Synopsis

Rain Man
Self-centered, avaricious Californian Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise) is informed that his long-estranged father has died. Expecting at least a portion of the elder Babbitt's $3 million estate, Charlie learns that all he's inherited is his dad's prize roses and a 1949 Buick Roadmaster. Discovering that the $3 million is being held in trust for an unidentified party, Charlie heads to his home town of Cincinnati to ascertain who that party is. It turns out that the beneficiary is Raymond Babbitt (Dustin Hoffman), the autistic-savant older brother that Charlie never knew he had. Able to memorize reams of trivia and add, subtract, multiply, and divide without a second's hesitation, Raymond is otherwise incapable of functioning as a normal human being. Aghast that Raymond is to receive his father's entire legacy, Charlie tries to cut a deal with Raymond's guardian. When this fails, Charlie "borrows" Raymond from the institution where he lives, hoping to use his brother as leverage to claim half the fortune. During their subsequent cross-country odyssey, Charlie is forced to accommodate Raymond's various autistic idiosyncracies, not the least of which is his insistence on adhering to a rigid daily schedule: he must, for example, watch People's Court and Jeopardy every day at the same time, no matter what. On hitting Las Vegas, Charlie hopes to harness Raymond's finely-honed mathematical skills to win big at the gaming tables; but this exploitation of his brother's affliction compels Charlie to reassess his own values, or lack thereof. A longtime pet project of star Dustin Hoffman, Rain Man was turned down by several high-profile directors before Barry Levinson took on the challenge of bringing Ronald Bass' screenplay to fruition (Levinson also appears in the film as a psychiatrist). All three men won Oscars, and the movie won Best Picture. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

If you don't know what this movie is about, then you must be living under a rock. The film is about a young man (Tom Cruise) who finds out his father has died and also finds out he has an older brother who is autistic (Dustin Hoffman in his second Oscar-winning performance) and who kidnaps his brother so he can collect a $3 million inheritance but bonds with him in the process. Classic movie, worthy of the 4 Oscars it won (Best Picture, Director Barry Levinson, Best Actor and Original Screenplay) and then some. Yes, some of it has aged poorly and the subplot of Charlie's car business potentially going under totally pushed in the background of unimportance, but still is a great film and will stand the test of time. The PQ, which is a 4K transfer, is simply marvelous, with great sharpness and colors on my 1080p screen. The audio quality isn't the best, which is representative of the 80s but everything is heard fine and dandy with Hans Zimmer's Oscar-nominated score and the great soundtrack benefiting the most from the DTS-HD soundtrack. The extras are mostly recycled from the older BluRay and DVD releases with three commentaries a deleted scene, but also includes two featurettes about the making-of the film and about the man whom Dustin Hoffman based his performance on. All around, a great disc worth owning just not showing off your home theatre system.

"Rain Man" is one of the weaker Best Picture Oscar winners. Not to say, it's bad, it is a very good film. Just not Oscar-caliber. It's a touching story of two brothers, one of whom didn't know the other existed until their father died. It starts out as a search for monetary wealth. But what is eventually found turns out to be much more valuable. Dustin Hoffman's performance has become one of the most imitated movie characters since Bogart in "Casablanca" or Brando in "The Godfather". Tom Cruise, though he always tries to be convincing as a different character , still comes across as Tom Cruise. As for the blu-ray itself, it's excellent. Very lifelike imagery and surround sound.

Can't say much about the film that hasn't already been said. An absolute classic and still a great watch after all these years. Cruise & Hoffman = magnifique. Both the video & audio quality are way above average for a catalog title. This 25th anniversary edition also has solid extras. MGM did a great job with the transfer of this film the 2nd time around after the 2011 blu ray release was in my opinion lacking. Loving having this title in my collection.

This is the remastered version and the one to own. Classic underrated Tom Cruise performance. Not to take anything from Dustin Hoffman, whom adds another feather to his cap of excellence, but it's easy to discount Cruise because he's a star but he does a great job in this. Great commentary Beautiful Picture. The sound is appropriate and what is expected to tell this story, this is not an action movie so don't expect a robust sound field.

Rain Man is one those movies that you knew you loved when you first saw it, then kind of just forgot about it for a while. Over time, you knew you liked it, but never thought about why. I hadn't seen Rain Man in over a decade when I bought this. After watching it again, the performances and story blew me away once again. If you haven't seen this film in a while, give it another view. You'll remember why you loved it.

This is one of the best movies of all times! Everyone I know who's seen it has enjoyed it. It's one of those movies that you want to have in your collection just in case you want to watch it one day. Cruise and Hoffman work really well together and feed off of each other the whole movie. Cruise is actually pretty funny in this movie. I would say buy this movie if you haven't seen it and buy this movie if you've seen it and absolutely love it!

Despite being made almost 30 years ago, this movie holds up so well that it remains among the best movies of all time. In an Oscar-winning role, Dustin Hoffman is terrific. But it's the underrated and stellar performance of Tom Cruise that gives this movie its lifeblood. Another huge plus: the ending is not your typical Hollywood copout. A marvelous movie on every level possible.

I don't know if I needed to upgrade my DVD copy to blu-ray, but the picture quality is definitely better and I was a big fan of the soundtrack and the music sounds great. Unfortunately I thought I bought this at $4.99 and my receipt said $14.99 -- bonehead move on my part. Anyhow, it's a great movie so I'm glad I can enjoy it in higher definition than before.
