A better tablet than you think...

    Posted .

First, I have to qualify this review by saying that I'm a Mac guy. I bought this tablet as an entry level reader/browser for my GF. Did a LOT of research on the different brands and devices and settled on the Iconia Tab A500 largely due to price and Acer has a pretty good rep. with me. It feels solid and not too heavy. Button and port layout is good, nothing seems to get in the way. The display is bright and vivid. Performance and switching between apps is crisp and snappy. I had a hard time finding anything really wrong with this device and I actually am thinking about getting one for myself in a couple of months. My only complaint is that the WiFi range MAY be an issue. The signal strength icon reports less than full strength even next to my router. But, disconnection or speed problems have not occurred so maybe its just an inaccurate representation of sig. strength. All in all, a great unit and I'm very happy with my choice. As a side note, this tablet gets really bad reviews at most of the big tech magazine sites but they just generally say that "its nothing new". Not sure what that means. If you want a big screen tablet that performs well and has more options than units that are $100 more then this is the one you want.

    Most Amazing Tablet ever!!

    Posted .

First off, let me start off by saying this tablet is the absolute best thing you can purchase if your in the market. I stood in line like an idiot to get the Ipad 2 thinking its going to be everything the Ipad 1 wasnt. Nothing changed. Its a bit zippier and more crisp, lighter, thinner. Thats it. Why would i change and spend money for that, who knows! The software was the same and still had glitches and worst camera ever! Regardless, returned it for this thing! This thing is lightning fast, connects to wifi WAY better than competition (IPAD), the screen is amazing, the quality is amazing, the battery life is amazing. The worst I've even heard about this is the weight and thickness. Well of course its going to weigh more the back is metal and not cheap plastic, adding thickness and weight. Added features putting it way over competition. Full usb, mini usb, hdmi. No other tablet has those features and price. Asus tried but makes you buy a $150 addition to get it. The only complaint, and I mean the ONLY complaint is the charger. It has the smallest cord I've ever seen. really Acer, you couldnt add a few extra pennies to make the cord a few feet longer!! Besides that, you really cant get better. I know like 15 people at the university I attend that put there Ipad garbage on CL and Ebay to sell for this thing! and there making money on the deal!! AMAZING!!!!!!!!!! Go buy one!

    Awesome Value

    Posted .

The Acer Iconia I purchased is GREAT. I spent 8 months wondering if I should get an iPad or if it would just be a waste of money since they come out with something new every few months. Just when I thought I was ready here comes Motorola, Acer, Samsung, Blackberry and a few more. I am a Droid user but have a MacBook as well. I chose the Acer because it has a EASY interface and works well with lots of Apps like the Nook, Docs to Go.... The MAIN REASON I bought the Acer is it has a USB port and HDMI out and for the price that is amazing. The Samsung and iPad (not to mention a couple of others) need adaptors to get these functions and then you can only use one at a time. Not that you would need them to but just in case. There all great, but for the price if you don't need 3G the ACER Iconia is an Awesome Value. Don't forget that future stuff or whatever its called where you can secure your trade-in value later, it might be worth it because things will change. Hope this helps, they were very nice and got me the 2 basic access (shield and case) and then the hardware protection because lets face it, we might drop it since this is most portable.

Bought after returning defective Asus Transformer

    Posted .

I originally had an Asus EEE Transformer but after only having it for one day, the touchscreen stopped working. I was tempted to return it and get another one but after doing more research I found that there were a lot of people complaining about defects. I returned it and bought the Iconia instead. Comparisons: 1- The biggest pro is that I've had it for 2 days and it already has lasted longer than the Transformer. 2- Only $50 more than Asus but gives you a sturdier built machine that WORKS. The cons are: 1- The Iconia has a flap that covers the SD card slot which looks really fragile and would be a serious problem if it breaks off. 2 - The brushed metal finish of the Iconia is not as nice as the finish of the Transformer 3 - IPS screen on the Transformer is better. 4- $50 more It's too bad about Asus, I would have really recommended their product but failed hardware from this many customers is a HUGE problem. I find that if you buy the Iconia first, you won't be missing out on anything as it's a solid product and it definitely gets my recommendation.

    A great, sturdy tablet

    Posted .

I have been using my Acer Iconia tablet for a couple of months now and have been extremely happy with this device. Because of it capabilities with Flash and various connector ports this has replaced my iPad as my tablet of choice. The full-size USB connector makes this a versatile device especially when plugging in thumb drives or external drives. This unit is very well built, very easy to use and comfortable to hold. One of my favorite features is to use its micro-HDMI connection straight to the HDMI of my 50" plasma TV for a true "mirroring" experience -- it doesn't get any easier than this. Acer just released the Android OS 3.1 update so be sure to update your unit's software. I highly recommend the Acer Iconia A500 for a cutting-edge, smooth and stable Android experience.

