No, you do not need an HDMI cable to display HD quality programming. However, while component cables can provide HD quality programming, it will be limited to 1080i or 720p. This is not due to a limitation of the cable but a limitation of the RCA connectors. If you want to display a full 1080p picture, HDMI is the way to go.
