Mediocre Purchase
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Prefaced by saying I had an ASUS monitor previously and only got this monitor because of higher refresh rate. Out of the box first thing I noticed was the lack of color of the screen. It wasn’t very vibrant and I messed with settings to try to get a color I liked but was unable to. Second demerit was unbelievable coil whine stemming from the top of the monitor. Very high pitched. Definitely could hear it without headphones on and still could hear it with them on. I kept this monitor for a few days then decided it wasn’t worth the money spent. I exchanged this for an ASUS 240hz monitor instead.

Full-featured work-horse of a gaming monitor
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.THE GOOD - 240 Hz refresh rate - FreeSync and G-Sync compatibility - Variable refresh rate compatible with Xbox - Fully adjustable stand - USB 3.0 hub - Standby USB charging - Great color accuracy after calibration - Lighting effects can act as bias backlight - Three customizable hotkeys - Both headphone and line out jacks - Standard C13 power cable / no power brick or adapter THE BAD - Massive footprint - Recessed video inputs are horrible for routing thick cables - G-Sync functionality only on DisplayPort connection - No speakers - Poor out-of-box color accuracy - No gamma or color adjustment settings THE DETAILS The TL/DR here is the AW2521HFL is a great option for a fast refresh gaming monitor. It does almost everything well, doesn't have any glaring problems or dealbreakers, and is priced where you expect a 240 Hz screen to be. Maybe that's not terribly exciting, but it does its job without complaint. Color accuracy is good ( after calibrated, not out of the box ), and Xbox supports the variable refresh rate, so there's not much to complain about. Apart from the obvious 1920x1080 240 Hz specs, Dell packs in their usual features of a fully adjustable stand ( height, swivel, tilt, and rotation ) and an integrated USB 3.0 hub. The USB can be set to remain powered on while the monitor is in standby so you can charge devices, Be aware, the stand is very deep and will take up a lot of space on a desk. The monitor also has an internal power regulator so it uses a standard 3-pin C13 power cable, something I prefer because it means one less power brick around my desk and no need to hunt down proprietary replacements. On the minus side, connecting the video cables can be difficult, depending on your situation. The DisplayPort and two HDMI connections are recessed pretty far into the rear frame. Connecting cables by feel while reaching around from the front is pretty tricky, especially the HDMI 1 input. The input jacks are also very close to a large hook molded into the plastic frame at the bottom. The hook is supposed to keep all the cables bundled together for better cable management ( the monitor comes with a panel you can attach over the back to cover all the cable connections ). However in order to clear the hook, the cables must make a sharp turn right by their connectors. Doing this with thick or stiff cables can be problematic. And as a slight nitpick, the monitor doesn't have built-in speakers. Perhaps not many people care about that, but it can come in handy for some situations. Instead it has two 3.5mm audio out jacks with independent volume controls. The headphones jack volume is controlled in the monitor's on-screen display ( OSD ) and the line-out jack has a static 100% volume. Controls are the now-commonplace 5-way joystick nub and four buttons on the back of the frame ( right side, when facing the monitor ). Three of the buttons can be customized as hotkeys to quickly change between inputs, picture presets, and gaming overlays ( like timers or current refresh rate ). Unfortunately the settings menu doesn't have a gamma or color temperature setting. But even without those, you can get a very good picture on the monitor. As with most "gaming" products these days, the monitor supports lighting effects, but in this case it's actually useful. The LEDs are on the back of the monitor, so you can use them as a bias backlight for the display, helping lower eye-strain when using it in the dark. The OSD has ten different color options, or you can also connect it to AlienFX software on your computer for more control. Somewhat annoyingly, the front power button light stays on when the display is turned off, and it's pretty bright at night. It turns off if you disable the FX lighting, but that means going into the menu every time you turn the monitor on/off ( you can't map a hotkey to toggle the lighting, sadly ). Apart from the 240 Hz, perhaps the biggest feature of the monitor is that it supports both AMD's FreeSync and Nvidia's G-Sync technologies. However this is a "G-Sync Compatible" device, not a regular G-Sync monitor. The difference is that Nvidia has certified the AW2521HFL to work with G-Sync variable refresh rate, but it doesn't have all G-Sync features like variable overdrive or refresh rates down to 1 fps. The AW2521HFL only supports G-Sync over DisplayPort while FreeSync will work over either HDMI or DisplayPort.. If you're planning on using this display with a GeForce powered laptop, the laptop must have a DisplayPort jack ( or USB-C that supports DP ), and the GeForce card must be linked to that output. A lot of laptops now only have an HDMI connection wired to their discrete GPU while the integrated graphics is used for the other video out connections. However, even if you don't have a FreeSync or G-Sync compatible gaming system, the 240 Hz refresh rate alone does a lot to minimize how much you notice screen tearing. Overall, it's a solid monitor. My biggest complaints are the cable routing and that I can't set a hotkey for the lighting effects, and those are pretty minor. Obviously it's expensive, but all 240 HZ monitors are. The black levels and contrast ratio could be a little better, but for the most part aren't an issue when gaming. The color accuracy is good after calibration, not professional graphics good, but the monitor isn't claiming to be a business monitor. It's a good work horse that will serve well, even if it doesn't wow you.
