Under-powered, laggy mixed-bag? (Not enough RAM?)

I really want to like this thing, but at the moment, I'm finding it a little difficult. On paper, it sounds good. Quad core processor, 1GB or RAM, Bluetooth, GPS, DTS-HD sound. but in the real world, it seems to often be extremely laggy, and has several times frozen and [I assume] randomly rebooted itself when its UI or "Processing System" froze/failed. So, setup seemed to be pretty simple this morning. Took all of about 5-10 minutes to set up the initial settings and login. Part of that was simply me remembering my recently changed WiFi password. (The tech nerd in me facepalms slightly.) But, after that, things kind of went sideways when installing apps. It comes with quite a few apps installed. Many of which I'll probably never use, but seem to have no easy way of getting rid of either? Doesn't come pre-loaded with fairly standard apps like Facebook/Messenger, Twitter, Netflix, VUDU, or Firefox. They're easy enough to find in the Google Play Store. Installing them, however, was a chore and nearly bricked the tablet. Especially Facebook. I couldn't get through a simple Facebook install without Google Play and the "Processing System" choking and freezing up. The tablet, or at least the front end UI kept rebooting (several minutes of black screen and/or "Acer" logo whilst nothing happened). Eventually I got far enough to uninstall everything, and reinstall things one at a time. Everything else reinstalled fine, but the Facebook install still hung the Google Play Store (I eventually closed the Store app and just let the install run in the background). Eventually it finally installed, and I rebooted the tablet afterward, and things seem slightly better now. I have no idea why it choked on such a simple chore/install. I balk at the idea of inevitable "multiple updates" which already bog down other tablets / phones I own sometimes. As another user has noted, I too am finding that the tablet has 1 GB (reported as 0.93 GB) of RAM, and pretty much "out of the box" the tablet reports that the average RAM usage is already at 85-88%, most of that amount simply taken up by the Android OS, Google Play Services, Android system, System UI, etc. (~700 MB), leaving not a ton of room for other stuff to run. This may or may not be the source of the lagginess during installs, etc.? I haven't used any resource heavy apps like VUDU / NetFlix yet. the one racing game I played seemed to render and play well enough. so, maybe things will be okay when simply regularly using apps (while not 'installing' things)? Time will tell... The tablet itself seems reasonably well constructed. It has a plastic housing that seems relatively sturdy. I haven't tried actively bending it or dropping it to test durability, of course. the back has a minor texture to it, but doesn't seem "non-slip" like my Shield K1's slightly rubberized back. It has a fairly well-sized 10" diagonal screen. The display resolution seems slightly less than on my Shield K1. It also doesn't have an HDMI out port, so doesn't seem made for streaming video to TV. Brightness seems fine viewed straight-on. Viewed from an angle (left, right, top, bottom) it's a bit dim. So, maybe not the absolute best for off-angle viewing. Not terrible, not 'great.' The speakers seem plenty loud in a quiet place. Haven't tried it in noisy locations like restaurants, etc. yet. Assume it will be fine. Not really an audiophile, so can't comment on the "DTS-HD" speakers. I'm pretty forgiving as long as the speakers work and are audible. The cameras are pretty typical camera phone / tablet phone quality. They look okay on the screen when viewing the full image. But, some fine detail is lost when zooming in. Slightly better than my camera phone, I think. Which isn't saying much since my LG Sunset's camera puts out pretty muddy watercolor-esque garbage. This seems at least a slight step up. Could make out a little detail on zooming in, granted I took a picture from only a foot or so away. YYMV on longer shots. It seems to have a habit of going to sleep quickly (possibly a battery-saving feature) and with screen locking enabled, tends to go directly to "locked" with no ability to "save" the wakeful state by quickly hitting the power button during a brief "grace period" or by tapping the screen a few times? Not too difficult to wake back up, just wish there was a short grace period to "keep alive" before locking. It's nice that it's got a bit more internal storage (32GB) that some other recent models still stuck with 16GB or 8GB. Anymore, the Android OS and pre-loaded apps take up so much room there tends to not be much left for downloading new apps, snapping pics, etc. without it filling up. It's also nice that it supports Micro-SDXC expansion cards (I picked up a dirt-cheap 128GB PNY Micro-SDXC card, which it recognized and allowed me to format right off the bat). Hopefully, between the extra internal memory and the additional SDXC card it won't "run out" any time soon. Given that it comes pre-loaded with Android 6, it can also hybridize the internal and expansion memory (using both for storage of apps, pictures, etc.), so, hopefully that'll reduce the old manual app-shifting from internal to external memory. So far, battery life has been okay. I charged it for a few hours before turning it on. It reported that it had about an 8-hour battery life remaining (wasn't using much to drain it, and it likes frequently going to sleep, probably to conserve power). I don't know what battery life will be like if/when trying to game, or stream video. I suspect it will be considerably lower for those more intensive purposes. Probably just a couple hours? Overall, the jury is still out on this thing. I haven't used it long enough to know whether the lagginess is inherent and will continue to be a problem or whether it was simply a transitory glitch due to a corrupted install download. I suspect it's an inherent lagginess due to insufficient RAM, most of which is eaten up by the Android OS and other 'system / UI' apps. I want to like it, but am currently a bit skittish of it due to the issues encountered in the first day of use (the UI shouldn't be laggy/crashy straight out of the box). I worry the problems are endemic and not just a one-time glitch. Maybe they'll get fixed via over-the-air updates someday? Maybe not... But for those out-of-the-box problems, I'd perhaps give it 3.5-4 stars as a decent not-too-expensive entry level to mid-range tablet with a decent feature set. Initial setup was a breeze, but trying to make it functional (installing FB) turned into a nightmare. I almost didn't stick with it long enough to uninstall/reinstall apps, as it nearly froze every time it rebooted and I almost couldn't get to the point where I was *able* to troubleshoot with an uninstall/reinstall. good thing I'm a techie and *extremely patient.* Were I the average user, I'd have probably taken it back, frustrated, and seen if some other unit met my needs. At present, on a pass/fail grading system, due to the lagginess and facebook app install freezing/crashing, I'd tend to give it a 'fail.' Maybe it was just a one-time glitch that'll iron itself out now that it's been uninstalled and reinstalled. But, maybe it wasn't / won't. I'll have to play with it a bit more. As to whether I'd recommend it to a friend? At present, no. But I'm pretty picky with my tech recommendations to friends & family, and tend to look for "best of breed" solutions that are a good balance of features, performance and price. Sometimes it's worth investing a few more $$ to make sure something actually works as intended and has all the features / performance one needs.

