It's a great deal for the price, with sacrifices

This device is fantastic for the price and is almost exactly what I was looking for. You're not going to find these specs for $629 anywhere else. The device does make some sacrifices though. The most obvious competitor here is the Pixelbook Go for $649, so I'll make some comparisons during the review.
Specs: The Spin 713 has a 10th gen i5 u series processor, 8GB of RAM, and a 128GB of NVMe storage. In short, this thing is blazing fast. The Pixelbook Go as an 8th gen m3 processor, 8GB of RAM, and 64GB of NVMe storage. It's not slow by any means, but the Spin 713 is clearly faster and offers double the storage.
Screen: The Spin 713 again wins here. With a 2K 3:2 display, you're getting a portable, yet large display, and the image quality is great. I previously had a smaller 3K display (Pixel Slate) and this doesn't feel like a downgrade at all. Meanwhile, the Pixelbook Go has a 1080p screen. While it's not a bad display, it's not pixel-dense if that's something you're looking for.
Build: The Spin 713 makes some sacrifices here. The build quality itself is still good, but it can't touch the Pixelbook Go. With that said, it's a solid device and it has a nice keyboard and trackpad. The bezels are appreciably small too. Oh, and the Spin, of course, can flip 360 degrees and is USI-stylus compatible, neither of which the Pixelbook Go can do.
Ports: The Spin 713 has everything. This is very rare for a new Chromebook. You get two USB-Cs, a USB-A, an HDMI, and a headphone jack. The Pixelbook Go misses the USB-A and HDMI.
Peripherals: The Spin 713 drops the ball here. The speakers are tinny and the webcam is mediocre. This is really a deciding factor here. If these don't matter to you, for example, if you use headphones or an external webcam, then no worries. But if you need a laptop with these onboard, the Spin's just aren't very good. The Pixelbook Go on the other hand, has great speakers and a good camera.
So, overall, it really comes down to the speakers and webcam. If you can live with the poor speakers and camera, this is a fantastic device. If you downright need a good set of speakers and webcam, then this device is not for you. With that said, I love my Spin 713 and think it's a great value for $629.

I’m upgrading from a trial/entry level, spontaneous Black Friday purchase of an Acer Spin 11, which just wasn’t enough computer for me. Stylus support is just as important to me as specs, so it came down to the Asus C346, the as-yet-unreleased i5/8 gig version of Lenovo’s Flex 5 Chromebook, and this Acer, which showed up out of nowhere out of the heavens, like an answer to all my whinging.
Well, the Asus was the perfect computer at an imperfect price, and there’s no telling when that Lenovo is going to drop (and I'd prefer a Project Athena machine), so I went with this after reading the very scarce info on such a new computer.
So far, so great! It’s not perfect, so let me start with the bad. The speakers, quite frankly, are terrible. With upward facing speakers becoming the norm on more pricey Chromebooks, Acer dropped the ball here. It sounds exactly the same as my old Spin 11: tinny sound, no bass, and you’ll be hitting the ‘volume up’ rocker, only to be disappointed to find it’s already up as high as it’ll go.
Next come the camera and mic. They ain’t great. For video calls the computer gets the job done, but if teleconferencing is important to you and you need good stylus input, maybe wait on the Lenovo.
Now for the good:
Oh my dog, I love this thing. The typing experience is very nice. The keys aren’t super clicky, but they’re not mushy either; Acer has found a happy medium. I type a lot and am quite happy with the keyboard.
The trackpad is fast and responsive, no complaints there. And the speed of the computer itself is very snappy. I tend to be a tab hog and I like running lots of apps and once and the thing has yet to balk. The fan cools just fine and is very quiet.
Ye gods, the ports! The versatility in having a USB-A and full HDMI make this a jack-of-all-trades for those of us who are our families' tech support gurus. And that headphone jack makes up for the crappy sound without having to remember whether or not you charged your Bluetooth headphones.
Screen brightness is great and I can use the computer in full Texas sunlight. And the 3:2 aspect ratio is absolutely stunning and immersive. Keyboard backlighting could go a little brighter for my tastes, but I’m a weirdo. I like to use tablet mode fairly frequently, and it doesn’t feel like a laggy afterthought. It’s a quick, fun experience.
The one thing I can’t speak to is the full stylus experience. The computer supports USI input, and the sole USI stylus on the market right now is always sold out. I have multiple S-pens/Samsung Note-compatible stylus’ laying around the house, and none of them work with this screen. So I’ve got a plain-old capacitive until I can get my hands on something better. But from what I’ve seen with the stylus on other USI computers, I’m looking forward to doing some art!

