Hi CENTERchannel,
Thank you very much for your valued feedback. We apologize for the issues you have come across with your original and replacement Alienware x15 gaming laptop because it is crashing.
For the issues with crashing, I have provided a link below to help troubleshoot and resolve this issue.
Resolutions 1. Run a Computer Diagnostic. To determine if your computer is experiencing a hardware problem, run the Dell Preboot System Assessment (PSA) Diagnostics. For information on how to run Diagnostics, and to determine the issue, refer to Dell Knowledge Base Article: http://dell.to/2iaiujA 2. Check Safe Mode for Symptoms. To boot into safe mode, please follow the instructions below: a) Start the computer. b) Tap 'F8' on the keyboard immediately and every one second until the Dell logo screen disappears. From there you will see the Windows Advanced Options Menu on the screen. (If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, restart the system and try again.) c) Select Safe mode with Networking and press Enter. d) Log on as the administrator or as a user with administrative access. e) Open applications and test the computer in safe mode. If the symptoms exist in safe mode, please continue the troubleshooting steps in this article. If the symptoms do not exist in safe mode, the issue is likely related to a driver or software and you may wish to complete step 3 to see if you are able to resolve the lockups or freezing. 3. Check for Malware. Malware (Virus, Spyware, etc.) can definitely cause a Windows system to lock up or appear to hang. This laptop totally exceeded my expectations. With the rtx 3070 and i7 processor you can pretty much run any game no problem.
I tried games like Apex Legends, Destiny 2, and Rainbow 6 Siege with no trouble at all. I ran the games with low to medium graphics settings so I can maximize frame rate and the games looked beautiful. I did also try these games with high graphics settings just to see if frames would drop substantially but there was no problem there.
The 360 hertz screen is amazing. It creates a sharp image with very clear colors. The problems I have had with laptops in the past is poor ventilation, cooling and noticeable fan noises. This laptop does a good job and keeping the cpu cool while gaming, but you do notice a little fan noise.
I plugged in my own mouse but I did use the laptop keyboard to test it out and it’s pretty average. They keys are smooth and quiet. Portability is very important to me because I’m always on the go with work and with a laptop with this kind of power, it was a must have.

I have longed for an Alienware product for several years, decades in fact, after beginning playing various games such as Rainbow 6, Railroad Tycoon, and other genres in college. The resolution, game speed, and other features were second to none. Now that I have one, I have mixed feelings about it.
Don’t get me wrong, the graphics are incredible. It’s everything that Alienware is hyped to be. After spending several hours in different games, websites, and other media, I’m very impressed. I ran it through its paces in different games, such as Minecraft, Fortnite, and Medal of Honor, to see how it handled FPS-styled programs, and it barely blinked. I then switched to media, streaming from YouTube for example, or going through photos I downloaded from my phone. Again, other than my poor photography, the resolution is crisp, colors are bright, and the replay of music videos, presentations, and other forms of streaming media didn’t lag, buffer, pixelate, or have any other form of degradation. Keep in mind, this is for the video portion only. When it came to audio portion, playback sucked. Using a set of Bang & Olufsen audiophile-grade headphones, I could barely hear playback, and what I could hear was heavily interrupted by static and other interference. Unplugging the headphones and reinstalling them cured the situation…until the next audio track started, then the problem started all over again. Switching to a set of Sennheiser ‘phones didn’t make a difference. Finally, I used some of my software that was more for business, like CAD programming, rather than entertainment. While the colors aren’t as prevalent in these types of software as they are in games or media, the ability to rotate a complex part in 3 dimensions without having to wait on render speed was impressive. So far, this device is living up to the anticipation for graphics, but it’s heavily disappointing on everything else.
However, there are several quirks that I’m not fond of at all. The first is battery life. Even while in sleep mode, with the lid closed, it goes through the battery like nothing else. I can get several weeks’ worth of work out of my non-Alien Dell, but after a week of non-use, I opened this one up to find it already needed a charge. Using the computer speeds batter use even further. I’ll get a few hours of use out of it before I need to plug it in. Secondly, the rainbow of lights on the keyboard at startup is a nice gimmick, but it’s very distracting. The cool cerulean backlight that it finally settles down to is more my speed. I will say, the glowing alien logo on the lid, and the lit trim is a nice touch. The weird green alien power button is very incongruous. Finally, and this is a big one, the keyboard layout and operation is not friendly at all. I’m constantly finding myself typing gibberish because my fingers don’t fall naturally on the layout. When I do get everything lined up, quite often the key response is measurably delayed, if it works at all. I quite often have to quickly recover from the errors this causes, both in games, and in business work. The keyboard mishaps are almost enough to take away any of the positives of the display and replay capabilities, it’s that annoying.
Beyond the graphics capabilities, and the quirks already discussed, it’s a nice unit. Setup was very easy with the system automatically importing all my programs from my old device. I still had to go through and set up everything to how I prefer, but not having to load anything from scratch saved lots of time. I’m also digging the face recognition for log-in. I’m not a fan *at all* of having a webcam that’s not blocked off, but just opening the lid and having it on the desktop before I can even sit down is a cool party trick.
In the end, if you’re using this device as a computer, the keyboard foibles are a deal breaker in my opinion. It takes too much time to recognize a mistake has been made, and correct it, to make it worth your while. If you’re using this as a gaming platform much of the time, the graphics edge out the hiccups that the keyboard causes, but you can’t even trust that audio will work correctly. Because Alienware offers a ton of accessories that match this device, it may be worth bypassing the keyboard altogether with a custom one, and only using this for processing and display, as well as picking up a headset; who knows, matching brands might be by design. Finally, if you have a good mix of games, media, and business use, I think the keyboard would be a dealbreaker here as well. Using an external mouse may solve some of the issues, but overall, I’ve found it hard to not have to use the keyboard to any extent, and every single time I’ve had issues with key placement and operation.

