Rambo: First Blood, Part 2 [Ultimate Edition] [DVD] [1985]

John Rambo is back for the third time on DVD with this Ultimate Edition of Rambo: First Blood Part II from Lion's Gate Home Entertainment. Only George P. Cosmatos' commentary has been carried over from Artisan's previous discs, though that doesn't mean that this disc isn't packed. In probably one of the most overblown bonuses since the Blair Witch 2's "The Secret of Esrever" DVD feature, Rambo has been graced with a "Survival Mode" feature that is every bit as worthless as it sounds. Using branching technology, the disc's producers have outfitted the DVD to give the viewer access to special character information, map recreations, and some rather ridiculous animations that serve no purpose other than to just be "flashy." The fact that they have chosen a name like "Survival Mode" to represent all of these features is fitting, since watching the film like this really is like a game of endurance for people with very little time on their hands. Other than the uneven group of bonus features, the 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen picture sports fine contrast and details, while the 5.1 Dolby Digital audio sports a exemplary mix that explodes with action and does a good job at transporting the viewer into the jungle setting. As far as the commentary goes, Cosmatos might be a little too technical at times, but his knowledge of the stunt work is a big bonus that keeps the track interesting throughout. When all is said and done, the disc is worth purchasing for first-time buyers of the series, but should be of no use to those who own the previous superior discs. This DVD is also available in a three-disc Collector's Set of all three Ultimate Edition discs of this blockbuster series.

Synopsis

Rambo: First Blood Part II
The dark-horse box-office hit First Blood spawned this even more successful sequel in which Sylvester Stallone, reprising his role as ex-Green Beret loner John Rambo, is extricated from prison by his former superior Colonel Trautman (Richard Crenna) for a top-secret operation to bring back POWs still held in Vietnam. Teamed up with a female Vietnamese freedom fighter (Julia Nickson), Rambo embarks on a "reconnaissance" mission. A love interest develops in the beautiful young guide -- she dies by enemy fire; he seeks revenge. Of course, there are also corrupt American officials behind the mission, and Rambo saves them for last. Over the course of the film, Rambo kills enough communist bad guys to fill the Rose Bowl, using everything from fishing line to exploding arrowheads to rocket launchers. Stallone mumbles, grunts, and groans his way through this laughable and often insulting film intended to exploit anti-communist fervor at the height of the Reagan years. ~ Jeremy Beday, Rovi

one of the things i learned in the extras was they wanted to do a buddy movie with john travolta. instead of being in jail for what he had done in first blood rambo was sent to a mental hospital where he meets the travolta character. however this idea was scrapped. trautman gets rambo to agree to a mission for a potential pardon. rambo figures he can do some good and rescue the pow's but does not know is the head of the operation played to perfection by charles napier doesn't want that to happen and rambo is left behind when he shows up at the pickup site with a pow. the best line in the movie is when rambo tells murdock [charles napier] that he is coming for him. rambo eventually accomplishes his mission but decided to stay in asia. the only thing he wants is his country to show both him and the rescued pow's some respect. it moved me to tears.

    1998 Version Still the Best

For some reason, the dvd transfers done for 'Rambo: First Blood Part II' have been pretty poor. The best version is still the original 1998 release, even with its poor bit-rate, minor color issues, and print defects. The 2002 special edition had a load of bonus features but the film itself appeared heavily over-saturated and grainy in certain scenes, and too light or too dark in others. Once again, a casualty of overdone high-def revisions. This transfer is slightly better than the 2002 release but offers no bonus features except the same commentary offered on the previous two versions, so I still recommend the 1998 release.

    Expensive Considering

Probably my all time favorite action-adventure film, this Blue-Ray transfer of 'Rambo: First Blood Part 2' presents a slightly enhanced image over the previous standard dvd incarnations. The question is whether or not it's worth $25, considering you can find the standard dvd in discount bins everywhere for $5.
