A fun story turned into an entertaining movie with creative visuals and music. Children and adults will enjoy it. A good deal too at only 22 for the 4K edition.

Cute children’s movie, good extras on 4K DVD, some mild scary parts, but overall funny! Friends discover a yeti and go on a brave adventure to reunite him with his family.

Abominable is an interesting film in that it should NOT work as well as it does. It really has no right to work as well as it does. But, bottom line, is it DOES work and it's one of the most adorable, sweet and entertaining animated film from 2019. Of the three "yeti" films from the past 18 months, this is the one that stands head and shoulders above the rest (sorry "Missing Link" fans, but it's true...) for its heart and ability to connect with the audience. Now, that said...there's a lot of issues with it including pacing, plot, busy animation, poorly developed characters and cliches in storytelling. Sounds like a bad movie, right? Nope...this is the rare film that overcomes its weaknesses and the strength of the individual parts that DO work far far FAR outweigh its shortcomings. Rare indeed. Spoilers may ensue from here on out...you HAVE been warned. First, there are simply too many characters and the poor movie (and audience) nearly get ADHD from trying to follow each and every one. This comes from having to check off certain boxes (apparent villain who turns good, check. sidekick who turns evil, check. supporting love interest who has to grow to understand what the partner is going through, check. supporting character for comedic relief, check. etc. etc. etc.). This leads to the second issue: Second, an overly complicated plot. The core of this movie is simply someone learning to live life again after a heart shattering loss. Stick with that, because when the movie does it simply sticks its landing. There's even a connection thematically between the girl and the yeti on that front and when they are helping each other to overcome their respective challenges, the movie sings. When it busies itself with other nonsense the movie gets bogged down. We don't need an evil explorer with a sudden heart of gold or high tech drones or a private military force...it just didn't add anything. Tell your story, focus on your story and the characters you need. Girl is close to her father. Girl distances herself from everyone after his death. Girl finds a scared baby (teen? young adult? it's a bit unclear how old Everest is but he's clearly not fully grown, but his behavior and skill level demonstrated throughout the film seem to indicate a fluid age...lol) yeti and helps him get home. Yeti helps girl reconnect to life. The scene where they meet is awesome. The scene at the buddhist temple is just unbelievably moving and connects with the audience hard. When the girl's violin is accidentally smashed a bit earlier, her reaction is raw yet honest and we - the audience - want to do anything we can to help her. I know this sounds like hyperbole, but - honestly - it really isn't. When you see these scenes, and scattered others, the film just works. Much, much better than it should and the sheer volume of distracting, extraneous material in the film implies that either the filmmakers hit upon things by sheer luck (highly unlikely) or the film was created via collaboration (more likely considering the fact two studios made it). The thing that really helps connect the movie together, though, is its soundtrack. The violin theme is simply a beautiful piece of music and perhaps that connective lyrical tissue is what elevates the film beyond just a sequence of mediocre to good scenes but into a film that one wants to experience again and again. Yeah, watched it three times already...

Dreamworks has been hit or miss when it comes to releasing great animated films over the years. Whether it's Shrek or Kung Fu Panda, there some truly great movies out there, but I once How to Train Your Dragon hit theatres, and each of its consecutively great sequels, I found myself wondering if the studio had peaked with that trilogy. Well, Abominable is their latest upcoming release, and after seeing it at the Toronto International Film Festival, I can confidently say that this is surprisingly one of the very best animated films that they have released, ever. Everyone knows that the creature known as the Yeti has been known to be a myth, but in Abominable, a young girl (Yi) finds that one actually exists. Having been experimented on in laboratories until escaping and finding its way onto this girl's roof, she befriends him and makes it her mission, along with two other friends, to return him to his home on mount Everest. This particular story has been told hundreds of times, but unlike many movies that choose to copy and paste formulas, Abominable is one that truly cares about the characters and the adventure they go on, which had me falling in love with it as it progressed. Having written the story for Monster's Inc., worked in the animation department at Pixar on Toy Story and Toy Story 2, eventually directing her first animated feature in Open Season, and now officially writing and directing Abominable, completely bringing her full vision to life, Jill Culton is one with a storied career, albeit not massive. After her outing here, I must admit that I will be following her work for years to come because I believe her vision and how it was showcased, was honestly fantastic. On top of that, Dreamworks has been on a roll with incredible animation, and this movie is nothing shy of fitting that description. It should go without saying nowadays that most films released by large studios will probably hire the best of the best to create the most beautiful animation, but I just have to commend them here as well. The smooth motions of characters and the detail put into the wide landscape shots are all superb, and these elements are only elevated by a very enjoyable cast of characters, on an adventure that eventually had me in tears. If for nothing else, you'll probably enjoy looking at this movie, but it has much more than that to offer. In the end, Abominable does suffer from feeling familiar at first glance, but this movie embraces that and creates a journey that feels fresh. The themes throughout this film are meant for all ages, which is why I believe this movie will be a hit with families across the world when it hits theatres. I wasn't exactly jumping out of my seat with excitement when the trailers for this movie first began to circulate, but after experiencing it for myself, I must say that Abominable definitely surprised me in ways that I wasn't expecting. This is a great animated film and it deserves attention when it hits theatres.

