It can only by used if the iPad has the newer, smaller, lightning cable. It won't work on the first few generations of iPad.

For the older kind it is the 30 pin which the head of the charge is a lot bigger and you have to squeeze both side of the cable so in can go in the device.

Not sure adapter end has been changed this past year or not (like for iPhone 8 or X models), but the older products have a larger end and the latter, like iPod 3rd gen. and iPhone 5, have smaller end.
