Self monitoring just makes noise and alerts you. You would then call the police incase of a break in ... or You can pay 10$ a month for professional monitoring and police will roll ... its cheaper than other security systems and it has a cellular backup incase your internet goes down... basically it's always online

Professional monitoring is a service that “watches” for signals from the Ring Alarm system and can alert the authorities when a security threat is detected. Self-monitoring is when you monitor the Ring Alarm yourself. When the Alarm Base Station detects a threat, it will only send an alert to your phone and the phones of your Shared Users. This article will explain what monitoring is and help you make the best choice for your home: https://bit.ly/2tW7h9U Bilan J, Customer Satisfaction Specialist Bilan.jenkins@ring.com
