I'm disappointed in this item. It's the second one I bought & this one the screen does not shut off when its closed even though I have it set to sleep when closed. I've heard the battery warning as its about to die after being closed for a while. What is going on here?

      Dear DebraC,
If your Chromebook Plus isn't going into sleep mode when you close the lid, ensure that the "Sleep when lid is closed" setting is enabled in your Chromebook's power settings. You can find this setting in Settings > Device > Power. Also, check if there are any other peripherals connected that might be interfering with the sleep function, and try disabling Bluetooth or disconnecting them. If this does not resolve the issue please contact our support team at 866-695-2237; they are available to assist 24/7 for in-warranty products.

If you prioritize a beautiful display, fast performance, a secure and user-friendly Chrome OS experience, and appreciate a sleek and portable design, the Acer Chromebook Plus 516 GE is an excellent choice! The star of the show is undoubtedly the 16-inch WQXGA (2560 x 1600) display. Text appears sharp, and visuals are stunning, making it ideal for tasks like photo editing, watching movies, or browsing through high-resolution content. The 120Hz refresh rate adds a smooth and responsive feel, especially when scrolling through web pages or playing games. Under the hood, a 12th Gen Intel Core i5 processor delivers the power to handle demanding applications. Whether you're multitasking between dozens of Chrome tabs, running video editing software, or streaming cloud games, the Chromebook Plus 516 GE tackles it with ease. The 256GB PCIe Gen4 SSD provides ample storage for your files and ensures speedy boot times. The backlit keyboard offers a comfortable typing experience, even in low-light conditions. While it doesn't have the snazziness of a full-fledged gaming laptop with fancy RGB lighting, the white backlight ensures you can see the keys clearly. Loved that they included a protective sleeve to add a layer of security for your Chromebook while you're on the go. The Not-So-Perfect Points: It's important to acknowledge some potential drawbacks. With only 8GB of RAM, multitasking with very demanding applications might push the Chromebook to its limits. If you need a machine for heavy-duty video editing or running complex software, a laptop might be a better choice. Another point to consider is the lack of a touchscreen display. This might be a dealbreaker for some users who enjoy the versatility of interacting with their device directly on the screen. Finally, Chrome OS, while powerful for everyday tasks, can't run traditional desktop software. If you rely on specific programs, a Chromebook won't be a suitable replacement.

      Dear VertaB,
Chromebooks are different from Windows laptop products in that they are designed to be used primarily while connected to the Internet, with most applications and documents living in the cloud. Because of this they don’t have much for on-board storage but they also are not expensive either. Chromebooks run off apps like an Android phone or tablet so you cannot download and install applications or .exe files. If you need to use third party software applications that must be installed on the computer, a Chromebook is likely not for you, where a Windows laptop would suit you better. If you have questions on using your Chromebook please contact our support team at 1-866-695-2237, chat or social media, and we will be glad to help.

I got this Acer Chromebook to use as a bedside entertainment center, so I wanted something that could stream and have quality screen resolution. This Chromebook is excellent for my limited uses: Google search, Google email, e-books, and Prime Video. The video quality is very good. I also needed a reliable blue tooth as I wear comfy headphones that I can sleep in. contender. This Chromebook boasts a screen that offers vibrant colors and crisp visuals, making it a pleasure to use for both work and entertainment. The speakers are surprisingly good, providing a rich audio experience that complements the high-quality display. Performance-wise, it’s equipped with a a decent processor with good enough memory, ensuring smooth operation for everyday tasks. While it’s a bit on the heavier side, it compensates with a robust build and a battery life that’s sufficient for a full day of work or classes, clocking in at 8.5 hours. The keypad is pretty good and responsive. This is nice for homeschooling, easy to carry, turns into a tablet, easy to watch movies on. The battery life is still great depending on use. Charge is still quick. Response to things is still fast. I get frequent updates but they don't interfere with my work in any way. Overall, a very decent laptop for home use. Would recommend this to anyone.

I usually don't write reviews, but I had to for this Chromebook. Keep in mind, this is a Chromebook. It's not a super powerful gaming PC. That being said, this thing performs so well with GeForce now. And the 120 hz refresh rate makes it even better. I see a lot of people talking badly about GeForce now and cloud gaming but when you hardwire into this Chromebook and use it for cloud gaming I have no issues. I play marvel rivals, call of duty, etc. on this and can compete very well. It will NEVER beat a dedicated computer but what I love is that I won't have to upgrade my PC over time. Paying $20 a month for Geforce Now ends up being around $240 a year. So depending on how much you upgrade PCs/hardware or consoles etc. this could be way cheaper and keep in mind you get top of the line 4080 or whatever GPUs which I would never buy for a PC because of the cost. So even to just buy a 4080 GPU at $1,000+, you can get 4+ years of GeForce now. And they will continue upgrading the GPUs on the server end. Yes this is all subject to change, price per month will increase over time, they may change tiers, etc. But knowing that I don't have to create more waste with more dedicated hardware on my end over time makes this an easy device to pick up for $450 when it's on sale if you need a new computer. Also Chrome OS might be limited, but that's also why I love it. It's clean, simple, and doesn't have all of the complexities of windows. It just works. Idk best of luck in your decision making but I love this thing and can't talk more highly of it. Oh also, for the person talking about discord, you can just use discord in chrome and that has been working for me great. Thanks for listening to me ramble. But be kind to others, and tell somebody you love them. Peace.