    Awesome!

    Posted .

I love my Acer Iconia A500. I bought it last week after checking out a bunch of tablets at the Best Buy store on 23rd Street in NYC. I was concerned about the unit based on some reviews saying it felt cheaply made and also complaints about the non-USB charger. However, having held the unit and compared it to other units on display at Best Buy I felt the unit was well built and also noticed that all the other Android tablets have non-USB chargers. Some people complained about the length of the AC adapter cord, and while its not "long", it was easily long enough to plug in and place the unit on a table near the outlet to let it charge. I have had no problems connecting to various wifi networks - at my house, at my office and at my friends house. I also have found the battery life to be excellent. I used it a lot this weekend to surf the web, check e-mail, read some magazines and the charge lasted both Saturday and Sunday. Given the price of this unit compared to others and the ability to add storage via an SD card this purchase was a no brainer! I highly recommend this unit.

THE ABSOLUTE BEST TABLET AVAILABLE MAY 1

    Posted .

I will keep it short and sweet, over the last two weeks I bought and returned an IPAD AND IPAD2 for various reasons. I read about this and for the price and with a great return policy figured why not i will give it shot, nothing to lose. I wanted a tablet to play games and surf, etc, so instead of usiing the laptop on the couch or laying down and dealing with the heat that it gives off and something a bit bigger for playing a bunch of the games on my Droid X which was in hand constantly, great phone but here it is. IF U WANT TO BUY A TABLET AND ARE LOOKING FOR SOMETHING TO BLOW U AWAY WITH A PICTURE LIKE I HAVE NEVER SEEN AND SURROUND LIKE EFFECTS WITH CONSOLE LIKE GAMING AND HD YOU TUBE THEN GO TO BEST BUY AND GET ONE NOW BECAUSE ONCE WORD GETS AROUND THEY WILL BE HARD TO FIND. THIS DEVICE COULD SELL FOR 700 EASY. I NOW KNOW WHAT IPAD MEANS , I PAID ALMOST DOUBLE. SERIOUSLY A GRAND SLAM!!!

    Excellent tablet for Android users

    Posted .

The Acer Iconia A500 is a great product. The Tegra 2 processor screams and it comes with everything you need out of the box. I played with the thing for about 6 hours before I even thought about connecting it to my PC. The microSD slot is great for expansion, and it actually works...unlike the Xoom. It comes with HDMI-out as well as a USB host port. I've only plugged a keyboard and a flash drive into it, but the tablet was able to recognize both. USB Mice aren't currently supported. According to Acer's website, that should be addressed in a coming update. The screen is great and provides for a great reading experience even in sunlight. The front and back cameras work well enough for my usage which is light. The one thing that bothers me about this tablet is its lack of Exchange support out of the box. For many people, that won't be a problem but I need it for my corporate email/calendar/contacts integration. Your options here are to either get another email app from the market or to root the device which many aren't willing to do. There are also a limited number of tablet-specific apps on the market, but they are growing constantly and Android does a great job of scaling non-optimized apps. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by this tablet. If you have an Android phone or use many of Google's products, this is well worth the investment.

Great Tablet...even better with recent price drop

    Posted .

I was the early adopter of the Iconia Tab. Bought it the week it was released. For $450 and the features it had over the TF and IP2 I was sold. now having the tab for over 2 months now, I never regretted my purchase. There have been issues along the way, but there are fixes for each. My only gripe is that I did not get it at its new LOWER price. For you power users, there is a lot of DEV available for this tab, and many custom roms and kernals, also ports for TF/galaxy/xoom. There are 2 things that I do NOT like. (1) the weight. Its a BEAST and is heavy. if you are looking for a light tab, its not for you. I do not eread and mostly use it in my ebay case i purchased on my desk. (2) The touch dots. There are dots on the screen that you can see at certain angles and when the tab is off. It doesnt bother me, but just knowing that its there and being able to see it at times can turn others off. Things that I LIKE. (1) Design. Although a little bulky, I was sold on the full size USB, the aluminum backing. (2) Android. Customizable and no Itunes requirement. No unlocked bootloaders, but Iconiaroot, CWM and BB is all you need to get started (3) MicroSD port. no need for a 32gig model, just add a bigger microSD card and boom!!!! a 48gig model...lol The only other tab that I had considered was the TF and the new thrive, but not much dev available yet. I am considering another tab, but may wait for more 7/8" tabs to arrive

Great product with a few missing things!

    Posted .

