It can work with wifi and will detect a wifi signal automatically, if you set up that feature on the phone. That does not require a data plan. But if you want to access the internet where there is no wifi signal, you DO need a data plan. I've found it to act exactly like a PC, when you lose your internet connection, what you were viewing is still there on the screen, but you can't go elsewhere, or update the video etc, until a connection is restored. If you were using the wifi feature, and suddenly lose the signal, but also have a data plan, they phone will automatically switch to cell data for internet use.