I have to start by reiterating that this is my first time using a Chromebook, and if this is yours I would suggest you do an online search for things you should know, for example, there's no physical Delete key. I do appreciate the simplicity of what you get. There's no obvious extra Acer software installed like you would get with a Windows machine. Just all the Google/Chrome focused goodness ready to get you checking email or working in very quick fashion. I think setup, including updates, took under 15 minutes. That would be unheard of on a Windows machine. Just in case you were considering attempting to game on this machine, I think you're OK installing the Google Play (ie mobile phone) apps, but I did not have much luck with Nvidia streaming or using Steam (which runs the Linux version). Even attempted Xbox cloud streaming and just playing Darkest Dungeon, the game locked up within 5 minutes... Lots of physical highlights to this machine. The outside itself has a very clean, modern look. It is pretty light, quite thin, yet still has an available Ethernet port. There is a pretty substantial touch pad, if you're into that. Keyboard is backlit, though I don't know how to change the color, and has a nice tactile feel. Sounds from the machine is servicable. The display is large, bright, and crisp. You also get a nice carrying case which I think may be a first for laptops I've received. Unit doesn't make any noise, and I have yet to have it ever feel like it was even heating up. The battery for normal use will pretty much last you through a work day (verified sadly). If it matters to you, for the most part the laptop comes packed in recyclable cardboard.

A family member ordered the Acer Chromebook Plus 514 and it arrived on time, as promised. After unboxing it, which was very easy, the Chromebook downloaded the latest and greatest software and apps. This took a couple of minutes, no big deal. I owned a Chromebook for four years withtout any defects. When it crashed, I purchased another computer in the Chromebook family to give me peace of mind. This computer is fast. It can handle mutilpile tabs without errors. I recommend this computer to anyone who uses a laptop for more than one hour a day, because the keys are ergonimical and typing is a breeze, and comfortable.

    Nice Entry Level Chromebook Plus

First thing to note is this is a Chromebook Plus, not just a Chromebook. That means it has upgraded specs compared to non-Plus Chromebooks like - IPS panel - 2K screen - Ethernet port Sound is average – not much bass or deeper tones, so still get a somewhat tin can sound. Keyboard feels plastic-y. The button surfaces are smooth for fast finger movement, a nod to its gaming features. Also especially for gaming, it has an Ethernet port so you can play with minimal network delay. The screen is 16” and its matte finish and handles glare fairly. It’s not a touchscreen, though. It also wobbles if touched or the desk is shaken. With regular typing, it’s not an issue. The native 2560x1600 resolution paired with the 16” size gives you ample space options to set your actual viewing resolution to something comfortable. The sharpness and dynamic range are fine for casual use, but I would not have this be my main display for any serious photo or video editing. Even streaming some movies will feel a bit lackluster compared to better displays. The camera and microphone are average. I recommend using an external mic (either dedicated or via a headset) if you plan to do a lot of talking through it. The apps on this laptop respond quicker than other Chromebooks I’ve used. Almost every app or browser interaction feels snappy, despite the entry level processor (Intel Core 5 Series 1) and Intel Graphics chip. A soft sleeve is included, and you’ll want to use as the outside surface attracts smudges. All in all this is a nice entry level Chromebook Plus and useful for everyday school or work. If you can get it on sale, it’s an even better value.

To start off, i have a lot to say about this Chromebook. Its a amazing, versatile, and fast enough laptop that you can take pretty much anywhere. Its a great work/ game-streaming laptop. One thing that i did to "upgrade" this Chromebook was to install windows and change the ssd in it, (in order to upgrade the ssd, you have to disable write protection in powershell). Downside is that the RAM cannot be upgraded. *WARNING* DO NOT ATTEMPT TO INSTALL WINDOWS OR UPGRADE THE SSD IF YOU DONT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING! Do you research before you do anything to it.

Great device with a limiting OS

This is by far the best Chromebook that I've ever used, but I still end up finding it wanting. Perhaps I'm coming from a privileged position, but it seems that the point of these devices is to have a cheap machine for students (and I understand that IT professionals like them as well). Ultimately, this is a capable machine for online tasks, whatever games you'd like to run from the Play Store, and is even capable of doing basic video editing if you're interested in creating YouTube videos. However, what holds the device back is the Chrome OS. Yes, it is capable of doing most of what you would like to do, and there are probably free apps to do a great deal. I have downloaded a video editing app to create a YouTube video, so it's possible, but it took downloading three different apps before finding one that will actually work full-screen on a monitor. Similarly with games - yes this is a capable laptop, but when downloading games you need to know what you're looking for. Anything that's completely dependent on touch or gyroscopic control is not going to work, or if it does the aspect ratio may be very strange given the form factor being very different from a mobile device. That being said, if you find something that works it's a very capable machine. I can't shake the feeling that Chromebooks are basically "my kids first computer" and if you want to specialize into anything then you'll have to go to something else (be it Mac or Windows). It's great that you can download free apps to do most any productivity, but eventually, you're going to actually need Office products for work or school, or specialized software for a class, or Adobe for video editing, or any other specialized software which will require purchasing the software and a different machine. I must say, the graphics processing is great as it has no problem running videos on a 4K monitor while connected to my docking station where it has the built-in screen, a 4K monitor, and two 1080p monitors. However, this is another instance of ChromeOS being limited, as you cannot adjust the resolution on a connected monitor. If it's a 4K monitor, you need to be ready to deal with VERY small text. All-in-all, this seems like a good first computer for someone, but a machine that you'll ultimately need to upgrade from once you know what you want to be doing. Good sound, good battery, great display, great connectivity options (2 USB-C/Thunderbolt ports!), but a limited OS.
