The product does an excellent job replacing my smart TV. It is very fast and responsive. I love the way it allows you to organize the front screen. Easily placing icons in the desired order. I also like that it suggests trending items to view or play on the front screen. It made several suggestions of shows I would like on you tube so I did not have to look them up myself. The remote PC game play is awesome, I was streaming my pc games at 2560x1200 resolution with no lag at all with a nvidia 970 chipset. But, I am also connected to my pc through a cat 6 line so I get really good connection speeds. There is also an option to play games on nvidia's network over the Internet where games are run on a super charged pc with an nvidia 1080 graphics card. The games were really smooth and fast for me on nvidia's site but then again I do have an Internet connection of 75mps up and down. Also, the controller it comes with is really nice and comfortable to use. I was able to successfully pair two addition ps4 controllers to the unit. It was pretty awesome, I was streaming Trine 3 in hires from my pc to the tv while playing with 2 friends. I was using the nvidia shield controller and they were using the ps4 controllers. If you wanted to you could just use the ps4 controller and not the nvidia controller at all. Just to note, i did pair a ps3 controller to the unit but was unable to pair more than one, it seems to be impossible to pair more than one ps3 contoller. Also, the only bad site about pairing a ps4 controller is you have to shut it off manually after you turn off the nvidia shield otherwise it just stays on. You shut it down by holding the ps button down for 10 seconds. I also paired my harmony remote with the nvidia shield perfectly, so now i can navigate all the menus with no problem even in apps like hulu. But, please note if you have a harmony that only does inferred the you need to buy THIS nvidia shield and not the 16 gig version which does not come with an inferred receiver. All in all the unit is incredible and hands down the smartest device out there, but I would buy the unit with 16 gigs and save $100. Put that $100 toward a portable hard drive with 2 tb of space and attach that instead of buying the 512 gigs which is a hard drive anyway. If it was a ssd instead I would say it was worth the extra $100. I think nvidia should drop the price to $250 which is a better price range for this product. Just note that if you attach a drive to the unit and you want to store games and apps on it then you will in to replace the originalast memory I the unit. So, for example you bought the 512 gig nvidia shield and you run out of room and want more space for games and apps, so you attach a 2tb drive to it later. Unfortunately, Android will only allow one encrypted drive at a time, so your internal drive will be disabled to allow users of the 2tb drive. This is why I recommend the 16gig version because then you are throwing away 16 gigs instead of 512.

A downgrade from 2015 Nvidia Shield 16GB Model

Since my 2015 model nVidia Shield 16GB (remote included in bundle for $199) after the Android 7.0 update was having issues with the remote and controller pairing (I dont think i saw an update for the accessories), I returned it to get the 2017 Pro model and was highly disappointed of the extra $100 I paid for this. -The 2017 pro device has the same footprint of the 2015 device. It lookes like nVidia just repackaged the returned shields back in the box. My device didnt have the plastic on top of the shiny part of the device either like the 16GB had. -The pro 500GB model is definitely slower than the 2015 16GB model. I believe the pro model uses 5400RPM spin drive inside since I can hear it constantly compared to 2015 16GB which had flash storage -No upgraded remote like the 2017 16GB Models. This comes with the same old remote with the previous generation with rechargeable battery that only last a few days. -No HDMI cable included in the 2017 Model either -The controller feels cheap compared to old generation This is good for people buying their first Shield that need the IR Receiver. I believe that's the only advantage the Pro has over the 16GB model. -

      Hi,
We are sorry to hear about your experience and hope we can provide some more information here to help you with your purchase decision. The current SHIELD TV Pro streaming box is the same version that began selling in 2015. What’s new in the product bundle selling today is our brand new game controller plus a media remote for free in the box. The previous bundle did not include a remote. The remote also includes a headset jack for private listening (a feature that the 16GB version does not have). The game controller is also a substantial upgrade from the previous controller (now including dual vibration feedback, 60hr gaming battery life, and an IR blaster for controlling TV volume). The throwaway plastic film was removed to make the product more environmentally safe. If you have any further questions, please contact our 24/7 customer care at www.nvidia.com/nvcc and provide this reference number 170207-000341 specific to your case and we would be happy to help. nvidia

