    Synopsis

    Predator
Dutch (Arnold Schwarzenegger) has a code of honor which he will not violate, even when his life depends on it. Paradoxically, his code of honor gives him the backbone to survive as a military special forces operative when he is sent on a covert mission to rescue another group which was sent in to assist some nefarious U.S. government plan in a Latin American country. Once there, he encounters an old army buddy (Carl Weathers) who has gotten too deep in the CIA's good graces for Dutch's comfort. When he and his team go into the jungle to rescue the others, they get involved in a pitched battle with local guerillas, but they are more than capable of besting these vicious fighters. However, not long after that, they encounter signs that the equally capable men they were sent to rescue were all killed unawares and in an unusually gruesome fashion. Given their training, it should have been impossible for anyone to best all of these commando warriors. Soon, the men from Dutch's own team get picked off one by one, as they grow aware that they are up against something uncanny, not of this world, something that is hunting them for sport. Why? Because their skills make them worthy opponents for the perfectly camouflaged Predator. This carefully paced action movie was given poor reviews by many movie critics, but was sufficiently satisfying for its (largely male) audiences that a successful sequel (Predator 2) was released in 1990. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

5 star movie, 3 star dip for "Art Edition"

Essentially, this is similar to my Alien review, and will attempt to attach the image of the "collector's art edition" I purchased. This review will show up on the "Ultimate Hunter's Edition" version of Predator on blu ray, because that's truly what this disc is, despite the "art" title. Picked up this art variant for a great price at $7.99, and was pretty excited. I have a collection of Alien/ Aliens and Predator movies and memorabilia, and when I saw both Alien and Predator were given an art variant, I, like the obsessed lemming I am when it comes to these movies, ran off and grabbed them. I understood that beyond the art, especially at the sale pricing, it was simply an art change- I wouldn't be getting anything extra from the discs themselves, and that I was fine with. I was however, expecting a bit more care with the actual art included. The art itself is printed on a thin piece of cardboard, then applied to the front of the regular blu ray with a dab of stickem directly in the center of the case. This stickem, in both cases, was not enough to keep the cardboard attached to the case for either movie. The cardboard itself, while nice stock, is cut in such a way that it can only be applied to the outside of the case- it cannot be inserted into the blu ray, either to replace the wraparound or even lust in front of the disc- so without the stickem holding it in place, you'll need to find another method on your own. In my case, I used a dab of super glue on each corner, which unfortunately, discolors the white parts of the cardboard, even from behind. Now, if you don't own Predator, there's no reason not to grab this if you come across it- if you don't care about the art, you can trash it, frame it, or just hang it on a wall. But, being promoted as an art variant/ collector's version, this is being geared towards the collector like myself who probably already owns the movie, or is going to display it somehow. If this applies to you, make sure you understand that you'll need to put a touch of effort into it if you're going to be displaying it- Fox may have produced some nice art for the movies with these new covers, but they didn't properly adhere them to the cases. It's a shame, because they did do a limited edition art variant of Alien for Comic-Con 2014 that I ordered, and for that, they took the time to actually print the new art onto a new wraparound insert for the blu ray. Overall, the art is nice, the movie is great, it's just difficult to recommend this unless you're a die-hard or don't already own the movie. It truly feels as if Fox had a ton of extra copies of these movies already laying around that they couldn't unload to retailers, to they slapped on these pieces of cardboard with new art, then sold them to retailers under the "Collector's Art Edition" banner. If you do grab it, just be prepared to either use the art elsewhere or find a way to stick it to the case somehow- at the sale price of $7.99 I wasn't overly dissatisfied, but if I had paid more, I may have been a little miffed. Please also be aware that unlike the Alien art variant, Predator does NOT come with a digital HD copy of the movie.