Bought this as a gift and the person that uses it only does basic things. Youtube, internet navigation and pictures. Does well with that. Sluggish with multi-tasking and kind of slow. But for a basic tablet, does the job.

This tablet is good for the $ - it is not the fastest tablet but it is what it is..it is certainly good for checking emails, surfing the web, running store aps. Good for me - not a gamer so I get the use I expect from it at a great price!!

The Acer - Iconia One 10 tablet is a great size. Easy to hold, light weight but solid. It’s fast for it’s processor (1.3Gb), but I was somewhat disappointed in it’s performance after using it for any duration. It get’s slow at switching applications, sometimes to the point of frustration. (“Is this thing hung?”) Sadly, the best solution is to reboot, which takes a rather long time. On the plus side, the screen is sharp. The interface is straightforward and easy to learn and use. The speakers are good, but not great. It charges quickly and the battery duration is also good. It’s got a bright screen for daytime use, but I was disappointed that it’s dimmest setting is still too bright for bedtime use. Also, it has no night setting for limiting the blue wavelengths shown to disrupt sleep. Overall, this is a satisfactory tablet considering its low price point.

I wanted a big screen tablet to watch my shows and Netflix. It works great! The only drawback is that it's heavy if you want to hold it. Luckily, this tablet came with a stand which makes it so convenient to watch my shows handsfree.

If you're strapped for cash, the Acer Iconia One 10 is one of the most affordable 10-inch tablets to get, however if you want a good tablet, you'll need to spend more. Most of the apps are really good. the screen is clear and the camera is awesome.

This Acer tab is great. Runs smooth and has lots of internal memory. Movies look and sound great on it. Games run with no lag. Great alternative for less money than Samsung or Apple tabs. Get this one, you won't be disappointed.

This Acer tablet replaces a Samsung that was three years old. The Acer can basically do anything the more expensive Samsung Note could do, and has much more memory. Would definitely recommend it as an inexpensive Wi-Fi only tablet.

This tablet travels with me and has been used for directions. I also watch movies on it. Checking E-Mail is easy and reading it is good do to the brightness of its display. I play games and this tablet is quick. I also use it to check Yahoo news. My grand kids love to play games when they are here.

This particular Acer iconia tablet would benefit much, much more. With more Ram and a more sufficient Core processor. Apps I downloaded only needed1Gig of Ram, but these particular apps could be installed, but could not and would not play.

Cheaper than an IPAD, but very similar features. Excellent alternative, especially for the price. Can't beat the quality of this tablet for under $150. The sound is awesome as well; everything can be heard crisp and clear.

The acer tablet works good, it takes me a little to get used to it, but I'm not that great when it comes to computers. The one problem I keep running into is that it turns off when I'm in the middle of doing something and then it takes a while to get back to where I was.
