At the risk of sounding like a cliche I have to say I got the Acer Chromebook 311 out of necessity due to the lockdowns from COVID making computers scarce in my household. I had two kids on Zooms, my wife on Zooms, and then fights over the remaining computer for video games and movies. I needed a basic and affordable stop gap, which is the Chromebook 311 from Acer (sadly I got this far too late for the computer scarcity problem in my house).
The box comes with your Chromebook, the plug into the wall and the USB-C into the laptop, simple and sweet. The laptop itself is compact, about 11.5 x 8 and very thin when closed, with two USB-C ports (one is how you charge it), two standard USB 3.1 ports, a microSD card slot, a headphone jack, and a slot for a Kensington lock. Battery is listed as lasting 10 hours fully charged and that seems to be with actual usage as I’ve charged it once this week and used it mabe a combined six hours and still have over 50% left. The webcam built in is listed as having a wide field of view, although it seems normal to me, and when I ran the camera test online it was average of 30fps. Speakers are on the bottom of the computer but if you elevate off a surface the sound is sufficient for a mildly noisy room. Settings shows it has just over 20gb of hard drive which was odd since its advertised as having 32gb and the ChromeOS shouldn’t take up that much (although perhaps it does).
Obviously the battery surprised me in a positive way, I haven’t coddled this computer like I do with my phone or main computer where I charge them whenever I stop for a few minutes, yet it's not even dipped below half power yet! Usage will vary there but I’m satisfied with the battery. Webcams are standard on most laptops now but still it seems like a solid performer and you shouldn’t have any trouble Zooming your meetings. I was disappointed that speakers are on the bottom of the computer, when you use the laptop like I think 99% of people do the sound is highly muffled. Why is this still a problem in 2021, speakers should all be facing up toward the user by this point. Keyboard is standard, no frills QWERTY with numbers above and select basic feature keys along the top row (sound up down, full screen, refresh, etc.) with a touchpad to navigate but no scroll bar.
I’ve never owned a ChromeOS laptop before so much of my complaints are with the way it utilizes some of my standard apps. Main example being I use DuckDuckGo for browsing but for some reason the ChromeOS doesn’t include a scroll bar on the side of the window and trying to scroll down with the arrow keys (there is no page up page down keys) ends up cycling the cursor through fields/links on the page so you end up pressing down several times with no indication its doing anything before suddenly jumping the screen. If you use Chrome browser the scroll bar is there on the side so it seems to be an app issue not an OS issue but I was disappointed nonetheless.
My biggest complaint with the laptop is again going to vary depending how you use it but it doesn’t seem to multitask well. While using basic features like typing this review or watching YouTube it works just fine but when I tried to play online games (simple Clicker games on Kongregate, so nothing even remotely intensive….no graphics should work easily) I found the laptop to lag and even crashed the browser in one instance. If you were to try to use the webcam with a browser and any kind of music or video I suspect the memory would be pushed to the limit if not breaking point. This won’t be an issue if you’re just looking for basic computing but if you need to multitask several apps at a time you may want to look for something a little more advanced. Overall this is a perfect homework laptop where you can research online and write out an essay or report without worrying about productivity being taken over by unauthorized gaming. The real winner in this Chromebook is really the battery which seems to be a total beast with no sign of slowing after days of light use and no charging top offs.

I like this Chromebook a lot. It's not the most powerful device I've ever used, but with Chrome OS, it doesn't need to be.
This Chromebook has 2 USB 3.0 type A ports, 2 USB type C ports, and a micro-SD card reader.
The shell is plastic, and it's an absolute fingerprint magnet. This is my biggest complaint about this device as the track pad gets all smeared and nasty after only a few hours of use with clean hands.
This Chromebook does NOT have a touchscreen, but the screen does look fairly nice and gets reasonably bright.
This Chromebook has access to the Google Play store, and it did a reasonable job with pretty much any Android app that I threw at it.
I really like the silver look on the exterior, and I think that it's a shame that they didn't continue this look on the inside.
The inside has a weird looking texture thing happening. The palmrest has a black, faux brushed metal look going on; and the keys have a lightly textured thing happening. I wish that they'd gone with one or the other. Having both just looks "busy."
The 32GB of storage isn't too impressive, but being able to supplement it with a micro-SD card is huge.
I think that this would be a great device for a student. It would also make a great secondary device.

Changed my mind about chromebooks!

As a typical PC user, I am all about specs. So this Acer Chromebook came as a surprise. 32GB storage and 4GB of ram looked suspect--- until I experienced it.
I’m a google user, so I know how the google ecosystem magically works. It is easy and intuitive. And the better thing is, the system works harmoniously on these specs. So this chromebook was so easy to use and so convenient too. Boots up quicky when you open the lid—something you need for impatient children.
Form factor is compact and light. It is perfect for our 6-year old. As long as it works on school tasks, Youtube AND ROBLOX, it was all we needed. Usually, if you use Roblox on a mobile device, like a phone or a tablet, it freezes after 40 minutes of being on. This chromebook kept going. In fact, battery like is amazing. You won’t last hours on Roblox on a regular PC. In this chromebook, I was able to keep a farming simulator on for at least 6 hours unplugged and it still had juice in it—if only I had more time to stay on it to see how long it will fully drain.
It is reasonably-priced too, so I was not afraid of it being banged up; although the casing itself seems very sturdy and durable albeit being light. It easily fits in a slim purse (well diaper bag to be exact) and that small pocket behind the front car seat.
This is such a good value device. Acer did a pretty good job on this compact package!