Predator has had a fairly problematic release on Blu-ray—repeatedly. The first Blu-ray release was plagued by a low bitrate and the even then older MPEG-2 compression codec. A little over two years later the so-called Ultimate Hunter Edition appeared (which my colleague Casey Broadwater covered in his Predator Blu-ray review), which significantly brightened the image as well as more than significantly upped the bitrate, now encoded via AVC, but then pretty much threw it all away by slathering the release with DNR. Though I have no conclusive information (something exacerbated by Fox's perhaps telling tight lipped stance regarding this release), it looks to me that this is simply the Ultimate Hunter Edition, slightly opened up to a 1.78:1 aspect ratio (encoded via AVC for its 2D edition and MVC for its 3D edition). All of the issues mentioned in review are still more than noticeable. The look of the image here is now much more consistent with HD video than film—it's certainly (relatively) bright (more about that below) and colorful, but there's virtually no grain to be seen anywhere in either the 2D or 3D rendering. Even in filtered scenes (like the red hued scene shown in screenshot 7), where one would expect to see lots of grain, there simply isn't any. I refer you to Casey's review linked above for a thorough analysis of the look of the film. In terms of the 3D experience, things are at least relatively better, though perhaps only incrementally. There's still next to no grain to be found, but the dimensionality here is rather striking at times, at least when compared to other recent post-conversion efforts like I, Robot. A lot of the film has not been post-converted at all, however. Simply removing your 3D glasses at various spots throughout the film show that there is no post-conversion whatsoever going on during various swaths of the film, and in fact sequences like the opening spaceship moments and the underlying images behind the credits roll have very little depth (the credits in fact are the most "dimensional" thing about the opening several minutes of the film, clearly standing out in the foreground, while the rest of the action plays out in a largely flat plane in the background).

Predator has always been a bit disappointing has it has not ben given a true collector's edition with tons of extra features and commentary this fantastically popular film deserves. It had been very confusing to me why there had not been any deluxe and limited edition versions of this incredible classic released after all these years...Well as this movie was never filmed or re-released theatrically in 3D, to see this at Best Buy, I was very surprised and immediately purchased it as I am fan of 3D. I own a Panasonic Plasma 50" Smart Vierra Active 3D Television I purchased from Best Buy about two years ago right when Panasonic announced they would stop producing Plasma sets, much to my disappointment as I feel for a bedroom tv mostly viewed in the dark you still cannot beat Plasma for 3D films...I have not seen enough on my Sony 4K Passive 3D 60" television yet to comment on the difference..Also there is almost none to very little content out that is BOTH 4K and 3D capable yet on disc...This was the first dvd I have watched that as I said was "Doctored" or converted into a 3D version never having been filmed with that intention. With that being said, you obviously lose out on the, (whether you like these or not is also important) 3D Jump out Factor Scenes that are present in the majority of movies released in 3D (Final Destination, Piranha 3DD, etc), yet the film still does a god job of making you forget it is a 3D conversion despite missing these "moments", which I personally look for in a 3D film. The transfer is absolutely crisp for a late 1980's film and the dense jungle layers do "pop" in the three dimensional space as well as the scenes with the thermographic sensor when the Predator is stalking the soldiers from his POV...Overall, a great disc and the price at Best Buy under 20 dollars you can't beat...Pick up a copy is my advice if you have a 3D setup-it make an already great action/Sci-fi movie even better and the extras while not much is new-are more than enough to please the hardcore fan like myself...

This is the 3rd 3D movie that I have watched on our 3D tv. So, I'm no 3D expert at all..! I'm only going to talk about my 3D experience, since I assume that most people have already seen this movie. 1st, if you like this movie and you like 3D, you can't go wrong buying this movie. When you start the movie, the press Play bar looks like it's about 3 or 4 feet into my living room. Most of the 3D to me, looks like it starts at the front of my tv, and goes back (deep) about 3 or 4 feet into my tv. But one scene, objects appeared to be flying out at me so realistic, that actually moved my head so not to get hit. The Predator looks really impressive in 3D. I love this movie, and now I love 3D, so I'm happy I got it. I watched this 3D movie with the following equipment. Samsung TV 60" Model UN60JU7090FXZA / Samsung-Compatible 3ACTIVE 3D Glasses Rechargeable Twin Pack / LG-UP875 4K Ultra HD 3D Blu-Ray Player Black. NOTE, the LG Blu-Ray Player was on sale last week at Best Buy for $79.99. I bought a spare at the price. Thank you for reading my review..!

