Provacative Docs, Vol. 1 [3 Discs] [DVD]

This box set brings together three documentaries that share a desire to provoke, by delving into taboo-busting subject matter. First on the bill is 2009's American Jihadist, directed by Mark Claywell, about a Washington, D.C. native who has made a pledge to Allah, taking up arms for the poor and oppressed - and whose actions prompted the U.S. government to brand him a terrorist. Next up is Étienne Sauret's Dirty Pictures (2009), a profile of controversial chemist (and ecstasy creator) Dr. Alexander "Sasha" Shulgin. Finally, Adam Barter's Mind of the Demon: The Larry Linkogle Story profiles death-defying motocross rider Linkogle.

American Jihadist
Isa Abdullah Ali is a devout Muslim who is classified as a "known terrorist" by the United States Defense Department and openly acknowledges he's taken up arms for "the pleasure of God by taking a stand to help the ill treated and oppressed." But Ali is not from Iraq or Afghanistan -- he was born Calvin Raphael Holt and grew up in the slums of Washington D.C. After converting to Islam and changing his name, Ali fought in support of what he believes is the Muslim cause in Bosnia and Lebanon, and he still speaks out in defense of his faith even after being injured a number of times in battle. But what transformed Holt into Ali, and why is he still willing to die (and to kill) for Islam? Filmmaker Mark Claywell explores the life and time of Ali and lets him speak for himself about his beliefs and his actions in the documentary American Jihadist. American Jihadist won the Jury Prize for Best Documentary at the 2010 Slamdance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Mind of the Demon: The Larry Linkogle Story
Larry Linkogle became fascinated with motorcycles when he was a boy and starting riding in professional motocross events when he was just 15. But it didn't take long for Linkogle to become disenchanted with the status quo of motocross, and with the help of a handful of friends he quit the traditional motocross circuit and created something wilder and more radical -- freestyle motocross, which combined the acrobatics of surfing and skateboarding with the speed and power of motorcycles. Linkogle quickly became a star in the sport he devised, but he also learned first hand about its dangers -- a bad fall cost him his spleen, and when he was hired to do motorcycle stunts for the movie XXX, he collided with a helicopter blade that penetrated through his skull into the frontal lobe of his brain. Remarkably, Linkogle survived, but the many rounds of surgery and medical treatments left him with an addiction to painkillers that threatened to finish him off. Filmmaker Adam Barker offers a no-hold-barred portrait of a rebel determined to follow his own path whatever the cost in the documentary Mind of the Demon: The Larry Linkogle Story, which includes extensive interviews with Linkogle and his compatriots, as well as footage of him in action. Narrated by Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead, Mind of the Demon was an official selection at the 2010 Slamdance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Dirty Pictures
Director Étienne Sauret presents the remarkable story of Dr. Alexander "Sasha" Shulgin, aka the Godfather of Psychedelics. Hailed by some as one of the most visionary chemists of the modern era, Dr. Shulgin is the man responsible for the creation of over 200 psychedelic drugs, including ecstasy. Despite frequent clashes with the law, the renegade experimenter continues his lifelong quest to communicate with his own mind in ways that most will never experience, frequently testing his creations with his devoted wife, Ann. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
