A group of former government assassins fights back against the CIA after they're targeted for knowing too much in this adaptation of Warren Ellis' acclaimed DC Comics graphic novels. Frank Moses (Bruce Willis) used to be a hired gun for the CIA. Along with Joe (Morgan Freeman), Marvin (John Malkovich), and Victoria (Helen Mirren), Frank's specialty was carrying out contracts that the government didn't want the public to know about. These days, Frank and his old gang are all retired, but the powers that be are still concerned that they know too much, and dispatch a team of top assassins to ensure their silence. Now, Frank and his former team members realize that their only hope for survival is to break into CIA headquarters and expose the truth. But once they're in, the group uncovers evidence of a massive cover-up that promises to rock the very foundation of our government. Karl Urban, Brian Cox, Richard Dreyfuss, and Ernest Borgnine co-star.~Jason Buchanan

I bought the 4K UHD disk with my Sony UDP-X800 player because I wanted to see the difference between DVD, BD and BD UHD on my LG 4K tv. Surprisingly the BD and DVD looked very similar with the BD getting the edge. This is likely due to the players upconversion. This BD, however, provided a quantum leap in quality. Both saturation and resolution were remarkable. Given the choice, and the equipment, I will buy 4K UHD from now on.
Now; about the movie. This is a great vehicle for a bunch of Hollywood egos to ham it up in front of the camera. All four stars do an fantastic job but actually Hellen Mirren is the standout. I expect it is because this is a departure from her normal casting.
So as to avoid spoilers I will simply say that this is a great movie combining serious drama, personal demons, action, and some comedic reliefs. If you like action movies, you can’t go wrong with this one.
I haven't felt as good watching a movie since 2003's Pirates of the Caribbean. Unexpected lines and juxtapositions lift this tale. Okay, so the story is very improbable...not to worry given that part of the movie experience is suspending our disbelief.
Bruce Willis charms. John Malkovich is humorously irascible. Morgan Freeman gives us his usual likable best. Helen Mirren wields an assortment of guns. And Mary-Louise Parker shows us how facial expressions and muffled sounds can turn a story line and spice up a story.
There's not a single member of Willis's reunited team I wouldn't like to be around. There they are, seeking first why Bruce Willis is in the crosshairs, then why seemingly random people are getting murdered and finally bringing the evil-doers to a just end.

Great Action movie
Owned for 1.5 years when reviewed.
Frank (Bruce Willis) is retired, bored, and lonely living off of his government pension in a nondescript suburb in an equally nondescript house. The only joy in Frank's life is his calls to the government pension processing center when he gets to talk to his case worker, Sarah (Mary-Louis Parker). Sarah is as bored and lonely as Frank and marks her conversations with the unknown Frank and her spy novels as the only things fun in her life. When something in Frank's past forces him back into his old line of work and puts an unwitting Sarah in the middle of the intrigue, Frank and Sarah begin a journey into his past and the people with whom he used to work. Like Frank they are all RED
We bought the Sony UBP-X 800 4k UHD Blue Ray player and I wanted a 4k HDR disc to try.
The plot of the movie is formulaic but the acting is great if not over the top at times. The cast does a wonderful job of making us believe their characters (in my opinion Hellen Mirren steals the show). The directing takes the action way over the top bringing a comedic effect just from the number of spent shells shots. John Matkovic is great as the crazy member. Morgan Freeman brings class to the store and Bruce Willis does his usual.
What impressed me most about this movie was the 4k HDR format. OMG the video quality was freakin awsome! We did have a problem with the disc in that 11:17 into Chapter 2 freeze then skip to 12:22 repeatably. Best Buy exchanged the BD with no problem and the second was fine.
This review may be better placed as a review for the format more than the movie content. While I love the cast and story of the RED. series I wanted a disc to try with my new hb tv and Sony UHD blue rag player.
The HDR color was amazing and the native 4k resolution seemed better than real life - not a pixel to be seen! Unfortunately my elation was supplanted by disappointment when the movie started speg blocking and stuttering. A return trip to Bes + Boy for a straight-up exchange resolved the issue.
I don't know if this will be typical of the UHD HDR format but I will be returning to pick up RED. 2 for sure.
Action and high energy with the right amount of humor. Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman , John Malkovich, Mary Louise Parker and Helen Mirren are perfectly casted. This is a movie that you can watch time and time again. If you like ensemble action movies, then you will love RED (Retired Extremely Dangerous).
Opening Scene: The mundane daily routine of a retired CIA Covert Operative is exposed – it was routine. The show is most likely one of the best spy – counter spy flicks that I have seen. With a superb blend of “senior” casting, sensitive directorship, and a very well-written plot-line of pure table-pounding action/intrigue entertainment this is the type of film you will visit again, and there is a twist around every corner that is guaranteed to keep your interest up! It is interesting that the plots star character, Frank [Francis], is a pure romantic with a hard exterior but is soft and gooey on the inside.

Great cast. Plenty of action. Bruce and Morgan do it.