This early Schwarzenegger's attempt into the action movie genre is O.K. to watch, but his later movies are undoubtedly much more exciting as his experience in movie making gets much improved . This movie is still somewhat entertaining but since it is mostly shot under the dim lighting conditions of a jungle environment it is more helpful to watch this movie in the Blu ray 2D format where it is possible to adjust the brightness level and other viewing conditions to improve your viewing pleasure for the details shown under these dim lighting conditions. In the 3D mode where the lighting conditions are set by your TV manufacturer's technical abilities it is fixed, and therefore you can not adjust the brightness or clarity of the image. So, when you have a movie that lacks the proper lighting to make things stand out in the dark, the effects of 3D are really not coming forward enough since you have no way of properly judging the depth of the environment you are in. This movie is very marginal in that perspective. So when you are thinking of purchasing this flick to add something to your newly acquired 3D movie collection, as I did, you are wasting your money. I have older releases of this movie, including also one on laser disc, I believe, that are just as good to watch as this release in 2D. Although the Blu ray quality is a small improvement, not very much, it is not worth spending extra money on THIS set if you already have it.

      4K Review

Alright, so the movie is downright awesome! We all know this, I’m simply reviewing the 4K Ultra HD version of Predator. This was a much needed improvement over the blu-ray edition that had been released and that unfortunately accompanies this copy as well. The Blu-ray edition looked as if the characters were fake and just didn’t look right. It was weird looking. The 4K highly improves on this with better looking quality with retaining the grain from a 31 year old film. It’s not supposed to look like it came out this year and I am loving the look! Seeing the small details throughout the forest, the characters faces, predator vision and heck, even the sweat on their face lol. For those fans of an amazing Arnie flick or just a fan of Predator l, snag this up now! The transfer we all definitely deserve!

This is a great action movie. Exciting and suspenseful. In this movie, Arnold Schwarzeneggar plays the leader of a special forces unit sent to rescue VIPs captured by Central american rebels. They are then hunted down by an invisible alien (the 'Predator'). The action sequences are fast paced and explosive, making for some exciting viewing. I loved the visual effects for the Predator's stealth field. There's a cool rippling effect so you can almost see him but not quite. The Predator himself looks very cool and very scary, one of the best alien/monster make-ups I've ever seen. The late, great Stan Winston outdid himself with the creature designs in this movie. There's also Schwarzennegar's trademark oneliners ('If it bleeds we can kill it.'). Lots of action, great visuals, some nice oneliners makes for the perfect DVD if you just want to kick back and watch a fun movie. The second disc has lots of extras on the production of the movie. Predator does have violent scenes, but I do not consider it to be sxcessively violent. It does, however, warrant its 'R' rating.

Predator: This film from 1987 still stands the action test of time... The actors alone set up a nice suspenseful science fiction horror full of paranoia and mystery in the jungles in South America. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Carl Weathers lead a team of mercenaries into a jungle to find a lost special forces team.. Only they find that they are being hunted by a mysterious chameleon like Alien from another planet... Chaos, fear, and pure horror take place while trying to find a way out.. Great one liners and weapon action from the actors sets up a great plot and film. You want to root for the guys and get attached to the characters really fast. The special features on the Blu ray are full of hours of extras and interviews from the cast... It was a challenge to film it. The Blu ray quality is 10 times better than the DVD version.. You can see the bushes and blades of grass in the jungle really well. The quality if cleaned up and is awesome looking. One line that will stick out to me is "Get to the chopper!".
