    Delightful new directions

With Gary Louris back in the lead of this band, the music soars in a few new directions hinted at in the past---there's some psychedelia, some electronica, some prog-all of these things added as window dressing to a number of classic-sounding Jayhawks pop songs. All of them unique, the songs have a very tight, worked-out arrangement. Some big names assisting in the production add further polish, but the songs really stand on their own. On top of it all is Gary Louris' familiar, wonderful high tenor, and as ever, terrific harmony singing behind it. Any Jayhawks fan will enjoy this set.

A solid attempt at the status quo. Familiar in warmth and quality, the only drawback seems that the production quality seems not as lush as earlier efforts. Nowhere as lacking as Mockingbird Time. This album provides all that rootsy country flavored goodness that has been a staple of this band for the past couple of decades.

I absolutely am in love with this cd. I've played it more than any other this year and it's just fabulous. "Pretty Roses in Your Hair" is just beautiful and I ljust ove "Isabel's daughter", "The Devil is in her Eyes", "The Dust of Long-Dead Stars", "Lies in Black & White", "Lovers of the Sun", Quiet Corners & Empty Spaces" . So many great songs on one cd. They don't make them like this one anymore

Good stuff from Louris and Co. Missing Olson, but Louris has shined without him in the past, and this may (I said, may, as time will tell) be the best Jayhawks album since Rainy Day Music, but still not at that level. Louris is an underrated songwriter who ranks up their with the greats, and a guitar innovator, so don't skip this album.

My favorite Jayhawks records have always had a Byrds-like quality and sound. I am happy to report that their latest captures this sound well and is enjoyable from beginning to end. The vocals and guitar work by Gary Louris is fine as always, and added contributions come from Peter Buck and MIke Mills.

Another great lonesome sound mostly lead by Gary Louris. The songwriting is adventurous and inspiring. Quiet Corners is a great song with other on this disc as well. Peter Buck as usual does an excellent job producing. If you are a jayhawks fan this is a must have.

This album in some ways is a departure for the Jayhawks. There were maybe one or two songs that I didn't enjoy as well as others, but the rest of the album was a very welcome return by the Jayhawks, and I applaud them for stretching their wings.

I would give this album 7 stars if I could. Gary Louris found the perfect combination of musicians, producers and songs to convey the Jayhawkian vision of contemporary America. Bravo !