First off huge kudos to Acer for putting real NVME drive in this unit. Last years spin used emmc storage. For those who may not understand the emmc storage is faster than a spinning hard drive but much slower than say a SATA 3 SSD. All chromebooks including all of googles own pixelbook go use emmc storage which is technically an ssd.
Having a true NVME basically removes the last bottleneck that was present on almost all chromebooks.
I have had 3 Chromebooks including this one. First was a cheap Acer, the second was a Google Pixel Slate with keyboard which I sold to get this. I am beyond happy with my choice.
I am a person who loves operating systems. I use MacOS, iOS, Android, ChromeOS, Windows 10, and Linux. So I have toyed with ChromeOS in the past and the Pixel Slate and previous Acer were just not good enough to keep me in the ecosystem. This Acer changes everything. Sure, they could have used a better processor but this comet lake quad core processor is no slouch and seems to be decent in battery life and thermals so far. Add one of the best screens on a laptop besides maybe the Macbook pro 13 covered in gorilla glass, an all metal build, gorilla glass track pad, nice backlit keyboard, great battery life, and adequate speakers and NVME ssd makes this the best chromebook you can currently buy. Add that it is not a rip off and is priced right and you have one of the most compelling Chromebook offerings I have ever experienced before.
The speakers are really not as bad as people are saying. I would like them to get louder and to be placed on the deck of the laptop instead of on the bottom. If they improved the speaker placement and volume then this would be perfect for the money. As it is it is almost perfect for the money.
So if you are a gamer or a graphic designer then this is probably not for you or if you use Mac only or Windows only software. If you are anyone else then this is a surprisingly fun and useful device. From a security standpoint and not a privacy standpoint ChromeOS is vastly superior to WIndows and in some ways even MacOS because of the way the system is designed. Any software can be compromised but ChromeOS is a hard target by default and you don't have to add antivirus software that acts as a virus/reduces resources and costs money.
If you are someone who travels or uses public Wifi a lot this also would be a safer choice.
I just can't say enough good things about this Chromebook. It can't do everything a regular computer can do but it sure comes close and might just be enough for most people. Add a pixel phone and like apple you have instant integration. Oh and this unit will be supported until 2028!!!
The last thing I want to talk about is build quality. Now if you like industrial design and things to just look really cool this is not going to impress you, may as well get a pixelbook go. If you like something that is well designed and well built then this is it. This device is solid and with Milspec design is tough. It is all metal and glass down to the touchpad. I really like the build quality of this device. It feels like it will last me many years. To be honest with 8 years roughly of support I am very interested with this hardware to keep this device for as long as possible.
When you consider the hardware this unit has, the software support in terms of years, build quality and specs there simply is no other Chromebook on the market that even comes close!! Thank you Acer for this amazing product and not ripping us off!!