Chromebooks can be hit or miss with quality and speed. While you don't need a beast of a processor and memory for Chrome OS to run well, some lower end devices leave much to be desired. This device was very responsive and browsed the web very well. The screen looks good and watching videos is really good as well. Impressed!

Solid chromebook for school and watching videos

My son is turning 11 this year and needed something for him to use for school and when he wants to watch videos.
Based on what he needed for school we ended up choosing a chromebook for him. We knew he didn’t need anything top of the line so this was perfect.
When I first opened the package and took the chromebook out i immediately thought this thing looks designed for kids. It’s not bulky per se but it does have big bezels and the whole thing is a bit thick. But it feels well built and the keyboard was very responsive.
During the setup the chromebook asked if this was for a kid and let me set it up for my son super easily and that was great.
Is it the best or fastest machine on the market..no it’s not but it does everything we need it to do.
If you need something for a younger kid for school or watching videos this chromebook is perfect for that.

Middle-of-the road Chromebook

The Acer model 311 Chromebook is a serviceable offering but won't knock your socks off. The specs are typical for the category and the product arrived with everything you need in the box to get up and running quickly. The 11.6 inch screen is adequate and clear if not particularly bright or colorful. Off axis viewing is dim but that is typical for a product like this.
The bigger issue for me is overall build quality. The case seems a bit thin and the keyboard and trackpad don't seem to be very durable.
My intent is carry this in my travel bag to gigs and I hope that it can hold up to the wear and tear.
I don't want to end this review on a negative note. The product offers the expected suite of features and performance. But I would strongly suggest that you get it into your hands to decide about its durability for yourself.

Dear Unhappy, Unlike a Windows laptop, Chromebooks do not need antivirus protection because you cannot download or run .exe files on these devices. Here is a link that has information on this you might find helpful: https://www.chromebookhq.com/antivirus-for-chromebook/. The free security may be offered for Windows laptops rather than Chromebooks, but you might check with Best Buy to clarify to what products that offer applies. This machine set up in minutes and is exactly what I wanted in a super portable laptop! I find it doesn't heat up the way some other smaller computers do so I'm comfortable with my young kids using it and Google/Chrome makes it so easy to set up Families that it was super simple to give each of the boys their own (monitored) access to the laptop so we can easily take it on summer trips and not have to lug around a bunch of extra devices!

Acer definitely was looking to deliver a basic, no frills, budget minded Chromebook that is small, lightweight and ultra portable. They knocked it out of the park with this one!
If you are looking for a high end gaming laptop, this is definitely not for you. But if you are looking for something that will handle basic tasks with ease, you've found what you are looking for.
This laptop is quite small. Less than 12 inches across and also very lightweight. Its very easy to throw in your bag or carry around with you all day without any problems.
Being a Chromebook its great for using the Google office suite as well as doing online work and surfing as well. For those tasks, its a very capable machine. Even sites like YouTube and Netflix work great. Sure, you aren't going to get 4K video, but it works great playing at lower resolutions.
It is a little limited with the 4GB of memory and only 32GB of hard drive space. But it is a solid state drive, so it makes it quite a fast machine, booting up in a matter of seconds. There is also a SD card slot so you can add more internal storage if you need to.
As far as ports go, you get 2 standard USB ports, and a USB-C Port as well as a 1/8" headphone jack and Micro SD slot. SO you're pretty much covered there as well!
I wont get into the operating system, cause that's separate from the performance of the laptop. But I will say that it runs the Chrome OS very well. I didn't notice any lag or anything and was able to zip around between different apps quickly.
Overall, if you're looking for a lightweight and compact Chromebook that wont break the bank. This is definitely work checking out! It will do all of your basic tasks quickly and easily!

This is a great low profile chrome book. Set up was a breeze and everything work out of the gate. Could be a little fasted but for the money it works very well. It carry most of the basic functions you would expect. I have even been able to use it to cast to a larger monitor. The is a little degraded video however I’ve seen much worse. Over all I’ve been please with this chromebook

So after some preliminary use, this Chromebook is ideal for the average user. Not every device needs all the bells and whistles. It starts up and loads quickly. Programs ran with no issues or lag. I have solid internet speeds so that helps a lot. Screen is clear and sharp enough for the specs. This would be great for anyone 8 to 88. Battery life is also on par and held longer than I expected. Netflix worked with no issues as well as YouTube etc. This is at the right price point and quite affordable.
