Yes, it can do this, but if you want to read in the sun you will want to get an anti-glare screen cover. Of corse the best reading experience in sunlight will be with an ereader.

The screen has adjustable brightness so it is good in sunlight. There is a lot of glare on the screen, but I think that is the same with just about every tablet out there.
