I use the device as USB 2.0 connection speeds- I don't own a computer that has USB 3.0. I did inquire when I bought this drive whether it would require some additional adapters to be used as 2.0 vs 3.0. The sales person explained that the USB connections haven't changed, it's just the hardware inside the drive case that has the capacity to push the information at the faster USB 3.0 connection speed. So, my understanding again, if you bought a external hard drive that was 2.0 but you could "upgrade" to 3.0 speeds by adding an additional base, then that additional base would do the work of chugging out the information at the 3.0 speed. All the cables and connections would be the same.
hope that helps!
