For the battery doorbell, the connection is that the wifi chime connects with the router via wifi, then the doorbell can connect with the wifi chime via their own signal. Normally, in theory, the Wi-Fi Doorbell Chime can be 15-25ft from the WI-Fi router. The actual range will vary depending on a number of factors such as the thickness of walls, obstacles inside the house, and the location of the router. Thus, the doorbell is connecting with the wifi chime rather than connecting with wifi directly.

When setting it up, you want the chime to be right in-between the router and the doorbell for maximum efficiency. Do a download/upload teat near an outlet in-between your router and your door and that's a decent expectation of what the doorbell will recieve.