Solid Gaming Laptop

The Alienware X15 is a good looking solid gaming laptop. Even though it’s bigger than a typical laptop it is still remarkably thin. In terms of games I was able to run pretty much everything I threw at it typically at medium or high settings. I was able to run control pretty well with ray tracing on and not have too many issues, and while you can play with it unplugged off the battery I recommend if you are playing games to have the laptop plugged in as the battery does not last very long. Depending on the game it can get pretty loud but for most part the fan level is not too terrible.
Overall I am very happy with it because I can use it for watching movies and typical work. In those parts the laptop shines battery life is great if your watching videos or just using it for work. The screen looks great and competes really well with my wife’s OLED screen laptop.
Overall if you need something for work and do not have anything else to game on then this is good option. If you already have something else to play games on this might no be the best value.

Hello Luke,
We appreciate you taking the time to leave us your review. We are sorry to hear about the troubles you have come across with your Alienware x15 R1 gaming laptop because it was overheating and now it is not booting up. This is certainly not the experience that we like to hear from our customers. We appreciate your feedback and will use it to help improve our current and future products.
To help with overheating issue, we would recommend making sure the BIOS is up to date on your PC. I have provided a link to the Drivers and Downloads page so you can check for and do any applicable updates. Dell has also released an Intel Power Management Utility to help with the overheating that you may be experiencing on your computer. For this package to take effect, the system power plan must be set to Balanced under the Additional Power Settings. Also, the Power Mode option that is displayed when you click the battery icon, should be set to Better Performance. This package only takes effect on AC power and not on battery power. The Intel Power Management Utility can be found here - http://dell.to/3tStRgX.
Below I have provided troubleshooting tips with the full article that can help with the overheating issue:
1. Make sure the system is in a well-ventilated area. 2. Use laptops on flat surfaces to improve airflow. Hard table tops are recommended and avoid using any type of cloth or any other soft material under the laptop. 3. For desktop systems make sure there is enough clearance around the system to allow the air to flow. If the system is in an enclosure try to move it to a more ventilated area for testing. 4. Check that the air vents are clean and that there is nothing obstructing them. 5. Update your system BIOS to the latest available on Dell Support Site. 6. You can reset your BIOS settings to undo any changes that could be causing the system to overheat. 7. Disable NVIDIA G SYNC and run a stress test using SupportAssist. 8. Navigate to the Thermal Controls in the Alienware Command Center, which is found under the Fusion tab. There you can adjust the thermal control of system fans and change the status of active venting. This link is for the Alienware Command Center Quick Guide, where you can find a video to explain how to use the Manual Mode for the Thermal Controls: https://dell.to/3nZtYDm.
I have also provided a link to help resolve the booting issue. On that page, you can choose between, no power, no post, no boot, or no video. Once you choose you can find the options to help troubleshoot and resolve that issue.
If the issue with your gaming laptop is still not resolved after utilizing the troubleshooting options above, please contact the Dell Support Team at 1-800-624-9896 for further guidance.

