then re-crop within the photo has changed the way I look at smartphone photography. Yes, the circular camera assembly in the back looks a bit weird at first...and the phone rests at an angle when laid on its back...but I've grown attached to it. And boy does it crank out beautiful images. I also love the feel of the mechanical lens shutter when you boot the camera up. Nokia's Smart Camera app has a great interface for adjusting white balance, shutter speed, and aperture giving me crazy levels of control on the fly. It's even faster to use than my NEX-5 and the quality rivals that of thousand dollar DSLR and mirrorless setups that I've had. Yes...it's $300 on contract (more if you buy it straight)...but the camera alone for its quality and compactness is worth it. THE OS I like Windows Phones. Sure, there aren't a lot of apps in the marketplace. But the OS is one of the most tightly focused and efficient UIs I've come across. The phone does a lot natively...from music identification to local searches. I even pick up my phone to manage my email over using Mail on my MacBook Pro. Oh...and the ability to download maps and use the GPS without data service is a boon for any traveller. I've used Lumias to navigate China, the Middle East, the UK, and France without having to pay extra for expensive data plans. The 1020 is also the first phone to come with the Amber update...so there are a few new soft features, like letting the phone tell you what time it is even with the screen "off". One gripe: voice commands aren't as good as Siri (which isn't perfect) and I do love Google Now's near psychic levels of prescience. BUILD QUALITY The Lumia 1020 meets or exceeds the (great) build quality of any of the devices in my gadget bag. The polycarbonate body is built like a tank. Where my iPhone is always covered by an invisible shield, I've never bothered with my Lumias. The body shrugs off everyday damage that have rendered previous iPhones scratched and ugly messes. I accidentally dropped my phone on concrete from chest height (a similar drop shattered an iPhone 4) and all I got was a tiny nick on the black camera assembly - perhaps the least tough part of the phone. Buttons are snappy, and have a satisfying click and solidity to them. They don't feel like they'll eventually malfunction, much the way the home button on my iPhone 4s did. There's also an attachable lanyard which surprised me by how often I wound up using it. Yes, it's not the prettiest and lightest phone...but it's one of the toughest, most well made devices I've had. And the camera...oh the camera. It is simply an insanely great shooter. If you can live without Angry Birds and Instagram and would like something different than the flood of Galaxy S4s and iPhones, it's a great phone to consider and a phenomenal camera to have around.

The best phone I've used.
|Posted .I would recommend this to a friendHonestly, Windows Phone 8.1 is fantastic. 8 wasn't bad either but the additional features of 8.1/cyan have made this phone about perfect. Durable, good battery life, best phone camera, fast even though the model is a year old. Windows Phone is just fast. Really the only problem is there isn't as many apps as for Android phones or iPhones. But, MS/Nokia has a perfect opportunity to take the niche that belonged to Blackberry in the past. Full Office on the phone and full integration with my other Microsoft devices and computers really makes things easy. This phone won't be available much longer but Windows Phone 8.1 should be definitely something to consider. It's faster and more stable than Android. It's faster on slower hardware than the iPhone. New phones will come out soon, and give them a try before just going with another iPhone or Galaxy.

Awesome camera with a phone attached
Posted .I would recommend this to a friendI have had Nokia phones in the past and am very impressed with them. I grew tired of the iPhone so when I saw the Nokia 1020 I had to look at it. In the store, I was impressed with the camera quality. I am not a big picture taker so I do not stay up with the camera technology trends. However, after taking my first few pictures I am converted. I find myself whipping out the phone often now just to take pictures. The editing capabilities are awesome as well. I was able to photograph a raccoon one night while out walking my dog. The subject was climbing a tree in the shadows. I snapped a quick picture and returned home. Using the Smart Camera features (included with the phone), I was able to zoom in, increase the brightness and adjust the colors. I sent it to my wife to see and she asked how I was able to get so close. Despite all of the editing I did, the picture showed no pixilation and it looked like I was three feet from the raccoon when I was actually about 15 feet away. As the title says, it is an awesome camera. In addition, the Here Drive+ GPS navigation software is awesome. The ability to change the language and the ability to have the app say turn-by-turn directions along with the visual display is incredible. One word of advice I would give is to use the included carrying strap. I know it sounds lame. Nevertheless, the form factor of the phone is so thin that when I pull it out it is easy to drop. By having the strap I have saved the phone from many a drops. Although I am sure that the gorilla glass is tough to withstand most falls I would hate to scratch such a beautiful phone.

Posted ."My family has the latest apple and samsung phones, but I've been counting down the days for this phone and it didn't disappoint. I don't take pictures much, but you'll want to take pictures every second because it's like capturing life, I can't describe it any other way. This phone will really change your life. Everyone in my family now wants to trade in their iphone or S4 for this phone now. You can literally take a picture of a city skyline and zoom into the building windows. I'm in LOVE."