I love the Acer running the Android 3.01 Honeycomb OS. It runs fast and has a fantastic picture, you can install flash too! The only thing that isn't so great is that NetFlix isn't compatible with this device yet, and the external USB doesn't work yet either. The applications page is finally in alphabetical order! I have a Samsung Fascinate and finding apps is horrible because their is no rhymn or reason. The front screen works the same way it's phone counterparts do but it deems like you can only have 5 screens, good/bad I don't mind that. Make sure you put the protector on right away, I already have a small scratch on the side of the screen and have only had it for about 12 hours! Like I said before HD and great screen but very susceptible to scratches. The picture is by far superior to the IPAD2 as well, I purchased both and the Acer has a much better looking picture. The camera's are also better too. I think the Android should blast apple OS out of the water, personally, with all the widgets and compatibility. But Apple fans will be Apple fans no matter what. It is, however, missing codecs for video files. ie I can't play my divx or other formats (.avi and .mp4). Documents to go, is 15 bucks now?

Great Tablet for a great price

    Posted .

Being an early I pad owner, I wanted to upgrade to an Android tablet. The I pad is a really good tablet, but it has just too many restrictions for me. I did a lot of research and I really like this tablet, it feels solid and runs smoothly. Back camera takes good pics, the front is just OK. I like that it has hdmi out and the USB input. Honeycomb is awesome and so much better than iOS. I love being able to customize my homepage and the widgets...I can view many things without having to go in and out of applications. The browser is great and it runs fast, but when visiting a lot of sites, I was going to their mobile site. I fixed that by going in to debug mode and changed it to desktop and all is good. I'm looking forward to an update and a few bug fixes and hopefully more features will be added. With Android, the sky is the limit.

The best specs available at a great price

    Posted .

With the Tegra and Honeycomb this is a great gaming platform. Acer nailed it. The specs are almost the same as the Motorola Xoom, but seems like the Iconia has a better screen. I like the look of the Acer better too. Metalic finish makes it look nicer. Same CPU and OS as Xoom, but for some reason Acer got everything to work out of the box. External storage (micro SD) and USB host. Pluss 3 free games, Let's Golf, Need for Speed, and Hero of Sparta. Great job! Can't wait until mine arrives. I pre-ordered as soon as it was available.

    Finally!

    Posted .

ASUS is the pad that I went searching for... I found this instead. Wow! I didn't expect this from Acer. Abondon any live wallpaper and your experience will be fluid. I understand why Apple bypassed FLASH. It slows the scrolling smoothness considerably. But that's not the device's fault. Flash, even on a PC is cumbersome. With that said... ...this device is fabulous! Camera, browser, navigation, connectivity are all dead on. Another review noted the appearance of the touch grid... it was not a distraction, for the most part. Sound is loud and clear. I have to turn it down. The unit seems to be receiving updates during use - I noticed subtle changes in the settings during use (good changes) to some system options. Weight: It's amazing what a couple hundred kilograms make. Holding it in portrait mode... you feel it when grasping the device near the bottom. But for prolonged ebook reading, hold it middle-ways and the weight is no longer an issue. Next to the Zoom, it shines in build quality. Without referencing the price difference, Acer is the superior product. I love it.

    Great Tablet!

    Posted .

Purchased this two weeks ago when BB had at 349.99, totally worth it. Great tablet, have had no issues. When I got it updated it to Honeycomb 3.2, took less than 20 mins. Love the microSD, added 16 more GBs, and full USB port, With Docs to Go FullApp have moved docs from flash drive and able to edit on tablet when Im flying. Streams Netflix perfectly, have downloaded DVD movies I own onto microSD card and they play perfectly on this tablet. Some apps not fully made for 3.2 but I'm sure thats coming. IPAD2 not worth it, if you dont care about being with the "in crowd" you should take a look at this tablet. The weight of it makes it feel solid not like its ready to break.

    what a product

    Posted .

First let me say I don't write rewiews, but I had to make an exception here. I have several friends who have Ipads but I refuse to go the Apple route due to cost and restrictiveness. So I have been searching for a good tablet for a while now. This product has it. I have been playing with in constently for 3 days now. My wife ask if I was going to take it into the office and my reply was "Bad Idea, this thing is way to distracting". It's smooth and I have had almost 0 issues getting it setup. My only complaint is Netflix doesn't have streaming yet, but thats their deal, Crackle.com works just fine on this. Overall I would recommend this to a person inwithout hesitation.

Not called acer 500 tablet, but "WOW TABLET!"

    Posted .

