Defective Open Box won't honor return

I purchased this item Open Box in store - the item was supposedly tested by Geek Squad before it was put on the show floor to be working. The deal was good so I purchased the Open Box Item, took it home, and immediately it would not post. It powers on but does not boot or post into bios. I returned the following day, but the return was flat out denied despite the product being defective. The product itself is not reliable, and Geek squad is also not reliable for not checking that it works.

Solid performer with premium build feel

The two things that impress me most about this laptop are the solid construction feel - no body flex at all, and how well behaved the temps are in tortuous benchmarks like furmark. The chassis lights are gaudy, but can be turned off. A side effect of the premium feel and cooling is that this laptop feels oversized, and the bezels are comically big. As far as “gamer” focused styling goes, I still find it to be among the better ones with the lighting disabled. If you want a sleeker looking laptop that can still 1080p with high settings, look at the MSI stealth thin or razer blade 15. They were my top choices over this but this was on clearance.

Noise is not too loud. Good graphics, ram. It has display port and HDMI...(great if you are into VR AND have a regular monitor). My only concern is seeming bios issues ... Mine will not go to sleep no matter the settings. Very long boot up time and the Tobii eye tracker seems to forget what it is every now and again. It forgot my HDD boot preferences. This processor has no custom overclock options, it seems. I will check my support options on the bios thing and may perform a reset while keeping my goodies. I replaced the HDD with SSD. It would be great if I were not nervous about the BIOS behavior. Nice gamer color schemes if desired...while not looking like a kid's laptop. Good construction.

Major Screen Bleeding and gets very Hot.

Have extreme screen bleeding along multiple edges of the screen and its very distracting in every lighting condition other than bright daylight. Apparently this is a know issue through many generations of this product and the 17' as well. It also gets quite hot during gaming, so i had to spend additional money to pick up a cooling pad. Because of the price i paid for this premium product and the issues I've had over the past few days since buying, i am now suffering from buyers remorse. How can a reputable brand like Alienware have anything less than a solid gaming product. I think i might just exchange this for the MSI that I was looking at as well.

      Hi James,

We appreciate your review and we're sorry to hear about the issues that you've been having. We would like to share a few tips with you that may help with your overheating device concerns: Tips for Proper Usage:

      1. Dell does not recommend placing portable systems directly on your lap. Due to reductions in the thickness of modern portable systems, heat transfer can be an issue.
      2. Using a portable system (Laptop) on a hard, flat, non-cloth surface will increase airflow and reduce heat from underneath and inside the system.
Using the portable system on a blanket, pillow, or other types of cloth will cover up the fan cause the computer to overheat and can cause permanent damage.
      3. It is recommended to use the portable system in a Room temperature of 0°C to 35°C (32°F to 95°F) with a Humidity level no greater than 90%.
      4. Use compressed air to clean the vents on a regular basis.
      5. Using a cooling pad can decrease heat and increase performance.
      6. If you want to know the temperature limitations for your system, go to the Dell Support Website, look up your system model then open the user guide under the manuals link.

You can read the full article here - http://dell.to/2uJ8AdG.

    Motherboard after motherboard.

Beware of the Alienware motherboard. Received the laptop in February as a gift. Worked well for about 8 months. The motherboard failed in the middle of October. 3 phonecalls (bout an hour or so each with Dell, three photos in an email, and going in an endless loop because they won’t just replace it, I have a tech coming to fix. Tech fixes motherboard Nov 5, all is well. Now it’s December and the motherboard has failed again. Currently on hold with Dell, let the endless loop begin again! Stay away from Alienware or buy Best Buy’s protection plan so you DONT have to deal with Dell!

It functions perfectly, gaming is great, and if you need to edit/ create videos this does it well! I also use it for school, but the problem is that it’s heavy. I think I remember somebody mentioning it’s a fingerprint magnet. That hardly describes it lol. It gets so greasy and has fingerprints all over; it’s horrible. If you can see it for the machine it really is, despite the weight/size/fingerprints, it’s a really good computer. If I could do it over again I might consider an msi with similar specs. It’s smaller and weighs less. **if you’re trying to game on the go you better bring your charger!!

Starting off, that this Laptop is insane when it comes to performance. While it lags behind an i7 4790K and a 1070 GTX in a desktop, the difference is about 8-13% of performance. Unit also, ships with a G.Sync monitor, and a Killer network card, however lacks the Double-shot pro feature. (Which is why I knocked off a star). All in all, it's quick, has the performance gamers need in a easily take it with you size and weight. I used to take the Alienware 17 R3 with me everywheres, now its easier and lighter to take this one. Would definitely recommend it to gamers on the go.

It's my first "gaming laptop", but i brought it because I needed a computer to take with me to a class and create presentations away from home. I brought COD WWII fo entertainment and rented a few movies from the Microsoft store App. The only flaw is that it doesn't have a cd/blueray player. This laptop performed awesome and handled anything and everything like a walk in the park w/o overheating or anything. Also the colorful custom accent lights to decorate the laptop to the user's on taste is pretty unique and awesome too. Its an extraordinary laptop that doesnt disappoint and i'm really glad i brought it.

