Good Movie But Doesn't Follow the Story

First, I know a lot of people love this movie because it's POTC and that's fine. However, as a real fan of the franchise, I noticed HUGE holes in the story that make it hard to watch. The most glaring hole is how Jack came by the compass. In Dead Man's Chest, Tia Dalma clearly indicated that Jack bartered the compass from her. The second plot hole is what makes you want to root for Jack to win. In this movie it seems like he's a loser... He didn't seem like Jack Sparrow at all. Lastly, Will Turner was doing the task as assigned to him by the goddess of the sea Calypso. In Dead Man's Chest it was revealed that Davy Jones only turned into the creature he eventually became because he didn't perform the task of ferrying those who died at sea to the afterlife. There is no way Will would have been subjected to the same fate since he was obviously doing the job. With a few substitutions, this movie could just as easily been called Dead Men Tell No Tales and not been a POTC adventure. Conversely, the movie could have been a fantastic POTC adventure if they had a decent continuity person (or me as a consultant!) to stick to canon instead of making up two or three new versions of the events from previous movies. Gore Verbinski, where be ye? Still, watchable and enjoyable though.

For anyone new to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, here is a list of all the movies in order of release: 1. Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl 2. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest 3. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End 4. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides 5. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales I would say that the first installment is the best of the bunch, the others not nearly as much. I did enjoy the fifth installment when I saw it in the theaters, but that may be a matter of preference. So the first and the fifth were the strong points of the franchise for me, and that was enough to make me purchase the in-between films just to round out the collection and revisit the stories. Overall, the series isn't bad, but if it can be helped, wait for the 2nd-5th films to go on clearance before purchasing - which they are now, except for the 5th (which was just recently released). The first one is well worth even at full price. Best Buy is the best place to get these because they have all the films readily available.

New writers bring change and the familiar

As a fan of the series, especially the original three entries, Dead Men Tell No Tales is a bit hard to review. If you simply want to turn off your brain and be entertained by more Captain Jack Sparrow hijinks then this will satisfy that urge. But if you're looking for a solid continuation that respects its predecessors but forges its own path, then that's a problem. Disney kicked out the writers from the last four movies and brought in new writers who either couldn't care less about the established lore and continuity, or simply ignored them. While it results in something a bit fresher thanks to Javier Bardem's casting, there's also a ton of retread to familiar elements that pay homage to what came before. My suggestion is to enjoy the eye candy visuals, the over the top action, and revisiting fan favorites (however brief), and have a good time watching a summer blockbuster.

This is the shortest of the 5 Pirates of the Caribbean movies if I'm not mistaken, but it is still full of action, adventure, and comedy. This one also has a few tearjerker moments, although I won't go into any detail to avoid posting spoilers. I will say that you get to see the more human side of some of the key characters that you hadn't seen in prior movies. There are also some new characters including the son of Will Turner and Elizabeth Swan. The plot of the movie is that everyone is trying to get the trident, which controls the sea and has the potential to undo all curses. So of course each character has his/her own personal reasons for wanting the trident. I really enjoyed the movie and will likely watch it again and again.

This is a great addition to the series Pirates of the Caribbean. All the movies with good starting with a Curse of the Black Pearl the others were okay but not since Curse of the Black Pearl has another movie stepped up like Dead Men Tell No Tales. This one picks up with Curse of the Black Pearl left off fantastic movie great stunts great action and a few surprises along the way excellent addition to anybody who owns the series Pirates of the Caribbean. I highly recommend it if you're Pirates of the Caribbean fan like I am get it you won't be disappointed.

Enjoyed the movie, but it's better in 3D than 4K

I really enjoyed this movie, I think it is better than the last Pirates movie. The special effects were great as well. However, the 4K disc just doesn't look as good visually as the 3D disc (which I had to import). Unfortunately, Disney, like some of the other companies, are in the habit of releasing 3D discs almost every where in the world except for the US. This is causing those of us in the US that enjoy 3D to miss out on some beautiful 3D releases, unless you are willing to import. If you have no choice, go with the 4K. But if you have 3D capabilities and are willing to import, it is worth the effort to do so.

I loved the original pirates movies... 1,2,3... nicely started with jack in a dingy and ended the same way. Then they decided to do a fourth and it was just ok... now the fifth. It was beautifully filmed and the effects are great but the sparkle is gone. Johnny Depp was so good but now you can't stop thinking "oh, that's just johnny Depp again". 4k video is great, $15 was a terrific price as the theater would have cost much more. Parts 4 and 5 should have been tv specials. That being said... you can have fun watching this one and I don't think you should avoid it based on my review.

The fifth in the series of Pirates of the Caribbean films - "Dead Men tell No Tales" stars Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow. In this film deadly ghost sailors led by his old nemesis, the evil Capt. Salazar, escape from the Devil's Triangle. Jack's only hope to survive lies in seeking out the Trident of Poseidon. To find the Trident, he must forge an alliance with a brilliant and beautiful astronomer Carina (Kaya Scodelario) and a young British navy man. The Blu-ray video is exceptional and the audio is presented in lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1