I was looking for a decent to great tablet mainly for my business, but also for entertainment while traveling. So far, WOW! I have 3 calendars on my front screen with my agenda right there visible for me, my broswers in a small box to the top left of the first screen where I can go to any of those site without waisting time, I have my alarm right there as well, and my date/weather. To my next-right slide, I have 4 email accounts set up visible right in front of my screen, one for personal, the rest for different business emails. On my left screen of my "main screen" I have all my fun stuff, like my movies, music, pictures, and games accessible and categorized accordingly to how I see fit. Bottom line with what I'm trying to say? "WOW". It's fast, super fast, makes my business life EASY (Compared to an iPad2), and close enough to unlimited possibility of customization. If only I could show you my screenshot!!

    Awesome Tablet

    Posted .

I've had my A500 for about a month now and absolutely love it. Every single person that sees me with it says "oooohhhh...is that an iPad?" I proudly tell them No. I love the functionality of the A500. A lot of "professional" reviews complained about the weight. I don't even notice the weight. It's no big deal. It's sleak, slim, and has unbelievable clarity. Other reviews didn't like the WiFi antenna range, but I've had no problems with that. In fact, I can get further away from my hotspot with the A500 than I can with my iPod Touch. This thing rocks. You can't beat the price vs. the iPad, and it can do everything that toy can do, if not more (i.e. Flash, external storage, etc). If you're on the fence, buy it. It's worth it.

Great tablet for a great price

    Posted .

Pros: Inputs (MicroSD, HDMI, USB) Android OS Ease of Use Price Speed Cons: Very short power cable Weight (just a little heavy) This tablet is a great choice if you are looking for something that has great performance but not a $500 price tag. While this item is extremely easy to root and install custom ROMs, I have not found the need to do so yet. I am very pleased with it stock. Great selection of apps from the android marketplace as well as Amazon App Store. There are two downsides. The power cable used to charge the device is extremely short. It is impractical to use this device while charging because you are stuck being nearly next to the wall outlet. The other downside is the weight. It is a little heavier than other tablets, but it is not unbearable. I primarily use this for business and have been quite pleased. I can edit/save all my Word, Excel, AND PDFs (apps available in market). It is also great for games when I have some free time. Games like 'Plants vs. Zombies' and 'Angry Birds' look fantastic on this tablet. Overall considering the price and specs, this is a great buy. With the Tegra2 dual-core processor and 1gig of memory, this is a great choice for a variety of users. 16gigs of space is quite a lot, especially considering you can add a microSDHC card.

One of the best in the market

    Posted .

I got the taet the same day it was released, i had my doubts about it at first but i ended up loving the device. The tablet is heavy and you dont really feel it, the best about it is that it a lot of ports and ypu can plug whatever you want to it and it will work perfect. Pros. -Expandable memory via sd card -Software has been ipdated already amd it improved alot. better update once you get it -very user friendly -The screen is beautiful -Metal cover. Acer used good material to build this tablet Cons -Not a lot of accessories available - Market still premature, is npt Acer fault bit is improving - Kind of bulky The tablet is very good and it has an excellwnt build quality. I jist got a Samsung Galaxy Tab and I have to say that they are both at the same level and the only difference is the much lover price of the Acer; but I will have to say that the touchwiz skin on the samsung makes it very god to use. Acer scored big with thos product and I think people should start to consider this item as an option. I dont have the tablet anymore, I gave it to my niece so she can use it at school and all she tells me is that she loves her Acer tablet. I got the Samsung now and i got it because i jist wanted to have that expirience of owning a new tablet and not buy the one I already had, dont get me wrong here because I still consider the Acer way better than the samsung and I will test this onw for a couple of weeks due that is my number two tablet but i may go back and change it for the Acer. I strongly recomend this item, it can do anything and is way better than an ipad (I have never own one and i think they are boring due to the apple limitations). I dont have anything against apple, i think all tjeir product are great but i prefer to be able to do whatever i want with my product and not be limited but what they want me to do. There are no bad things to say about the device, jist give it a try and you will lovw it.

    This ones a keeper !

Well I took the leap I got the Acer instead of the Toshiba. I love it ! full size usb and fast as hell. I did have to root and manually install the video studio app ( the one on moto xoom ) but thats not hard at all .... download unlocker... press unlock .... and now I am 100% in control of my tab. the video studio is still light years away from what apple has but I havent ever had an ipad and wont till I can use my external storage. I dont have any issues with wifi and use it with my mac ... the only prob is my mac wont see it when I plug it in ... so I have to tranfer file via the sd or over the network... other than that its good. movies work like a dream and with the dock I can use the little remote that comes with it with no prob. Go to acer.com to get all of the accessories for the tab and your in like flint. I got the dock, extra power adapter, case and the keyboard .... I still am waiting on the keyboard but everything else came in and works great. I would have liked to have the Asus but them not putting a usb on the tab just isnt right. all in all I am 100% happy with the A500