High-end, premium gaming laptop

The Alienware x15 R1 15.6" 360Hz FHD Gaming Laptop with Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB Memory, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 GPU, and 512GB SSD is a remarkable gaming laptop which sets a standard for what a premium high-end gaming laptop should be which I doubt can be matched. From the futuristic, thin design to its performance, it is hard to envision anything else even coming close.
To start, I am not normally one to care about packaging but the packaging of this laptop actually managed to catch my eye. It is difficult to put into words how cool it is so I’ll just leave it at this and encourage you to find out for yourself. As for the laptop’s design, I was pleasantly surprised by how thin it is. One of the main reasons for this is the fact that it does not have a built-in ethernet port for wired internet connections. Instead, Alienware has included an ethernet adapter which can be connected to one of the two available USB-C Thunderbolt ports. This is an amazing and thoughtful addition which truly exemplifies the quality and consideration Alienware has put into this laptop.
Speaking of ports, I really like how the majority of the ports are located on the back rather than the sides. Nothing is more annoying than having to plug in a wired mouse on the side where it is constantly in the way. Once again, another thoughtful design aspect that really helps this laptop stand above the rest.
As for performance, the Alienware x15 is an absolute beast. I used this laptop to replace another gaming laptop that was a couple of years old and the difference between the two is so vast that I can’t even really put it into words. The x15 is blazingly fast and easily handles everything I’ve thrown at it. In my experience, such high-end performance is typically accompanied by cooling concerns but even the cooling system for this laptop is top-notch and has eased my concerns.
With this in mind and when considering how everything about this laptop seems to be of the highest possible quality, I have little doubt that the Alienware x15 gaming laptop will last a very long time and I highly recommend it!

Beast of a Gaming Laptop

The Alienware X15 is one of the newest flagship gaming laptop Alienware has to offer and it does not disappoint.
First of lets start with build quality. Build quality is top tier with this model. It comes with a nice lunar white finish on the outside which is matte and does not leave fingerprints and on the inside is a black darkside of the moon finish, the contrasts looks stunning. Most gaming laptops are typically plastic in feel and build not this one. It is also light and thin. I love that aside from the power plug and headphone jack all of the I/O ports are directly in the back of the laptop. RGB lights surround the back lid and around the I/O ports as well as the keyboard. No flex at all when opening/closing the lid.
Spec wise the Alienware X15 comes with an 11 gen Intel Core I7 processor, 16GB or ram, 512gb SSD and Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 with a 15.6" 360Hz FHD panel. Pretty stacked spec wise. If I had one complaint it would be that the Ram is not upgradeable, Ram is soldered on other than that you can add an additional M.2 NVE SSD which I have done to increase my storage for games. In addition Alienware has a new quad fan design in the laptop allowing for better cooling performance.
This laptop boots up in no time and also has Windows hello with face recognition. Make sure you update everything during set up along with Alienware/GeForce/Windows drivers to make sure you are up to date. I am averaging high FPS on all my games while staying relevantly cool with thermals. When the fans kick in they are not noticeably loud as other gaming laptops I own.
As far as gaming goes I typically play Apex and Warzone in which I am getting high FPS during play and the buttery smooth 360Hz panel is a dream; very smooth. I have yet to try other games but I am pretty confident I will get the same performance with other tittles.
I will also being using this laptop as my daily driver as it is powerful enough to handle multitasking what I need it to.

This is a superb machine. Sleek build, quick responsive hardware, intuitive port placement and amazing features.
Right out of the box, the first noticeable feature was the thin profile. By far the thinnest “gaming” laptop I can recall in my recent memory. Once powered up, the matching internal/external lights warrant a nod for grabbing my attention. Very slick.
The 360hz screen just floats through videos and applications. It’s vibrant and sharp adding clarity to the smooth frame rate. And although getting to such high rates can be negligible to the naked eye, it shows on certain genres…
The port placements are on the rear of the unit, where it makes perfect sense. All connected cords will not hinder gameplay as they are running behind the play area, not sharing the space. Included are two USB-C ports with one doubling as a GPU connected Display Port. You also have a micro sd card slot, HDMI and a SS USB port. I would have preferred at least a second SS USB port, but going thin is bound to garner sacrifice. Understandable.
The big question is playability and handling loads. My gamer before this was an RTX 2080, so the 3070 is a major upswing in terms of framerate and overall playability. Combine that with the Geforce Experience settings, and I’m running several games on max settings with more than adequate performance. The laptop itself does get warm, but surprisingly, still cool enough to touch. I tried a few long sessions and had no worries about heat dissipation.
Battery is what you’d expect, even with battery boost on, somewhere between 2-4 hours depending on your settings.
This is a fantastic system, complete with any and all bells and whistles necessary to make the most of any gaming/streaming experience. And being that it’s thin, it’s actually a monster gamer that you can tote around quite easily. Tailored for excellence.

