Quigley Down Under [DVD] [1990]

Quigley Down Under comes to this dual-layered DVD in a widescreen anamorphic picture format (1.85:1 aspect ratio) and with the following audio options: English (Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo), French (Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo), and Spanish (Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono), with subtitles available in Spanish and French. Aside from the theatrical trailers usually included in DVD transfers, however, there are no special features of any kind included. The look of the picture is of about television or VHS quality, with the usual black bars at the top and bottom of the picture given the 1.85:1 aspect ratio. Sound quality is barely stereo in places and lacks crispness, detail, and directionality; it too is of about VHS quality.

Synopsis

Quigley Down Under
Tom Selleck stars as American cowboy archetype Matthew Quigley in Simon Wincer's outback western Quigley Down Under. Answering an advertisement placed by Australian cattle baron Elliot Marston (Alan Rickman) to come to the rugged and uncivilized Australian countryside and shoot dingoes, Quigley finds himself halfway around the world, only to find that Marston wants to exploit his talents as a sharpshooter in order to wipe out the Aborigine population. Taken aback by this square-jawed genocide, Quigley grabs Marston and hurls him through a window. Marston, who controls the region, sets out to hunt Quigley down. But helping him stay one step ahead of Marston is the addlebrained expatriate American trollop Crazy Cora (Laura San Giacomo) who insists that Quigley is her husband Roy. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

    A Classic Western Movie

    Posted
    DS3

Quigley Down Under is a classical American Western movie even though it is set in Australia. It is the type of movie that you can watch many times and never get tired of it. Tom Selleck plays the quintessential hero who is an American sharpshooter lured to Australia by our protagonist Elliott Marston played so well by Alan Rickman. As Quigley arrives in this foreign land, he meets up with our heroin, Crazy Cora played by Laura San Giacomo. Their fates quickly becomes entwined and she ends up providing the comic relief for most of the film. There are several other characters all played by a fine supporting cast but there are two characters that you won't find anywhere in the credits. The first is Matthew Quigley's Shiloh Sharps .45-110 rifle. The entire story revolves around this rifle's ability to reach out and touch someone and Quigley's ability to handle such a rifle. The other character not in the credits is the outback of Australia. The scope and grandure of the scenery in this movie has to be seen because no words would be capable of accurately describing it. As great as all the other characters in this movie are, the film would not work without these last two characters. If you like Westerns then do yourself a favor and buy this movie. You won't regret it.

My husband and I enjoy watching Tom Selleck and he is outstanding in his role as Matthew Quigley. We bought the blue-ray version and the movie is as sharp as possible for the production period this movie came from. We were very pleased to have purchased this movie.
