    Great Remake

Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga electrify the screen in A Star Is Born from Warner Bros. Pictures. Cooper, who also directed and co-wrote the screenplay, stars as Jackson Maine, a talented but troubled musician nearing the end of his career due to his age and alcoholism. After a performance one night, Jackson decides to stop at bar for a drink, and little does Jackson know his life will change when he lays eyes on Ally (Lady Gaga). A talented singer herself with some self-esteem issues, Ally is curious as to why Jackson is showing interest in her. However, with his charm, Jackson wins Ally over. Naturally, the two fall in love, and Jackson helps Ally make it in the troublesome world of the music industry. The central plot of A Star Is Borins not a new one as this is the third remake of a 1937 classic. The story is that of a crumbling superstar whose career is beginning to crumble due to drinking finds himself when he meets a young and beautiful talent. In all honesty, the story was due for a remake; however, unlike some recent remakes, Cooper’s version gets it right. From the moment Cooper takes the stage, I immediately saw Jackson the musician and not Bradley Cooper the actor. Throughout the film, Cooper takes us on a rollercoaster of emotions with his portrayal of Jackson. In terms of his directing, as a first timer, Cooper also does a fantastic job from his shot choices during the concert sequences to the subtle moments between Jackson and Ally. While I have not heard that much of Lady Gaga’s music, I have to say she does a phenomenal job in her first lead acting role. Given Lady Gaga’s superstar status, a non-casual moviegoer may make the mistake thinking that Gaga did not need to do much acting as Ally. However, just as with Cooper’s role of Jackson, the moment Gaga appears on screen, I saw Ally and not Lady Gaga. Throughout the film we watch Ally grow from shy talented singer to global superstar. Given that A Star Is Born is a musical, the soundtrack has to come to perfection, and while I am not normally into rock or country, I found myself nodding my head during numerous moments. The song “Shallow,” which is a key component in the film marketing campaign, is without a doubt going to be nominated come awards season, while the closing number the beautiful ballad “I’ll Never Love Again” just may become one of Lady Gaga’s signature songs. The chemistry between Cooper’s Jackson and Gaga’s Ally is also one of my favorite aspects of the film. The two have a genuine love story, and I found myself rooting for the duo the entire film. In hindsight, the chemistry is so good, I did not have even notice that three of the other strong performers are given little screen time. Sam Elliott as Jackson’s brother/manager; Andrew Dice Clay as Lorenzo, Ally’s dad; and Dave Chappelle as Noodles, Jackson’s friend all shine in their limited roles. The latest version of A Star Is Born succeeds not only as a beautiful love story but also as engaging musical. While I cannot say that A Star Is Born is the best movie for me of the fall season, I do highly recommend it.

Not at all what I expected... which is great!

My wife wanted to watch this one, so we picked it up for a movie night. I have to say that I was completely blown away by the talent shown in this flick. Cooper is a great actor, and was very believable as Jack... but what really surprised me was how good Lady Gaga was in this film. I knew she was talented as a singer, but that's obviously not the limits of her abilities and she sines in this movie. Sam Elliot... what more can you say about him that hasn't already been said? As Jack's brother Bobby, he nails this role. It seemed to me that Cooper deliberately spoke in a deeper voice to try and mimic Sam Elliot's natural tone, and there is a moment in the film where you realize that this not by mistake... because Jack looked up to Bobby and (figuratively and literally) stole his voice. This movie is basically about the music industry and how 'stars' are made, but the underlying story about families, love, a sometimes cruel and imperfect world, addiction, and the rise to fame and subsequent fallout that can happen from that really hooked me. It's certainly worth the price of admission... or in this case, cost of the discs. I'm sure we'll watch this one again and again over the years.

Picked this up so my mom could see it, as she was a fan of the Streisand version, and I figured I would enjoy seeing it again too, It doesn't disappoint the second time! Fantastic singing, music, acting performances - Gaga's amazing and Cooper can really sing - and their chemistry,,,Electric. Now put all of that into the most defined and clear picture retail technology has to offer - at only $20 - and you've just made yourself one smart shopper!

A Star is Born is a “Chick Flick”, but it was better than I expected. Bradley Cooper’s and Lady Gaga’s performances were spot-on. From this movie, I gained a higher level of appreciation for Lady Gaga’s singing talent.

Accomplished musician Jackson Maine discovers/ falls for struggling musician Aly. Who is about to call it quits until Jackson invites her into the spotlight. And Aly's career soars to heights she never imagined but her and Jackson's relationship is heading in a downward spiral. I wanted to see this film because I like Lady Gaga and I am a struggling musician myself. But I never expected it to be so real feeling and heartwarming story of chance and hope.

Beautiful movie. Wonderful performances from Cooper and GaGa. . A heartbreaking story done magnificently well. This movie kind of stayed with me for a few days after watching it, and that doesn't happen too often (same thing for my husband and I've never had him comment on a movie days after seeing it-it happened with this one). Music was awesome as well.

    A Star Is Born Again

    Posted .

This is the 4th film based on the A Star Is Born story and the 3rd using a musical plot. The 1937 film (Janet Gaynor & Frederic March) was about a fading actor bringing to stardom a new actress, while the other 3 films (1954 with Judy Garland & James Mason; 1976 with Barbara Streisand & Kris Kristofferson; and 2018 with Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper) where all about former superstar singers, who find female talent to bring to the spotlight. This 2018 version is also co-written and directed by Bradly Cooper, who gives an excellent performance in both his acting and the actual singing his own songs. There is also a very good acting performance by Lady Gaga in her debut on the feature film screen with one of her tunes receiving the Oscar for Best Song. It is probably the best of the 4 films because it delves into the individual characters equally well and has an outstanding soundtrack. it is Shakespearian in its tragic story, but uplifting in its musicality.

I’ve always enjoyed Lady Gaga’s music and was a fan of Bradley Cooper but after this, I loved this movie. It has a great story mixed with awesome music. It’s about the attempts to overcome challenges and figuring if love is enough. I think it’s a must see. Definitely a favorite of mine.