Got this computer in August, 5 months ago. Broke down and they have to replace the motherboard. I’m a college student and need a computer for school and work which all my files are on. Now I have to wait to ship it in and get repaired and have no idea how long that’s going to take. For over $2,000 this shouldn’t happen. At least let me have a temporary computer for the time being as now this is a huge inconvenience to my school work and job.

This is my first alienware computer. I've heard a lot of people say they are overpriced and not worth it. But to me, this computer has been worth it! I did get it at a discount, but Best Buy has them all of the time so you could snag one then as well! Plays games great, the Tobiieye tracking is really cool! It is a big laptop, so it is kind of difficult to fit in a normal backpack. I have been traveling the country with it though, and so it not too much to handle. Using the computer is seamless. I hardly, if ever, have the computer freeze up for a second. It runs so smooth! Love it!

Based on the ton of great reviews here, I must have ended up with a dud. Unlike the store display, the colors are "washed out" looking, even after going through the calibration process. It seems like there is some light bleed. When I placed the order in-store, the sales representative told me this laptop has a 144hz refresh rate, WHICH IT DOES NOT!! It is a 60mhz. Also, for an SSD, the load times should be faster. I have physical drives on other machines that are just as quick. I guess I should have ordered the ASUS GL503VS-DH74 I originally planned on buying. This is definitely getting returned.

Everything about this computer’s performance is terrible - it can’t even run its own solitaire game without extreme lag. I can’t manage to get past the loading screen on Sea of Thieves, and then it requires a manual restart. Oculus gameplay is glitchy and does not render smoothly. On a different laptop with a weaker graphics card, older processor, and RAM - everything looks great and runs smoothly. I don’t understand...was so excited to see what I could do with a more powerful machine, but this freezes when I try to change between the PRELOADED wallpapers.

I bought this laptop to be my first high power/computing device after always buying budget laptops. I have to say, the speed is remarkable. I bought this laptop for two purposes, reliability for the career search after relocating especially since my focus is on seeking a remote position. Otherwise, I also wanted to learn the basics regarding the process of cryptocurrency mining which although is ongoing this has definitely supported that goal. I can't say enough about how pleased I have been with this device. Finally a computer that meets every current expectation.

This is the second dell product I've owned, previously I owned the Dell Inspiron gaming laptop. The Alienware 15r3 has taken the fun of Inspiron gaming to another level. Solid build body, cool alienwareFX, awesome customer support and robust performance. I should've bought this instead the inspiron gaming. I've been getting solid performances with this model (i7-7700HQ, GTX1070) in any games I've played. Watch Dogs, Watch Dogs2, Forza 6. No overheating issues and games is smotth at 60fps in Ultra setting for all those games mentioned earlier.

    Do not buy Open Box

    Posted
    Patrick

I recently purchased an open box of this laptop and found plenty of problems with it. First of all, Windows was not activated at all. Second, the 1TB hard drive was not detecting on this laptop but did on my desktop. Lastly, the Ethernet port and one USB port did not work at all. I give the computer a 1/5. It had beast specs and ran games easily but it was not worth the issues it gave me. Not forgetting to note, the open box was geek squad inspected.

    Blazing fast gaming laptop

This laptop handles every game you throw at it. To my surprise the combination of a ssd and hard drive is blazing fast at boot and the loading time for games on the hard drive are fast. The gtx 1070 delivers about 5% less fps compared to it's desktop counterpart. On FHD that still means a 140 fps on Overwatch. The ips screen that comes with it shows off colors nicely. This laptop is build like a tank and is heavier then a regular 15" laptops. When buying a sleeve take in account that the size of this laptop is bigger than regular 15" laptops.

Nice graphics but lacks cd rom drive and memory card reader for my camera cards. Main reason for purchase was work which requires both of the above and ability to handle lots of applications open at one time. Handles the multiple applications very well. Just requires extra cords and external CD-ROM drive to import data and pictures. Unit is a little heavy for travel. Unit gets rather warm to the lap when ran for lengthy time. Would have preferred option for earlier version of windows. But handles programs and gaming very well.

This laptop has great graphics and a wonderful keyboard. My wife had a huge excel file that pulled down our Macs and the Alienware blew through it. We did have to update the drivers for graphics and wifi. The biggest issue with this laptop is the heat. A wonderful cooling system was put on the back that not only keeps the core temperature lower, but also prevents it from fitting in most 15" laptop bags and adds 2 pounds of weight. The weight, size, and extra drive bays make this an excellent portable desktop.

Thus laptop is replacing a 17 inch laptop. All I can say is this thing is a beast. The time that I'm saving using this for photoshop will pay for itself in a matter of weeks. I was nervous spending the money for it as it is costly, is well worth every penny. The extra bells and whistles (led) are a nice touch and adds to the wow factor. From the games I played so far...awesome response. If you have never checked one of these out for photo editing. I would definitely recommend this.

Wasn't initially going to buy this, but the clerk said "Hey look at these good deals stranga" So, I looked inside his trench coat and he pulled out 10 open box laptops. Among them was this Alienware. Beforehand I wasn't interested in looking at Alienware because I know their price point. Regardless of price, this has been hands-down thee best computer I've ever had. Does everything I want and more! Thanks, Best Buy! Go look at the open box units around you. Mine was practically brand new.