Alienware x15 R1 15.6" 360Hz FHD Gaming Laptop - Intel Core i7 - 16GB Memory - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 - 512GB SSD
Dell Alienware is a name that is easily identified by almost all computer enthusiasts. Who hasn’t seen a Dell advertisement that showcased the latest computer technology and not wanted one for themselves. But with legendary status comes great responsibility. The x15 R1 is a very nice gaming laptop but it seems to suffer a critical problem that Dells claims to have made major improvements to and that's its CPU cooling. Dell touts its ALIENWARE CRYO-TECH™ TECHNOLOGY. This is their latest cooling technology which is a combination of its Element 31 silicone thermal interface material, quad fan technology, quad airflow and options for managing five unique power states. With the time I have had testing the X15 R1 it comes short of doing a good job cooling the CPU under game loads. I am consistently seeing CPU temperatures of 100°C. This temperature is within the Intel specifications for it’s i7-11800H CPU of, (TJUNCTION 100°C). Junction Temperature is the maximum temperature allowed at the processor die. This is the CPUs highest temperature before it will throttle down. Or simply it will slow itself down to protect itself. It would have been nice to see it running below this threshold. The RTX3070 actually ran very cool for a laptop with observed temperatures in the high 70s°C. Any temperature you might experience could be different then what I was seeing. The fans do a good job getting the heat out and even at full speed the fans noise is tolerable compared to other gaming laptops I have tested. You would never play on this laptop on your lap without having something under it.
I do like the feature set here with one major exception which is the omission of a DisplayPort graphic port. There are not a lot of ports but the ports here have enough overall flexibility there really is nothing you can’t connect to. The RTX30 series chip supports HDMI 1.2 which allows for a very good feature set including support for 4k at 120 hertz. But most desktop monitors do not have this newer HDMI connection. Most monitors do have DisplayPorts so not including one here is a bit of a letdown. You can do DisplayPort on the Thunderbolt 4 port but it would have been nice to have a dedicated port. I am also not a big fan of the AC adapter location. It is on the left side which is better then having it on the right but it sticks straight out. A power adapter with a 90 degree bend would have helped here. You can add another M.2 SSD but not more ram. I looked into how difficult it is to add a second SSD and it's doable but do be careful. You can download the service manual right from Dell so you might want to look at it before doing it yourself.
I did some benchmarking because when you look at this Intel i7 and RT3070 it's easy for some to get confused. Notebooks with mobile CPUs and GPUs do not perform at the level of desktop parts. This CPU running the common Time Spy benchmark is 69.7% slower then my Intel CPU i7-11700F system. And although it is not really a fair fight, it's 57.3% slower than my RTX3080. About the speed of an RTX2080. Performance is always relative and in the actual world this laptop rocks in gaming. Its 1920x1080 360Hz screen is fast, bright and clear. This is the best gaming resolution for this GPU. The keyboard has nice RGB lighting with good key travel and feel, the mouse trackpad is responsive and accurate and I do think the Alienware power button looks really good. All of the RGB is done well and the back chassis lighting might just be enough for a whole room. At first I had mixed feelings about the feel of the chassis material but now that I have had more time I find the feel is just fine and doesn't become a fingerprint magnet. Dell says this is the slimmest Alienware laptop they have ever made. Battery life is about what you expect from a gaming laptop. Writing this review and watching a few videos will put me at 20% in just 3 hours. I tend to run my displays bright and you do have many options for power management so that can probably be improved. I test at factory defaults.
The gaming laptops available today are miles better than ever. This is mostly because of the performance of these new mobile GPUs. They really do make mobile gaming on AAA titles possible. Yes they still get hot and have to be plugged in and maybe still will for a long time yet. But for anyone wanting to experience taking their gaming on the road or a workstation that doesn’t take up a whole desk this will do. The Dell Alienware R1 is a very nice gaming laptop. Heat is a problem for all of the new CPUs. They can run hot and if Dell can’t tame them who can. With great products comes great heat.

Everything you would expect from Alienware!

