Revengers Tragedy [DVD] [2002]

Repo Man and Sid and Nancy director Alex Cox may not get quite the attention today that he did while at the prime of his career in the mid-'80s, but for those in the know he's still cranking out some interesting, decidedly non-mainstream films. Though his modernized updating of 17th-century playwright Thomas Middleton's dark tale may not have received the attention it deserved stateside, Fantoma Films has still seen fit to release a surprisingly feature-packed version of the film to DVD. The feature is presented in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen and it looks great, and viewers will no doubt be excited to note the inclusion of a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack as well. Joined by popular U.K. comic/star Eddie Izzard, Cox provides audio commentary that is both absorbing and informative. The two have a great rapport, and it's obvious that they had a good time working together. In addition to a 30-minute behind-the-scenes documentary, the disc also includes a quartet of featurettes on the making of the film; a missing scene; a Cannes promo; a gallery of photos, production art, and storyboards; and excerpts from Cox's A Director's Dairy.

Revengers Tragedy
Revenge, obsession, and the morally ambiguous aristocracy are targets of this adaptation by director Alex Cox of the 17th century dark comic play Revengers Tragedy, written by Shakespeare contemporary Thomas Middleton. The vindictive and mentally unstable Vindici (Christopher Eccleston) has returned to the grimy streets of a post-apocalyptic Liverpool in order to attempt to bring ruin to the ruling family led by the Duke (Derek Jacobi). The Duke was personally responsible for the death of Vindici's fiancée ten years previously when the woman would not yield to the Duke's sexual advances. An opportunity arises for Vindici's vengeance when the Duke's youngest son is accused of raping the wife (Sophie Dahl) of Lord Antonio (Anthony Booth) -- one of the Duke's courtiers. When the Duke's son is acquitted of the rape charges, Lord Antonio's wife dies a mysterious death, which leads to even more havoc in the court of the Duke. Seizing the opportunity, Vindici acts swiftly and violently but the morality of his cause is just as questionable as the aristocracy he is ousting. Revengers Tragedy was a competing film at the 2002 Locarno Film Festival. ~ Ryan Shriver, Rovi
