Yes it is completely covered. One of the problems with the design though is that it is difficult to use Touch ID as the home button is on the side of the ipad and the case covers it a bit.

The iPad itself fits into the top half of the shell so its edges are covered.
The keyboard is the bottom half and is the same hard plastic as the top shell.  
I haven’t dropped it, thankfully.

It does fully surround the iPad when closed. I have had this keyboard folio for about 6 weeks and have not dropped the iPad yet, but it appears to provide similar protection to other cases (non keyboard) that I have used in the past.