Premium 2 in 1 Chromebook from Acer, love it

This is a Premium Chromebook from Acer, the Acer ChromeBook Spin 713, and 2 in 1 design. The 3:2 screen aspect ratio makes it seem bigger than it is, about as tall as a 15 inch laptop. Vivid screen colors, great angle of view too. Maybe because it has a Core i5 processor it gets warmer than my other basic fanless Chromebooks, but I still have not heard the fan, no worries about fan noise. Smooth and large trackpad, glass. Much faster than my older Chromebooks, starts up in seconds. OS updates until June 2028, long life. Getting use to the keyboard, and the speakers aren't very loud. Love the long battery life, and simplicity of the Chrome OS, I can get most things done on this laptop. If I have to run a Windows program, I use Chrome Remote Desktop to run from my old desktop machine. Since most settings sync, and files are in the cloud, switching between my Chromebooks is seamless, great features from Google. I don't use the tablet mode often, but switches easily, good way to read PDFs. Lots of ports, including HDMI and microSD card slot (goes in flush).

This is a super competent Chromebook, purchased mine just over a year ago. Easily runs Linux apps (and was able to run Steam on Linux, too). Great all around performance for mostly basic tasks like watching movies, opening way too many browser tabs, and playing simple games like Stardew Valley (haven't tried any very complex games).
The speakers are a little quiet. I'll never understand why Chromebooks frequently put the speakers on the bottom. I guess it is assumed you'll always be in tent mode if you're watching / listening to something?
The screen is nice and bright and clear. I like the square dimensions vs 16:9 - web pages just look better.
Battery life is decent unless you're running it at full brightness.
The only negative I can say about this Chromebook is that it has sharp, pointy corners and edges that make it super uncomfortable to actually use in your lap if you're wearing shorts. It has a couple of little rubber bumper things on the hinges, one of them fell off long ago, and the other one is on its way out.
I've powerwashed it once or twice for various reasons, none of them were for performance reasons, however. This still runs as snappily as it did the first day I started using it. Would buy again.

Screen PWM Letdown

I was so excited to order one of these after "TeamAcer" here assured me that the Acer Spin 713 did not have screen flicker due to pulse width modulation (PWM) screen dimming.
Unfortunately, such a beautiful bright IPS screen is unusable for me from irritation due to PWM around 200Hz.
Those with sensitivity to PWM can get nausea, headaches, migraines and dizziness after a short period of exposure.
Due to shipping issues, I did not receive the chromebook until after the return window.
Back to the chromebook:
Here are the good points -
I was impressed by the specifications, it has plenty of RAM, CPU is very fast, and so is the NVMe SSD which I understand can be upgraded.
I tested it with external monitors, and connected dual 2k 1440p @60Hz via the HDMI and USB-C ports without any problem using an HDMI cable and a USBC to HDMI cable, and also tried it from the USB-C on both sides.
I tested the screen and tried but could see no dead or stuck pixels, and illumination appears to be flawless with no light bleed that I could notice.
The touchpad is glass, smooth and works very well.
After all the other comments on speakers and webcam, I agree the webcam image are poor quality, the speakers were not as bad as I was expecting meaning they didn't offend me.
And what was not so good?
For me PWM in the screen, the roughly textured plastic keyboard deck, the camera and lastly the fit and finish of the assembly.
The plastic deck around the keyboard is quite a grainy rough texture, and does not feel pleasant to touch.
I actually prefer the smooth plastic deck in my HP 14 AMD Chromebook that I got on sale last year for around $150.
The keyboard on the Spin 713 is just ok - at least it is backlit I guess. I actually prefer the keyboard on the cheap HP 14 AMD Chromebook (but that could be because I am more used to that one)
The fit of panels around the edges do not feel flush to the touch in some areas and was also a little disappointing.
The aluminium on the outside of the lid and on the base feel ok, but does not in any way make me think of precision craftsmanship.
If only this chromebook had a flicker free display, all would have been forgiven and for me it would have been perfect.
Alas, thanks to Acer cheaping out on dimming, for me they have absolutely ruined what is otherwise a very good LCD panel.
I am particularly disappointed.