Having tried gaming laptops in the past and not being overly impressed with their ability to handle the latest games, I wasn't sure this one would be much different. It has great specs but there always seems to be something missing between a laptop and PC gaming rig.
This machine is phenomenal!
First the build. While it looks classy and the lighted alien head on the cover is nice, it is plastic. My guess is if they used a more substantial material for the case, it would significantly add to the weight of the unit which comes in at around 5 lbs already. The keyboard is responsive and nice.
The screen is excellent and the quality shows.
As far as upgrades, you can add another NvME drive but I don't believe you can add RAM to this unit. I am a bit confused but it appears there are multiple iterations of this unit. This is the R1 unit (it appears they go up to R6). It appears that some versions can be upgraded with more RAM but this one does not appear it can. The 16GB that is on the machine is plenty snappy.
Finally the games. I didnt mess around with many games but instead went to the recent grandaddy of power - Flight Simulator 2020. I loaded the game with the most recent patches (a recent update rewrote much of the game and greatly increased performance).
I set the base graphic setting to "Ultra" and 1080p. I then went for a flight over downtown New York City. It was amazing! Very little stutter and everything was very responsive. I have played FS2020 on a powerful desktop and while this lacked some detail I was very impressed with the overall look on a laptop. Keep in mind that there are many ways to tweak the graphics on FS2020 and I just did the default so it could only get better.
Overall this is an excellent gaming rig. If it can handle FS2020, there should not be many games that would challenge it too much. This is highly recommended!

This has GSync and GSync is brilliant.

Display:
This has GSync, which is omitted on the BestBuy product page (at the time of writing) for some strange reason. GSync is such a big feature so I thought to mention it upfront. Please note you will not see it in the Nvidia control panel if Intel integrated GPU is active. You can select Nvidia GPU explicitly and after that, it shows GSync option.
Ghosting: Without GSync on for windowed mode, I could see ghosting in the UFO test but nothing once GSync was enabled. It works well in games and I tried from Half-Life to Witcher 3. Witcher 3 looked absolutely gorgeous. It is a 1080p screen but on a 15" screen the PPI is 141 and it looks very crisp. It can go up to 360 but I doubt on new games the GPU can hit that much which is where GSync makes perfect sense.
Dell calls it a WVA panel which means wide viewing angle. It is for sure not a VA panel as colors are different. It is either IPS or TN and I am guessing IPS because viewing angles are very good, colors pop (to be fair, current TN panels are very good too), and it does have the infamous IPS glow. The "IPS glow" in the dark scene is visible and to some extent distracting it does not affect my gaming though but I was not expecting that in this price range.
Keyboard: Decent, gets hot when a game is running, though WASD remains touchable. Typing feels comfortable but there is no separate num lock which I really liked in my current laptop. I know this is an Alienware and is meant for gaming but 15" is a lot of area to fit it.
Backlight: The keyboard has RGB, which looks nice except it does not illuminate the shift characters or the fn characters. So in the night, you will be squinting trying to find a $ key or a (). This totally messes up the user experience and why they did it is beyond me. Arrow key placement could have been better but if this is your only laptop you will get used to it.
Software-wise, I could see that I can choose a profile for gaming key, number row.
Build & Ports: Build quality is excellent, no flex whatsoever. It has only one USB port which I think is one less than what I prefer. It does have two USB C ports which I ended up using with an adapter for my headphone. All the ports are in the back and the HDMI port is 2.1.
The generics: In general use it is snappy, the OS is responsive, fast to boot. Windows Halo is a treat to use. It did crash once in early setup but worked fine after a reboot and have not after that. I did update the drivers right after the initial setup. There seems to be very minimal bloat and you can uninstall most of it.
Gaming performance and thermals: Performance is fantastic for a laptop 3070, in my testing, Witcher 3 on 1080p was giving close to 150+ fps on mostly ultra with hair works. CPU and GPU went 80+ but when I turn the thermals to full it dropped back to the 70s. Please note that there are different 3070 and you will identify them based on the published wattage. In this particular model, it is 90 watts default and 110 maximum. 3070 range is from 80 to 125 and x17 does come up with a 125 watt 3070. So this one is on the lower to medium side of 3070.
I ran 3D Mark Timespy and the score was 9899 (https://www.3dmark.com/3dm/65323000?) with a GPU score of 10053 and CPU Score of 9111.
As per the 3D-mark, the GPU reached 1770 peak clock and avg clock of 1520. The CPU reached 4596. The highest temp reached in CPU test and were 90 & 79 respectively by GPU & CPU. In graphic tests, the highest temp were 77 & 72 respectively. In graphic tests the GPU was at 100% load so the cooling system works well colling the GPU but when CPU is stressed it could not control the temperature that well.
Considering the GPU load was at max 56% in the CPU test, it makes me wonder why the GPU temp becomes so high. This is something to think about if you are into CPU-intensive workloads.
I also ran the user benchmark tool, and you can see the results at https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/45533576 or see attached screenshot.
You might be comparing it with Razer Blade, in the same price range that did not offer GSync and that itself makes this one the right choice and more futureproof as the GPU will eventually struggle when the new games are out and GSync will make sure you still get the good experience.