I have used them all and this IS THE BEST streamer

I have used all the streaming boxes at least the most popular ones so far like Amazon fire TV, Apple TV, Roku and many of the different android TV boxes. The Nvidia shield is the best. There are no issues loading SPMC. The Nvidia shield supports Bluetooth keyboards and mice so you get a mouse interface with almost every application. I personally use a track ball. So convenient. If you buy the pro, especially the pro, my favorite, I have both, the pro allows you to have IR control meaning the Nvidia Shield remote will also control the volume of your receiver if you're running your home theater through a receiver or it will control the audio on your TV. The applications for the Nvidia Shield are plentiful, its running Android TV the most current BTW. I'm only using a handful of the major cable programs like Netflix, Stars, HBO, SPMC which is a fork of Kodi. What is most important to me is the ability to load from Plex using SPMC all of my DOLBY ATMOS DEMOS and because SPMC outputs bitstream I can listen to true Dolby ATMOS. THERE IS NO OTHER STREAMING BOX KNOWN TO ME THAT WILL OUTPUT BITSTREAM ATMOS CODE. The only other way besides this streaming box to get DOLBY ATMOS is to use a blu-ray encoded with DOLBY ATMOS and of course that plays just fine. I am sure there are other streaming boxes that Run android TV so you can intern run SPMC. I suppose these my DECODE DOLBY ATMOS. Then there is the processor that Nvidia Shield runs, the most powerful streaming box there is. All the interfaces run so fast, there is no lag for loading a app or video, its almost instant. My 2 cents. the Nvidia Shield is not cheap but if you play games and want the most powerful streamer out there, this is it. Can't wait to see what the upgrade will be like. Ted

If you are not a hardcore gamer and you are looking an Android TV box with gaming features, go with the normal Shield TV (16gb). I bought the Sheild pro last week, just so that I can play more hardcore NVIDIA games rather than the android games. But, to my surprise, there were some games which were not shielded controller friendly and some had terrible video lag (for instance I tried Sniper V2, modern combat, and The Bureau). So, I contacted NVIDIA and explained them the problem, after which they told me to connect my controller to the box and then play. I mean seriously! who does that? So, if you are a hardcore gamer and are looking for Android TV box you will be disappointed by Shield Pro you should consider buying PS4 instead as you can get it at the same price from best buy. If you are looking for an Android TV with recreational gaming like me, go with the Shield TV (and not pro) and save 100 bucks!

      Hi,
We’re sorry to hear about your gaming experience. If you were playing Sniper V2 and The Bureau then they were being streamed from GeForce NOW, relying heavily on your internet connection. SHIELD Pro is not needed in this case since the games are not being saved locally to your hard disk. SHIELD TV (16GB) can stream these games just like SHIELD Pro. SHIELD Pro is recommended for playing high end Android games (that require a lot of storage space) or for the media server functionality (storing your personal collection of media on SHIELD). The recommendation to wire the controller should not have been provided. Please reach out to us at SHIELD-BBY-support@nvidia.com and include a link to this review so that we can help you out further with your gaming set up. nvidia

So far the shield has been great for what I wanted it for. First I wanted a second platform for a plex server. It seems to fill that roll pretty well. There are some known issues so do your research and know what to expect. I also wanted a decent platform for quick tv based games. I still have an ouya which I thought was a great idea, but it ultimately failed because of poor execution. This far surpasses anything ouya ever thought of. The ability to stream games from Nvidia's game service or a local computer make this so much more then you would originally think. 4k is also a great thing from this device. One thing to remember though is that some services need HDCP2.2 to provide 4k. Allot of tv's may have limitations around what ports support that with other features. For me to use 4k and have HDCP 2.2 I have to use a port that doesn't have HER support. Just check and know your hardware

The Nvidia Shield comes with tons of apps preinstalled including Netflix, Amazon, HBO, Sling, and Hulu (all pay services). Additionally, you can download just about any app from the Google Play store. The Shield is faster than other TV boxes and uses hardware acceleration to render the screen. The video playback is flawless with rarely any pixilation. It comes with a wired connection, and also a fast wireless connection. You can connect an approved wireless keyboard (not included) as in the Logitech K400 Plus to allow complete access to the web using Google Chrome. There is a good selection of games available that are really fun, however; none of them are truly video intensive. There are quite a few games designed specifically for the Shield. At least from what I have played so far, the Shield plays all of the games available on GeForce Now.

For $2.99 or maybe even $29.99 this might be worth the money, but it is absolutely not worth the cost! Avoid the mistake I made and spend your money on something else. Some details. The remote is cheap and Bluetooth only, which would be fine if this were the cheap model, but it is the PRO! The interface is pathetic. I understand this is a limitation of Android, but a Nvidia has such a poor implementation that I would call it mutually pathetic. Menus aren't customizable. Why must every device go to nothing but voice? I don't need the button wasted on the remote and I certainly don't need the privacy concerns that go with it (Yes, Amazon can keep their Alexa invasion to themselves). Finally, performance is abysmal. At least for me, where I am testing the edges of wifi, the performance is no faster than a "smart tv", so why pay extra? Just buy the Roku or Chromecast you were looking at and save yourself hundreds. This one is a fail.

Great Android TV, Terrible Plex Server

    Posted
    PlexUser

While the Nvidia Shield offers a high quality user interface especially with the new Oreo update it is completely unable to support a Plex Media Server. The Shield will drop mounted NAS devices and will not be able to stream 1080p quality video content consistently without skipping or losing connection. This device is not capable at all to be a Plex Media Server despite what all the paid youtubers say about it. The Nvidia Shield TV stands up fine to other devices such as Roku and Fire TV which are all more or less equal, but is in no way capable of supporting a Plex Media Server, don't buy this for a Plex Media Server. And the product support provided by Nvidia is terrible.