This is my 4th chromebook and I have to say easily the best so far. I'll just get to the basics. Screen: This is the first 3:2 screen I've had on a laptop of any kind, and it's Awesome. I won't be going back to 16:9. Very vibrant and rich colors and brightness is blinding!.
Processor: Overkill for a chromebook! 10th gen. I5 U processor. Enough said. Speakers: The only let down so far. Not very good at all, but I use headphones, so that takes care of that. keyboard and tracpad: About the same as my other chromebooks, but this is the first one with backlit keys. Very useful. Battery life: Around 10 hrs the best i can tell. Overall: If the speakers were better (and maybe a fingerprint reader) this would be the perfect chromebook.

I love this chromebook! It's fast, it's bright, good vibrant colors, keyboard feels good, connectivity is super simple, good battery life, but but little stuff.
It's a little heavy. The corners are a little sharp. It gets a little hot if it's not on a table or free air flow. The speakers are terrible. The lid takes a couple go's sometimes to open and sometimes it seemingly takes a few seconds too long to connect to the internet or bluetooth (first gen wifi 6 card problems?). BUT, it's great for surfing the web, cooking, youtube, movies and light tasking. But, but again, the speakers, so have a bluetooth speaker and or headphones.
BUT, none of the buts are enough to make me hate it, return it or give it a bad rating. For the price on sale, and if you really have your eyes on an actual chromebook, this one is tough to beat, unless Samsung gets their pricing, features and battery life together, but I doubt it.

This is a great chromebook. The amount of computer you are getting for the price is unmatched. A 10th gen i5 processor, 8gb of ram, and nvme storage is the top/flagship model of other chromebooks, like the pixelbook go, which bring the price up to around 1000.
Perforce is great - with chromeos, android apps, and Linux apps. The display is beautiful and responsive. Build quality is so great.. The only let down are the speakers. They are just bad. But I think thats a great trade off for the specs and price. I'd rather have bad speakers than subpar anything else, including build quality. This exceeds everywhere else.
Its chromeos, so it won't do everything that windows or macs can do. But I can't stand windows and macs are double the price.

Brand new to chromebook but instantly amazed how fast it is. The speed it processes is fantastic. So much you can do but have so much to learn. I was able to use instantly without knowledge. However it's time to learn features I use often and need. Thanks to Unboxed Chromebook for their reviews on this product. I have zero regrets. No fan sound. Battery life is good. Keyboard perfect feel. Love the 2:1 screen ratio. Was worried at first, but love it.size is perfect. I've only owned 17" screens but don't feel any loss in screen. Only complaint is the speakers. Everyone complaint. I use ear buds which work well. Wish they come up with a update for speakers.

I've only had it a few weeks, but so far so good. The main reason I got it was the powerful processor/ram and the quality/bright screen. I spend a lot of time camping and it's always a bummer when screens are unreadable in the sunlight, so it was very gratifying to see this one is super bright, sharp, and readable outside! Battery life is as advertised, near 10 hours. The only downsides so far are the speakers are very quiet and from what I understand from other reviews the webcam is not so good, tho I haven't tried it yet. The speaker issue is easily remedied by using a Bluetooth speaker.

We replaced a 2014 Macbook Air 13" with the Acer Spin 713 as my wife's laptop used for email, browsing, Amazon and other ordering, setting appointments and other apps. The weight and feel is 99% the same as the Macbook Air. The specs say there is a fan, but it has never been heard or felt. Comfortable and not hot when used on the lap. Screen specs exceeded the Macbook Air. The battery lasts all days most days. The I5 10th Gen processor is fast. On sale at $549 it was higher priced than low end Chromebooks, but very well worth the money for our needs.

I have been using Chromebooks since the Cr-48 pilot project in 2010.
For my needs, the Acer 713 is the best Chromebook to date:
— Long battery life
— Brilliant screen
— Full complement of ports (including USB Type-A, a full size HDMI, and a microUSB slot that is flush with the case)
— Backlit keyboard with good feel and trave
— Outstanding performance thanks to the 10th generation i5 processor and NVMe solid state drive.
— 8 Gb of RAM and 128Gb of local storage mean that it should be obsolete for a long time.

