Hi oldkitty! I bought my phone at a Best Buy. I only paid $19.99 + tax for the phone. Plus, another $19.99 for 60 minutes. There was no activation fee that I am aware of. Best Buy took care of initial connection. You will have to go to the TracFone.com site to complete activation. Suprise! They gave me extra airtime. Pretty cool of them. You will have to use a card to purchase the phone and airtime(unless you use cash at time of purchase. Remember, I bought my intitial phone and airtime at Best Buy. They are very helpful. As for future additions to airtime, I will use a card at TracFone site. I did not investigate if you can add airtime by purchasing a airtime card for this phone.
