    Synopsis

    Planet of the Apes
Originally intended as a project for Blake Edwards, the film version of Pierre Boule's semisatiric sci-fi novel came to the screen in 1968 under the directorial guidance of Franklin J. Schaffner. Charlton Heston is George Taylor, one of several astronauts on a long space mission whose spaceship crash-lands on a remote planet, seemingly devoid of intelligent life. Soon the astronaut learns that this planet is ruled by a race of talking, thinking, reasoning apes who hold court over a complex, multilayered civilization. In this topsy-turvy society, the human beings are grunting, inarticulate primates, penned-up like animals. When ape leader Dr. Zaius (Maurice Evans) discovers that the captive Taylor has the power of speech, he reacts in horror and insists that the astronaut be killed. But sympathetic ape scientists Cornelius (Roddy McDowell) and Dr. Zira (Kim Hunter) risk their lives to protect Taylor -- and to discover the secret of their planet's history that Dr. Zaius and his minions guard so jealously. In the end, it is Taylor who stumbles on the truth about the Planet of the Apes: "Damn you! Damn you! Goddamn you all to hell!" Scripted by Rod Serling and Michael Wilson (a former blacklistee who previously adapted another Pierre Boule novel, Bridge on the River Kwai), Planet of the Apes has gone on to be an all-time sci-fi (and/or camp) classic. It won a special Academy Award for John Chambers's convincing (and, from all accounts, excruciatingly uncomfortable) simian makeup. It spawned four successful sequels, as well as two TV series, one live-action and one animated. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

I would like to let any readers know that this is not a completely new transfer for the 50th anniversary. It is the same as has been around for 10 years. The good news is that the transfer is still fantastic for being 10 years old and for a movie of that age. The special features are plentiful and interesting for fans of the film. If the price is right, this is one of those classic films that I would even suggest for somebody who'd never seen it.

...It was a revelation. The makeup was featured in a variety of magazines (remember those?) and even now it still looks good. Oh, I know...CGI. No thanks. It has it's place but this film, with Charlton Heston is still fantastic and the sets, makeup and cast all hold up well with the passing of five + decades. Worth the price of admission, especially since you will own it and can watch it when you want to. No buffering. No download. No waiting. No kidding.

An astronaut crew crash lands on a planet in the distant future where intelligent talking apes are the dominant species, and humans are the oppressed and enslaved. But there's a deep hidden secret that only a few of the apes are aware of. Some spectacular footage, & not to spoil it for you in case you haven't seen the movie, but the scene along the coast will have you in awe and thinking !! Marvelous cast includes Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowall, Kim Hunter, James Whitmore. A must see movie that will have you wondering.....what if ??

I fell in love with this movie the first time I saw it back on TV, so glad when it got released on Blu Ray. This movie is way better than any of the other Planet of the Apes movies made recently. Despite not having the technological advancements in cinematography, for a movie from 1968 it is well acted, the costumes were awesome and plot was outstanding. You just can't capture the greatness of this movie, no matter how many times you try to remake it. If you have seen the remakes, you owe it to yourself to check what started it all.

What's to say that hasn't already been said about this classic. The new ape films do not replace it but is a great companion piece to them. Without Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowall, and Maurice Evans the story and prosthetics would have no soul. The special features are a nice bonus for anyone looking into how this strange film came about in the late 1960's. The full HD presentation brings this world to life nicely.

This is a great release of the original classic however be warned, this is the same blu-ray that has been released since 2008. The features are the same and it comes with the 2014 cover. The only update to this version is the slipcover. Regardless, this is a must own blu-ray version of this classic if you dont own it already.

The quality of the transfer to DVD was very good. The story line of this movie was well advanced at the time it was produced. The special effect are limited, but for the time they were made, they were very good. This, the original Planet of the Apes is superior to the more recent remakes of the movie.

See the first move that started it all, even the recent 'continuations' in the series. Hopefully you've never been spoiled about the ending so it's well worth the time if you're a sci-fi fan or want to see Charlton Heston over-act a bit. Fun Fact: this film received an Osacr for the makeup and costumes