I first saw this movie in the theater, not expecting much at all. It far surpassed my expectations visually and in regards to the storyline. It is nice to see creative efforts at play. Though not 100% original in concept, the story is engaging and emotionally interactive. I still remember the first time I watched it; when the bass comes in during a particular song - it cut to my soul. This film creates a lot of emotion in me, but not at all in an annoying way. It offers adventure and laughs without being distasteful or vulgar. The visuals are stunning. A great film for all ages - most specifically those who appreciate and value creative arts, animation, and music.

This was a great movie visually. We watched it on 3d blu-ray, upconverted to 4k. It would have be phenomenal in actual 4k disc. It was emotionaly warm and funny for us. Not too kidish. The bad guy story seemed kinda rushed or choppy, but still had good twist to it. They didn't get "too" crazy with political hot topics (in my opinion), while still doing justice representing a culture (in my opinion). Great use and selection of violin music. This was a great movie for our new theater room; and yet, I wish I had taken the family to the theater to see it in 3D, when it was there. I would recommend this for the visual and audio quality alone.

At LAST!! A 3D new release for sale at Best Buy!!!!! I had given up hope and resorted to Amazon for my 3D movies. Yea, I had to get it on the web site, but Best Buy Actually had it in stock!! You have all but abandoned 3D technology, leaving me and everyone else who loves 3D out in the cold. Abominable was MADE for 3D!! It loses a lot in 2D. This is a beautiful move with lots of scenery and caring relationships. The music is enchanting! The theme played on solo violin is haunting and beautiful. A simple melody leaving you wanting more. With beautiful scenery, a wonderful soundtrack, and 3D, this movie has come alive!! PLEASE KEEP THE 3D COMING!!!

Mid 30's guy. No kids. LOVED this! Not all animated stuff is JUST for kids. It's also not guaranteed to be good. We get used to quality animated stuff, Minions, How to Train your Dragon, "some" Disney stuff. The right blend of humor to young and old, a quality story, and even a bit of emotion is tough for any animated film. This one especially stuck with me due to all the above and more. Check it out.

This is a great family movie. The music is out of this world, now thisnis more classical instrumental music. The hero of the story plays the violin and finds strength through her music. I love it! Beautifully composed!

The first time my 3 year old watched it, she was a bit scared in the beginning, but after watching it once, it quickly became one of her favorites. Of course she asks for the movie by saying "Everest" and not the title, but that is what makes this movie so cute. The yeti is very lovable and kids quickly invest themselves into this character. Plus the movie has a good moral theme, so parents will like this too.

This turned out to be a very heartwarming movie that kept my kids attention. The storyline was engaging and suspenseful. I bought this as I think it has great re-watch value. I don't remember much marketing for this movie but I am pretty glad I found it last year online and watched it then. BB had a great price on the BD/DVD/Digital and it was an instant buy.

This was a terrific movie! My kids loved it, and it kept their attention throughout the whole movie 100% which is quite an accomplishment for any movie to do that. I felt the emotion in the abominable snow creature was quite masterfully portrayed and animated and acted. And I loved the message and the character twist at the end.

We rented this originally and based upon the 2K BluRay version knew this would make an excellent addition to our permanent 4K BluRay collection. And it is. The same folks who brought us the legendary "How To Train Your Dragon" series ("HTTYD") is behind "Abominable", and the tell-tale signs of "ancestry" is evident in the visual look of the characters in both (Abominable looks and act much like Toothless the dragon in "HTTYD"), as well as the musical themes and general storyline--none of which negatively impacts this family film. We have watched this many times already and it will be in our rotation for decades, no doubt. That is about as solid a recommendation there is.

Definitely love the Chinese culture music and all the animation they used in the movie was amazing. I felt it was very soothing and calm with those who love visuals and colors because it seeing new horizons and opportunities show a lot of character and respect to those who love animation.