Powerful Laptop, Unique Design

Very thin 15.6” laptop packing a lot of power in an Alienware design. I’m pleasantly surprised at how well it handles heat for as thin and powerful as it is.
Things I like:
Performance – I was surprised at how powerful this laptop is. Rocking an Intel i7 11800H, coupled with an RTX 3070 GPU, they managed to cram both in a small form factor. Even though it is very thin it still manages to dissipate heat well and without being obnoxious. In Cinebench I was hovering around 13,900’s with a high of 14,005 which I was really impressed with. Got great scores too with 3DMark. Got steady marks at around 10,000 with a high of 10,039. Gaming wasn’t a problem. Hovered around 100 FPS with Destiny 2. GTA V Online did well too with averages around 74 fps. Everything runs butter smooth with 360hz refresh rate coming from the display. You can also use the function button to turn on high performance mode which kicks the fans in at max speed allowing the processor to turbo boost for longer. Temperatures did get up in the 90’s but modern chips can handle the hotter temperatures.
Windows Hello – ‘Nuff said. More laptops should have this as it’s an effortless way to sign in and just requires your gaze.
Design – If you get an Alienware part of the allure is the design. The pale white on the back and the midnight black on the inside creates nice contrast. The base extends out just beyond the hinge which is a little different than most designs giving it a unique look. The screen, which comes in at the aforementioned 360hz, disappears into the black bezels, especially in a darker environment. It wouldn’t be a gaming PC without RGB either. Per key lighting, a ring around the I/O on the back, power button and alien logo on the lid are all individually controllable. They even rethought the power brick by making it smaller and more portable without sacrificing power. Most of the I/O is in the back with the power and headphone jack being on the sides.
I/O – Thunderbolt 4, USB C 3.2 Gen 2, USB A 3.2 Gen 1, HDMI, SD Card Slot. With power delivery, power share, support of 2 4k monitors or 1 8k monitor, you’re left with options.
Heat Management – The fans do a really good job of keeping thermals under control. While running in performance mode through Alienware Command Center (AWCC), the fans will start to ramp up as the system gets hotter. There are 4 fans which move air out of the system. During normal, non-gaming use, you can comfortably browse the internet, watch videos, listen to music and don’t really even notice the fans or heat. It’s only when you’re gaming when the heat and fans become noticeable. I don’t recommend putting the laptop in your lap when gaming as it does get warm. As far as the keyboard goes, you don’t really ever notice the heat. Alienware does a great job of directing temperature away from the keys. They use a thermal compound called Element 31 which I’m assuming is some of the magic behind thermal control.
Middle of the Road:
Going to quickfire off a few things that are just average. Nothing special about the trackpad, keyboard, camera, or speakers. Seems like they’re off the shelf hardware. Keys are a little stiff, but I do like the layout and everything seems easy to use. Sound profiles are adjustable and I found the music setting in AWCC to be the better sounding EQ setting. The “OC” setting in AWCC limits how much you can OC the GPU. This makes sense in a thin gaming laptop but kind of makes me wonder why it’s there in the first place. I would have liked to see just one more USB type A port. The world hasn’t quite moved to purely USB C (although I wish they would) and I found myself wanting one more. I use a USB dongle for my mouse and had to unplug it to use a flash drive.
What to Watch Out For:
512 GB of storage isn’t a lot for a gaming laptop. Although I haven’t filled it up yet, I can see how over time you’ll find yourself wanting more. The RAM is soldered on the motherboard so you’ll want to get what RAM you want from the get go. This is likely done as a space saver. Finally, it’s a tad bit heavy, which some may have a problem with, but considering the 4 internal fans and chunky heat pipes/sinks, it’s a necessary tradeoff for heat management.
Final Thoughts:
Alienware has clearly been pulling out all the stops and making some new ones, to try and get the most performance out of a thin form factor while keeping the Alienware style and finesse. With innovation in thermal performance with their Element 31 thermal compound and 4 fan design, you check all the boxes of power, design, and build quality that gamers look for in a portable gaming machine.
