Synopsis

Real Life Teens: Self Esteem
A word of explanation may be helpful: in lieu of the reality series suggested by the title, the Real Life Teens series actually constitutes a series of documentary programs that provide down-to-earth advice and counsel for teenagers on dealing with the vicissitudes of adolescence. Each program utilizes candid, from-the-hip interviews with actual teens, speaking from the wisdom of life experience, and each incorporates adult insights. Perhaps no issue facing teens is more critical or fundamental than that of self-confidence, and the series episode entitled 'Self-Esteem' addresses this at length. It asserts the idea that poor self-esteem may be a natural by-product of aging: as adolescents' bodies change and they begin to forge a sense of personal identity for the first time, they may naturally compare themselves to others and occasionally feel inferior as a result. This, in turn, can lead to such negative by-products as social withdrawal, poor academic performance and ill-advised lifestyle choices. This program discusses all of the said factors, then moves into subtopics including the causes of self-esteem, peer pressure and the way that social factors can make us feel less worthy. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi
