It has a core i3 processor that does have a cooling fan, unlike a lot of other Chromebook models which use fanless core M or celeron processors. So far the fan is the one thing I haven't been thrilled with on this computer. It's not terribly loud, and it doesn't run all the time, but it also doesn't take very long of using the computer for the fan to come on. Like I said, it's not all that loud, so really this has been a minor inconvenience rather than a dealbreaker, although that's definitely more of a personal preference thing. Overall I've been really pleased with this model- the core i3-8130u is crazy fast (faster than the fanless models used on most Chromebooks- that's the trade-off!), and this model might have the nicest trackpad and keyboard I've ever used on a laptop, period.
All these answers apply to the older White model. None of them refer to the brand new 2020 Mineral Silver model. My friend just bought the newer one of these, and it is wicked quiet.
I can't believe the folks whining about the fan. It is barely audible. And I put this machine to work for long periods in my lap - barely gets warm. IMHO, the fan is a non issue.
As stated by others - the Core i3 used in this model does require a fan. It does kick on quite often. It is a very low, shrill high pitched sound. I don't find it annoying at all, but if you really think it could be an issue for you - I would go to a local BB store if you have one around and play around with the floor unit. Running Octane Benchmark on it should kick the fan on so you can judge yourself.
Yes, it has a fan. It's not loud. I did notice the first time is turned on, but it's quite enough that I am certain I won't always notice it.
While the fan can kick on from time to time, it is due to the processor being superior to those of the fanless line. The more the CPU needs to process, the more likely it will need to kick on. Overall the laptop is silent and the amount of time the fan is on is minimal. I would imagine if one is running netflix on one monitor and youtube on their screen that the fan may be one constantly, but even with that the fan is pretty quiet.
We absolutely love our HP Chromebook! It does everything we need and more.
I'm on spotify for youtube most of the time so I don't even know the fan was running.
I am actually quite surprised by this. I've had mine for about two weeks and was also expecting with 8gm of RAM that it could handle a lot. So then I'm even more surprised when I only have 2 Chrome tabs open, I open up another (with no Android apps running in the background) and the fan kicks on! How is that possible? In any case, like other answers have said, it is indeed super fast and the overall hardware is amazing, but this fan seems strange. It is not so loud, but very high-pitched.
I had to return this chromebook because I HATE the fan noise. It really bothers me when I am concentrating. It comes on a lot!!!! Other than the fan, I really liked the unit but did decide to return it. I purchased the Asus Flip C434 chromebook instead. It does not have a fan.
