As I get older, I am enjoying history more. I had started learning about the Civil War and my interests grew. My father was in the 3rd Armored Division during WWII but he would not talk about it much but did talk when pressed when I was younger. Today I am glad I had spent the time talking to him because I lost him 15 years ago and I would have no information about him other than the little I could get from the government. I am finding that the few WWII veterans left seem to be talking more and I have a few who have told me interesting things. I doubted the scene where Patton was directing traffic but I was talking to a friend whose father was a tank commander and he recently told him about the crazy general directing traffic so his tanks could keep moving. I had seen this at the movies when it first came out and had not seen it for years. My wife had never seen it so we picked up this movie so she could see it. She enjoyed it also.

    Must-Own Blu Ray

Here is an excellent film with great acting and beautiful cinematography. It is a classic movie that is wonderfully restored in 1080p. The image quality is spectacular, even for being 40+ years old.. The audio contains a hissing sound which continually runs through the movie. It can only be noticed during diologue driven scenes (which is much of the movie). It is a little distracting but can be overlooked easily. Fortunately, the action scenes are loud and detailed. This is a must own if you like the movie, or if you want to boast your Blu Ray's HD glory. P.S. The 40th Anniversary Edition carries the same video and audio, it just includes a DigiBook and is more expensive. This standard edition (which I just reviewed) is just as good. I would recommend the Anniversary Edition to anyone who really wants it, or is a diehard fan of the movie.

Yes, this film is long, but George C. Scott delivers such a grand performance as Patton you can't take your eyes off the man. At times, the man appears totally off his rocker, but that only adds to the depth and dynamic of the whole movie. In the scene when the war ends Patton says "All good things must come to an end". I mean who else could get away with in saying that? Seriously, this isn't even a war movie. It's a character study. It's basically the George C. Scott show from first scene to last. And he owns every single frame of every single minute of this movie! You'll rarely find a cinema badass like George C.Scott's Patton. I can't imagine anyone in 1970 who was more deserving of the Oscar than George C.

Great Character Study of Legendary General

    backrowreviews

Co-written by Francis Ford Coppola, this 1969 biography of the man many consider to be the best American general ever is a fascinating and often thoughtful portrayal. Patton frequently got in trouble for shooting his mouth off, but there was no denying his effectiveness in World War II, apparently taking more ground faster than any other general in history. Don't think that means you have to be a bloody-minded hawk to enjoy this film, though. George C. Scott makes Patton such an incredibly interesting man, flaws and all, that he's sometimes simultaneously appalling in his love of war itself and yet sympathetic as a tragic figure who can't imagine life during peacetime. Very highly recommended!

A masterful loving restoration has been given to this version of "Patton" after the fallout of the very first blu-ray release being lambasted for it's liberal use of DNR filtering that destroyed all detail Fox comes back with a near perfect 2nd Generation blu-ray that offers near perfect visuals with dazzling colors accompanied by super high definition. Audio on the other hand has a distinct hiss that can be heard during dialog scenes that blemishes an otherwise excellent sounding audio track. I highly recommend this 2-disc version of "Patton" and at this price you cannot go wrong!

I am a huge fan of Patton. I was barely alive when the Vietnam conflict ended, so I don''t know anything about WWII other than what I have read in books. That being said, this movie seems to depict it very well. Without all the intense action scenes of a Saving Private Ryan, for example (and because of when it was made, that would have been too much) it more than makes up for with superb acting and strategy. Great starter for anyone wanting to learn more about WWII and a fan of classic war movies.

First off, Patton will always be a classic. Well acted and superb locations, and has the perfect balance of a war movie along with the real dynamic relationships of these great tacticians (on both sides). The extras disc is great too. Has a very good, lengthy documentary on the actual Patton. Lots of never before seen (by me) footage of the man (and others).

Patton actually had a high pitched voice but ever since I first saw this movie, at a drive in no less, with my mother in charge of the event I cannot ever get over the enormity that was WWII and all the things which could have led to our demise. The world of allies at that time, men, women and children, all playing their part, saved the earth's people, "Mostly" from a truly dark future. Learn the history and the movie becomes an excellent theatrical portrayal of this man.
