Synopsis

Out of Africa
Out of Africa is drawn from the life and writings of Danish author Isak Dinesen, who during the time that the film's events occured was known by her married name, Karen Blixen-Flecke. For convenience's sake, Karen (Meryl Streep) has married Baron Bor Blixen-Flecke (Klaus Maria Brandauer). In 1914, the Baron moves himself and his wife to a plantation in Nairobi, then leaves Karen to her own devices as he returns to his womanizing and drinking. Soon, Karen has fallen in love with charming white hunter Denys Finch Hatton (Robert Redford), who prefers a no-strings relationship. A woman who prides herself on her independence, Blixen finds herself unhappily in thrall to an aloof man -- and doubly unhappy for living out such a cliché situation. Although Redford received a lion's share of criticism for his too-American performance, Streep has rarely been better, and the film's perfectly measured pace is complemented by David Watkin's stunning location photography. The movie was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won 7, including Best Picture, Best Director for Sydney Pollack, Best Adapted Screenplay for Kurt Luedtke, and Best Cinematography for Watkin. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Awaiting the improved transfer to be released 2012

This review is for the 2010 release of the film I purchased from BestBuy, which comes on on a double-sided disc, with the blu-ray version on one side, the DVD on the other. Although the blu-ray version is clearly an upgrade from the DVD, the transfer is definitely a disappointment compared to other catalog titles, especially considering the wonderful scenery incorporated into this film (do not expect Planet Earth-type visuals; the video quality here is significantly inferior). Universal is releasing a remastered/restored version of Out of Africa in March 2012 as part of their 100th Anniversary series. Hopefully, it will show much better the second time around. As it stands, the prior releases requires low expectations.

This blu-ray was dumped into the market with no attention to quality. And now, adding insult to injury, Universal has remastered this film properly and released a completely new version with far better video and audio quality. So all we customers who bought this "older" release of "Out Of Africa" (less than 2 years ago) are hosed! Stay away from this version of the blu-ray. Tell Best Buy to ship them all back to Universal. Insist on the 100th Anniversary remastered version!

First I must mention that the blu ray version has incredible extra features. I had not realized that besides this being an autobiographical novel-to-film, the author (played by Meryl Streep) also wrote "Babette's Feast" which received the best Foreign Film Oscar when it was released. Color, sound, picture, acting, script, etc is all top notch !

In my opinion the restored blue ray is the next best thing to being in the theatre. The natural beauty of Africa & the various animals shine brightly. Colors are natural and contrast good. Fine film grain is proof the restored film did not get DNR to death. First class restoration.

It was a gift. I took a friend to lunch and she learned that I hadn't seen it. With her thank-you note, she included money to buy the DVD. The music and scenery are beautiful; Streep is marvelous.

Bought this as a Valentines gift for my wife...(her favorite flick). Watching an older film on a 4k TV and 4K Blueray player is like watching it in the theater but only better.

One of my all time movies with a haunting love story, the great musical score sends me somewhere only the music of Lawrence Of Arabia or Doctor Zhivago takes me. Unbelievable Film!!!