So I have waited nearly a month before writing this review. I wanted to let my initial reaction to the device (in regards to both pros and cons) die down a bit.
Over the last several weeks, nothing has really changed in my opinion of the device. Everyone has heard about the sub-par speakers so I will not dwell on those here (but yes, they are that bad).
I guess my initial desire for this device was to have a premium device in terms of screen and performance. With that, I succeeded. My opinion of the build quality remains, however. It just doesn't feel or look (if that matters to you) premium. I get it - It is a $1000 dollar spec device in a $600 unit. It is really hard to get a screen like this at that price, along with a 10th Gen Core i5 and 8 GB of RAM. I'd say nearly impossible.
Mine has a sharp edge right below the side volume rocker switch (where the aluminum and plastic case parts fit together. It is actually quite embarrassing for Acer. I'm just going to say it - it may be aluminum, but it just looks and feels like a cheaper plastic Acer device. It exhibits considerable flex (i.e. don't squeeze it too tight!).
I love the screen display ratio. It reminds me of my original Google Chromebook Pixel in that regard. Perfect for browsing and web work.
So in closing, this is a keeper for me. I would recommend to anyone, just know that if you want a nice solid chunk of aluminum, you may want to look elsewhere. If you want a budget premium device, look no further, you've found the best.

I purchased this a few days ago, and it seems to be as good as it gets as far as Chromebook's go. I bought this mostly for web browsing and media. I like the port selection and full size HDMI, there's also a Micro SD slot. The 3:2 display almost kept me from buying this product, but a very helpful Best Buy employee told me to think of it as a 15.6" display with a inch taken off each side. He was absolutely right, and what almost kept me from buying this Chromebook, ended up being one of my favorite parts about it! So, yes I'm impressed so far with this Acer Chromebook. Performance is great, battery life is great, build quality and display are outstanding. The track pad is one of the best I've used. The 2-1 feature works well, and back lit keyboard is nice. I've had no issues connecting any Bluetooth devices, and the WiFi has been reliable. There isn't much to nit pick about, but nothing's ever perfect. The down firing speakers are pretty mediocre at this price point. the keyboard I think is decent, but I'm no pro typist either. I'd like to see some concave (or dimpled) keys, and more of a contrasting color.

Pros:
- Awesome screen resolution.
- Excellent hardware design and implementation. The aluminum body is beautifully designed and implemented.
- The i5 version runs smooth and is very responsive.
- The backlit keyboard is a plus but I'm sure it doesn't help with the batter life.
- The Spin 713 isn't much heavier than my original Acer R11.
- The USB-3 and USB-C port is a great bonus.
- The HDMI port is a god-send. There aren't many Chromebooks out there that give you this option. It's nice to just be able to bring an HDMI cable and plug in to any monitor that is HDMI-capable.
Con:
- Battery life. My first Chromebook, an Acer R11, is about 4 years old now but it still holds a 8-10 hour battery life.
- Footprint. The Spin 713 is a bit larger and takes up a bit of more room in my backpack than my R11.
- Price. It is a bit pricier than some of the budget Chromebooks currently being offered but none offer the design and functionality the Spin 713 does under $500.

This is an absolutely awesome Chromebook. I use it for all sorts of stuff. The 3:2 screen ratio is excellent for a laptop. I never though I would want anything other than 16:9, but I was wrong. As a career IT Admin and former PC Repair business owner, I couldn't rate this Chromebook any higher. It's blazingly fast and takes everything you throw at it in stride. The battery lasts for days, and it's the perfect size to go anywhere. The fan is a non-issue; I don't recall even hearing it yet. The beautiful and perfectly proportioned touch screen is a joy to use - laptop mode, tent mode, or as a tablet. The Gorilla Glass touchpad makes a huge difference as well. Effortlessly pair with a Bluetooth speaker or headphones, and a Logitech camera for unbeatable multimedia and web conferences. It's a no-brainer as an inexpensive, high-powered workhorse capable of anything and future-proofed to not disappoint for a long time to come.
